Smash Bros. Brawl's Wiimote controls

We've known for a while that Super Smash Bros. Brawl will allow players to choose four different control types when the game releases Feb. 10, but the standalone Wiimote control was the only one that really needed explaining. Today Nintendo posted exactly how the Wiimote controls will work. It seems simple enough ... with practice.

Hopefully Nintendo will have all the control possibilities available to test when they show off Brawl at E for All this week. At this point, we're still expecting to rock it old school with a Wavebird Gamecube controller, but we'll have to see how the Wiimote/Nunchuk combo works. The standalone Wiimote control looks awkward, if only because the grab button is in the middle of the controller and activating the shield requires pushing out your index finger. We'll have a much better idea later this week.

I'd have to agree with the Joystiq crew... wavebird or gamepad'll be used on this end too.

Hmm... might not be terrible if you can still use the shield + attack to grab. And if the up to jump isn't too awkward.

Pushing B from that position might be weird too, though. I'll try it though. It'll be nice to just have the controller in hand without having cords hanging off.

And I'm so done with the wave bird. Ugh. That was SO 2003.

Though in further pondering it.. I still think the trump card will be the classic controller with "A" for jump, "B" for attack and "Y" for special attack. "R" for shield and "L" for throwing items. Hopefully you'll be able to use the second stick for smash attacks too. That would be pretty okay.

eh. ill probably try it, but then go back to the gc controller (of which im buying new ones when this comes out).
and a point of mention: i seem to remember hearing somewhere recently that there will be customizable controls anyway, so even this could be made good. unless of course that was just me...

i dont know why i havent thought of that (ive had it since joystiq allowed custom avys). its actually supposed to animate, but i never got around to changing it when it wouldnt. but yea, ill do it.

I may use this style a lot simply because it requires the least amount of extra doodads. No Wavebird dongles, no dangling Wiimote off the end of the Classic Controller, etc.

Also, remember that you can customize the button layout in this game, so I'm thinking of sending the taunt button to the back where I can completely forget about it.

I would change taunt place to grab and viceversa or change Taunt to block then block to grab and grab to taunt.

This is a great idea for a quick co-op with a guest, but I can't imagine anyone owning a Wiimote and not a nunchuck.

This will be the first scheme I try out. :D

Every Wii owner has 1 Wiimote and nunchuk, but the others being sold seperately forces them to work this in, so as not to limit the number of people who can enjoy this game's multiplayer

I myself will alternate between Wiimote-n'-Nunchuk and GC controller, the former for single player (relaxation gaming) and the latter for competitive multiplayer

IGN said they preferred this control scheme, though I don't know how. Personally I am happy to have 4 (!) options for control. I know it will be easier to just hand a wiimote to some newbs and say "1 is attack, 2 is special"

I like this, but I'll set 1 + 2 to be grab and leave the d-pad + 2 as smash. I don't want to have to hit minus to grab.

This is my main beef with the Wii Remote: As a standalone controller, its design is horrible. It's pretty much impossible to comfortably use all of the buttons during game play, no matter how you hold the controller. I wish that it was more condensed.

Remember, it's not always going to be held in any one way. If you compromise for one style, you may screw up another. I don't think there could have been a way to satisfy BOTH styles 100%.

From what I've heard, the Wiimote condom cover actually makes holding the controller NES style extremely comfortable. That's another plus.

Also, I never liked pushing up to jump. I always jumped using the X button. Maybe I'll move the jump button to A and then shield to the up direction. The possibilities....

The problem with A as jump is that you can't move while jumping.

Unless you have two thumbs on your left hand.

I could go OLD skool and assign jump to the 1+2 button combo. That's how you jumped in Double Dragon 2!

I have yet to see a control scheme that I'm not interested in. They all look like they have their pros and cons; I'll def being trying them all out when the game finally ends up in my hands.

Well, everyone has a nunchuck and a remote. it's just that some people have 2 remotes (because you get 1 free with wii play). so you can play 2 player without spending more for the nunchuck or classic cont.

what i'm concerned about is there are 2 ways to pull off a smash attack, direction and 2, that seems standard that allows you to do all of your sideways, down and up smashes, however the 1+2 combo has no direction, so have they added a new stationary smash attack?
