The best thing you'll see today: Portal gun in Half-Life 2
We'll be honest. We've got it bad. Portal, we're addicted to it. What started off as a fling with the perceived one-night floozy of the Orange Box lineup has turned into a serious long-term relationship. We find ourselves going through the other Orange Box offerings – and real life, we'll be honest – thinking, "Gee, I wish I had the Portal gun here."
Thanks to hard work and years of studying (stay in school, kids) the alchemists at Primotech have transformed blood and sweat into an incredible hack that lets you create portals all over the lovely, quasi-European walls of Half-Life 2's City 17. Some notes: you'll obviously need the PC version, you'll need to follow some dozen steps full of words like "hosing," and you'll want to keep a fresh pair of pants nearby. But before you get to all that, peep the video which is safely contained after the break.

i too have fallen under the Portal spell. the whole Orange Box is superb but that little game gave me one of the best experiences gaming i've had in a long time. here's hoping for some DLC levels down the road. !!!!!!
Royale @ Oct 18th 2007 10:31AM
DLC? heh. PC FTW!
Foggy Bottoms @ Oct 18th 2007 12:31PM
360 devs make DLC for their computer versions too...
oblivion being the only example i can think of at the moment :-/
Odoyle @ Oct 18th 2007 9:25AM
God that makes me happy in my pants. Of course I have to see it right when i get to work.
Mike @ Oct 18th 2007 9:30AM
THIS IS INSANE!!!
copa @ Oct 18th 2007 9:47AM
That was delicious. But I was really wanting to see him open a portal on the floor under the Combine.
And if he was really cruel, make the Combine fall 30,000 feet.
FOXHOUND @ Oct 18th 2007 9:30AM
I love PORTAL like a fat kid loves cake... but man, I am *never* going to play that game as tipsy as I was yesterday. I gave such an offering to the porcelain god...
...no wonder they offer cake and not a cold beer at the end. :\ -cue TF2 fail music-
AlexP @ Oct 18th 2007 9:48AM
Drunk gaming, the drug of lonely fools.
FOXHOUND @ Oct 18th 2007 9:59AM
I wasn't lonely, I had booze. :p
Sean @ Oct 18th 2007 10:24AM
"I wasn't lonely, I had booze."
Amen!
kinshadow @ Oct 18th 2007 12:23PM
The cake is a lie
Shadow Hog @ Oct 18th 2007 9:43AM
I tried this very procedure with gm_construct a few days back. It was pretty weird. Trying it in HL2 itself just takes the cake, though.
Do the cars/boats work? In gm_construct the cars were missing and the boats were bouncing up and down (seriously).
stu @ Oct 18th 2007 9:45AM
In the immortal words of Dr. Frankenfurter... ROCKERS!
Synner @ Oct 18th 2007 9:52AM
I don't know, seems to make HL2 not a lot of fun now. I think the draw of portal to me was in solving puzzles, not using it to chesse my way behind opponents.
smartguy1600 @ Oct 18th 2007 10:24AM
Agreed, but if you consider the idea of using the portal gun in new, specifically designed areas that combine the puzzle solving aspects of Portal with the gunplay of Half Life, then I think you have a winner. That's what I'm hoping Episode 3 will largely be.
Saria the Cat @ Oct 18th 2007 1:55PM
Yeah, makes Half-Life way too easy. Kind of defeats the purpose of being paranoid all the time in FPS, always keeping your back to walls.
Now, imagine how much fun/terrifying/crazy it would be if THEY had portal guns as well. Now we've got something.
Wulf @ Oct 18th 2007 10:01AM
@copa, from the site:
"Sadly, NPC’s and enemies cannot pass through portals. However, almost all ammunition, from bullets shot to grenades tossed to objects flung with the gravity gun, can and will make their way through smoothly. "
Ethan @ Oct 18th 2007 11:56AM
Very inventive, and excellent comic timing (accidental obviously) when he walks, just like "ok then."
WiNG @ Oct 18th 2007 10:00AM
lol awesome!
PC > 360
Also I assume you still take fall damage in HL2, so don't do anything like try to make an infinite loop, or you're in for a world of hurt when you land.
WiNG @ Oct 18th 2007 10:02AM
ahahaha the TRASH CAN scene was the best.
Robobagins @ Oct 18th 2007 10:29AM
I straight up clapped when I saw that. Clapped. That's how it's done!
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Oct 18th 2007 10:10AM
Man Portal is an amazing game. Though I do think its inclusion in Half-Life 2 would make the game much easier.
depl0y @ Oct 18th 2007 1:11PM
Tried it out, but it isn't flawless yet, the portal gun seems buggy in normal Half Life 2 levels and it would be cool if Valve would release a patch where you can just spawn the portal gun in normal HL2 (so you can play a complete game without having to load maps everytime).
Zarim @ Oct 18th 2007 10:56AM
One thing I never understood about HL2 is that a lot of the road signs appear to be in Russian yet everyone speaks English with an American accent.
WiNG @ Oct 18th 2007 11:15AM
Combine supression field.
Psaakyrn @ Oct 18th 2007 11:30AM
Actually, it's more likely because people were translocated there.
Rymix @ Oct 18th 2007 11:06AM
That's the best thing I have ever seen.
blooh (CDF - Nipple Ring) @ Oct 18th 2007 11:13AM
you can't open a port below an enemy and have them fall to their doom? aw man
and that player was using godmode, that's the way to not die from portal falls
Shadow Hog @ Oct 18th 2007 11:50AM
He was running it through Portal itself, IIRC. This means that, despite being in Half-Life 2 levels where everyone will call you Gordon Freeman, you will probably see Chell through the portals, foot braces and all, and also means that, like Portal, falling from really tall heights is not fatal (unless they put an "instant kill" block where you're falling, which is entirely possible).
What you need to do is spawn Weighted Companion Cubes and then use the Gravity Gun to kill the Combine with it. Now THAT is a faithful companion.
blooh (CDF - Nipple Ring) @ Oct 18th 2007 11:58AM
yeah, i read the article. i wonder if you could load the portal gun among other portal resources in hl2, the way they loaded hl2 resources in portal
also, hl2 is awesome. i remember one time i fucked around with the gravity settings enough so that when things got hit they lost their attachment to gravity and floated like in space
Ben @ Oct 18th 2007 12:00PM
My friends and I ordered 3 copies of Orange Box from Toys R Us (buy 2 get one free until Saturday). Until it gets here I'm keeping myself busy with the flash version of Portal.
WiNG @ Oct 18th 2007 12:34PM
Actually the Flash version is a pretty good idea of what the real game is like, minus the humor. What level are you on, I'm stuck on 38!
Ben @ Oct 18th 2007 12:51PM
I'm working on level 28
blooh (CDF - Nipple Ring) @ Oct 18th 2007 12:55PM
yeah 38 was a toughie, take out the turrets first though, it makes it a lot easier
and on 39/40, remember you can jump pretty high and you can glitch portals a lil bit thru the holes in walls while jumping
randomshagz @ Oct 18th 2007 12:19PM
Until it gets here I'm keeping myself busy with the flash version of Portal.
lol that sucks
Robert @ Oct 18th 2007 12:49PM
PICK UP THAT CAN!
exit stencil @ Oct 18th 2007 12:56PM
I miss Weighted Companion Cube.
This is the best thing i've seen all week.
rDr4g0n @ Oct 18th 2007 3:00PM
i must say that the ending to portal was probably one of the best endings ive experienced in any game ever.
ishtar @ Oct 18th 2007 6:15PM
Do anyone now of a mirror of the GCFscape? The likned page seems to be down :(
sam @ Oct 23rd 2007 11:23PM
it's so mind bending even my video card started bending backwards trying to figure out the geometry of portal in half life 2
