Self-described Australian "lifestyle technology guide" Smarthouse is citing "a senior Toshiba executive in Singapore" as saying that Microsoft and Toshiba are working on a new Xbox 360 with a built-in HD DVD drive. "An Xbox with a built in HD DVD drive is critical. They and we are working on it," the unnamed executive told the site, adding that the system might have Toshiba branding rather than Microsoft (Panasonic Q, anyone?). As if that weren't enough, the article also hints at the possibility of wireless networking, an HDTV tuner and and MP3 player dock for the super-system, which would at the point probably have the MSRP of a small house.
This isn't the first time that rumors of an internal HD DVD drive for the 360 have leaked out, and it's just as hard to give them much credence now. The HD DVD-free system is soundly beating the Blu-ray equipped PS3 in sales and the $179 external drive is already serving the smallish segment market that wants high-def movies. Then again, with Blu-ray movies threatening to run away with the high-def movie crown and developers saying additional storage space is a must, maybe Microsoft is finally ready to make a strong move toward the format.
Or maybe not. According to Smarthouse, the new device won't be announced until late 2008 or even the January 2009 CES. We're not holding our breath but we're not exactly ignoring the possibility either.

"And I agree, the PS3 doesn't have a strong game line-up right now, but what are all you XBots going to say when the library gets bigger?"
We'll just site the fact that all their fans seem to be assholes.

Has anyone noticed the new HD-DVD movies with a DVD on one side and the HD-DVD on the other? What if - Microsoft offered publishers the option to release content on these hybrid DVD's. All games will still be released on DVD9, with the option to flip it over and use higher resolution textures on the HD-DVD version. It could be a stepping stone that still preserves backwards compatibility and moves toward the larger space standard.

Love me some 360.. but I won't buy it if it comes out. I'll stick with my launch Premium thank you very much! Besides, I have the add-on. :)

Microsoft doesn't need to build in an HD DVD player into the 360.
You cite that "Blu-ray movies threatening to run away with the high-def movie crown" but I cry fowl. The early numbers support no such conclusion. Yes there was a surge of Blu-Ray movies reportedly shipped (which probably includes the 5 free titles they've been giving away for months). It's been a back and forth battle though as HD DVD has outsold Blu-Ray in stand alone players and on titles available in both formats. BUT-- the current market for high definition movies is so insignificant, it's not making a dent on anything. It pales in comparison to DVD.
The truth is, we're stuck with both Blu-Ray and HD DVD format for the foreseeable future, which believe me will be several years.
So far consumers have been slow to totally embrace either format.

Since Microsoft already said game content will never be on HD-DVD, what's the point of buying an Xbox360 with the HD-DVD drive built in? Oh, yea, so you can buy movies on that dying format.. uhhhhh.

I don't think you can declare yourself both an "early adopter" and "tired of getting screwed". That's a partnership you ain't breaking up.

This makes sense since Microsoft is getting KILLED by pirates who have raped the DVD drive with the Xtreme firmware and get all the games for free from BT and the Usenet.
It certainly makes sense to go with a next-gen drive to protect the system.

Would be nice. I am loving my two HD-DVD players now (360 add on and Toshiba Stand alone) But it would sure be sweet to have one built into my 360, would clean up my stero cabnet abit =). If you have not gotten a chance to check out HD-DVD for your self you really need to. IT is Sweet!

By 09 all the DVD 360s will have RRoD'ed and everyone will go out and buy the 3600. Perfect marketing strategy.

Sounds good to me, because I still have choice.
It's questionable from a marketing perspective, though. This definitely wouldn't happen until the 360 hardware itself sells at a profit.

Rumor ... SMASHED.
Never gonna happen, why should Microsoft (which are sitting on the fence and wait what happens in the HD format war) do this?

I love the rationale of PS3 fanboys... "Hey, games will come out soon! And its better!!! YEAH!! And the 360 RRoD! ROFL M$"
Lets face it everyone, Microsoft is kicking the ever loving crap outta PS3 in this gaming generation, and it is all because of Sony acting like arrogant jerks and forcing hardware no one wants down people's throats.
The PS3 has no games and barely any future. Exclusive titles have dropped like flies, and not too many people are buying a PS3. Sony and its loyal fanbase that are trying to justify $600 - $750 for the console and a few games but it just doesn't wash... and it most likely never will. The online system is a joke and the console as far as power goes is no stronger than the 360 in execution, no matter how it looks on paper to 13 year olds who say "OH LOOKS 7 CORES ITS BETTOR!!!11"
As for me, I have no interest in replacing my DVD collection on ANY format that titles start at $25 for. I could care less about HD-DVD or BluRay. I have two 360's, one a launch Premium and one an Elite. Both work fine and do what I bought them to do... PLAY GREAT GAMES with a VASTLY SUPERIOR ONLINE EXPERIENCE.

Seems to me a HD DVD equipped 360 version, and not the top end version they are talking about here, could be released at any time soon.
The current XBOX 360 all ready physically accommodates the Toshiba HD DVD drive as part of it's chassis build configuration, so it would only need a green light from $M to make this happen all most immediately.

Everyone is saying $M wont fit the HD DVD drive to the unit.
From $M point of view, I think they need too, and fast.
Think about it, HD DVD drives should be very cheap now, and Tosh will maybe carry the pain if they aren't cheap enough yet.
It puts $M into a position of strength, they can release games on DVD and HD DVD, or combo disc, if and when it is ever required, so as not to upset the current owner base.It just gives them options, even if they don't use it. The main thing is though, it 'de powers' PS3s edge.
Many people are buying the PS3 just because of blu ray, so it makes business sense to counter that edge.
So, if you have the choice of a HD DVD player/console with a superb games library as well, it gives $M huge bragging rights over PS3.
It also takes away the argument that PS3 is the tru next gen console and $M is only current gen.
I think it makes sense from $M point of view that they need to do this sooner rather then later.
