Xbox 360 HD DVD offers expanded; Heroes free with purchase at Best Buy starting Sunday
Cheapy D's army of frugal Fannies bring word that this week's Best Buy flyer (beginning Oct. 21) reveals Heroes on HD DVD is free with the purchase of an Xbox 360 HD DVD player. So, if we're grasping this properly, if you purchase the Xbox 360's HD DVD player from Best Buy you'll get King Kong (still bundled in), Heroes, and five free HD DVDs. The five free movies offer has also now been expanded to Europe. If the Xbox 360 HD DVD unit ends up being true, this ridiculous HD DVD vs. Blu-ray format war might actually be heating up rather than ending. All we know is that the consumers who wait for this mess to end are the ones who'll "win."

I get Heroes for free through the air.
ruibing @ Oct 19th 2007 5:15PM
I would have preferred House MD, Dexter, or Office.
Dave @ Oct 19th 2007 6:47PM
Damn! This makes me wish I'd waited. Heroes is $70.
the_game_master @ Oct 19th 2007 8:49PM
While its a really cool offer, I just can't get it.
Not that I'm not a fan of Heroes, cause I'm not but.
I don't see the need for an high definition DVD player when I have a pefectly good upconverting high definition DVD which does a good job for HDTV that's ONLY 30" inches.
Spooner @ Oct 19th 2007 9:25PM
@ the_game_master
That's because you only have a 30" HDTV. You'll change your mind if you had a 50+ inc HDTV.
blooh (TIDF - Nipple Ring) @ Oct 19th 2007 3:20PM
ugh, heroes sucks
and i'm waiting for the format war to end and for hdtv's to become standard, like tube tv's are now, before i consider getting a hd player
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Oct 19th 2007 5:26PM
Just go die in a corner. Heroes is fucking awesome.
blooh (TIDF - Nipple Ring) @ Oct 19th 2007 7:15PM
it reminds me of this
http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2005/04/27
which would be a terrible show, just like heroes
upz @ Oct 19th 2007 3:21PM
I seem to be one of the few comic book / video game / sci fi fans that thinks Heroes is an absolutely craptastic show, but even I'd say that's one hell of a deal.
blooh (TIDF - Nipple Ring) @ Oct 19th 2007 3:25PM
i hate it too
Grey Fox @ Oct 19th 2007 3:31PM
Seconded. I'm still on the fence about the show but damn is that a good deal.
Anticrawl @ Oct 20th 2007 3:26PM
You could totally buy this and use the DVD for a cheapass gift idea. I've never really heard of Heroes other than how Tim from cad-comics raves about it on a daily bases.

I love this show. I still have Season 1 in ed unopened( impulse buy). Maybe now, because I really wanted heroes season 1 in hd but I didn't have the add on.
Snukadaman @ Oct 19th 2007 3:31PM
i also got the regular dvd set and still havent watched it...this deal is good...but i think im going too wait for more of a price drop maybe?
Gangway @ Oct 19th 2007 3:41PM
I think HD-DVD will end up winning. Its a great time to pick up a player.
EDGE @ Oct 19th 2007 3:43PM
and why do you think they will win ? Because of this promotion ?
NATO_Duke @ Oct 19th 2007 3:45PM
Edge +1
JJ Rooster @ Oct 19th 2007 3:46PM
Agreed, and solely because Toshiba is bringing the standalone prices crashing down. There will be a $200 player very soon, and what's the cheapest BR player? $400?
EDGE @ Oct 19th 2007 3:48PM
Do you honestly think a Blu-Ray player costing $200 is not possible ?
Ed @ Oct 19th 2007 4:11PM
no. Because blue-ray is snobbish like that.
EDGE @ Oct 19th 2007 4:16PM
Blu-Ray is sentient ?
Ed @ Oct 19th 2007 4:21PM
Yes and it is a jerk.
arrrgh @ Oct 19th 2007 4:34PM

arrrgh @ Oct 19th 2007 4:36PM
I heard blu-ray made a joke about everyone's mom. that's why it will lose
Cellien @ Oct 19th 2007 4:37PM
$199 stand alone HD-DVD players are available retail, if you look at the right places. Even some Walmarts.
Dio @ Oct 19th 2007 3:27PM
Someone told me that you can get five free Blu-ray movies when you get the PS3 bundled with Motorstorm? I'm not sure though. If it is true, the HD DVD deal is still better.
Ryan @ Oct 19th 2007 3:57PM
This sure seems trollish but I'll bite.
You also get 5 free HD DVD's when you buy the HD DVD addon.
Cellien @ Oct 19th 2007 4:35PM
Lame attempt at trying to hide your "Buy a PS3 - Blu-Rayzis are betta" crusade.
Dio @ Oct 19th 2007 5:59PM
Uh... How is this trolling when I'm in favor of the HD DVD? You should read my comment again.
CaptainAmericaX @ Oct 19th 2007 9:14PM
I think Dio was actually being sincere you guys...
Anyways this is a good deal. I'm saving up money to get a HDTV and HD DVD player by the end of this year.
I MUST have Transformers in HD DVD. And I must be able to experience RE5, Alan Wake, and GTAIV in HD in 2008!

FYI: The five free HD DVD movies offer has also been expanded to Canada:
http://www.xbox.com/en-ca/hardware/x/xbox360hddvdplayer/hddvdnow/default.htm
http://assets.xbox.com/en-ca/pdf/hddvd.pdf
But I'm not sure if Canadian BestBuy stores will participate in the Heros bundle, more often than not Canadian stores don't follow promotions.
Jay @ Oct 19th 2007 5:54PM
That's an awesome deal ... wow. Too bad I already have the player.
mike @ Oct 19th 2007 3:37PM
no bes buy canada stores do not have this deal.
Also, More and more deals are starting to pop up for the hd-dvd drive (recently $145 at TRU). and now this. With the cheaper ps3 coming out, Im predicting a price cut in this hd-dvd player. So any value on this deal is lost as by next month im sure you will be able to purchase heroes hddvd (around $50) + this drive for less or the same price.
kennethrios @ Oct 19th 2007 3:48PM
Were this a wresting match, this move by Microsoft would be like a drop kick that sends the foe flying over the ropes and out of the ring and near Jim Ross. It isn't over but it looks really cool.
mfed3 @ Oct 19th 2007 5:25PM
why does everyone think every move in the HD DVD side is by Microsoft. this is best buy doing the deal. its not microsoft versus sony, its the sequel to the dvd forum, the hd dvd forum vs sony and the blu-ray supporters. microsoft is only one company on the board.
NATO_Duke @ Oct 19th 2007 3:51PM
I dont know why people think a deal giving Hero's with the player makes this a BluRay killer. Its an offer that comes and goes. How does that kill a format?
XanthouS @ Oct 19th 2007 3:56PM
Heroes is "LOST for Dummies".
arrrgh @ Oct 19th 2007 4:35PM

Jeffrin @ Oct 19th 2007 4:41PM
Sike. "Lost" is lost. Dummy.
blooh (TIDF - Nipple Ring) @ Oct 19th 2007 7:19PM
i thought both were for dummies
Ryan @ Oct 19th 2007 4:01PM
Edge...
Not debating who will win but if there are $200 HDDVD players around when the cheapest BluRay player (which also happens to be a game conole) is $400 do you expect the general public to just wait around until the BluRay player is $200 (at which point if this trend continues the HDDVD player will be sub $100)?
EDGE @ Oct 19th 2007 4:07PM
Well, right now, the general public is buying more Blu-Ray movies.
Cellien @ Oct 19th 2007 4:42PM
Right now, people are buying more stand alone HD-DVD players. I bet you ANYTHING that October changes who has sold more discs...seeing that Transformers HD-DVD came out and was sold out at many stores. It doesnt take much to off-set the balance since so few of both formats have sold.
Ryan @ Oct 19th 2007 4:02PM
So much for the reply button.
Word of the street(IDF-Digital Ruler). @ Oct 19th 2007 4:23PM
A) Heroes sucks, it slightly better than the piece of crap that was Mutant X and that's not saying much.
B) Fans rather buy the DVD or watch it on youtube.
C) These new formats are useless, no one wants to see Bratz on HD-DVD or Blu-Ray and other than the Lord of the rings and maybe Silent hill (maybe)there aren’t other movies that would benefit of the HD.
D) I just wanted a point D, crappy cliché joke I know live with it.
F) The price isn’t that bad but still adding stuff to the XB360 just seems like a bad idea also that I haven’t seen a lot of HD-DVD, Blu-Ray movies in Blockbuster lately and the few they have don’t really make wanna throw 170$ on a HD-DVD.
Ed @ Oct 19th 2007 4:55PM
E)???
G)Profit!
evilkoala @ Oct 19th 2007 5:24PM
A) Once you start actually watching movies in HD you'll understand why a good upconverting dvd player cannot match actual high def discs.
B) Here's an idea, rent your movies from netflix. Get all the HD-DVDs (or blu ray discs) you want for a fraction of the price.
C) I don't know what fans you know but most people I know would rather watch their favorite show in the best possible quality (and rewatch in this case)
D) Adding stuff to the 360 is great. Means that if you want to watch movies you can... better than nothing imho.
Word of the street(IDF-Digital Ruler). @ Oct 19th 2007 6:05PM
1-Batman Begins really doesn't look all that different I think it looks the same than in cable IMO again I believe only LotR benefits of the HD.
2-I'll give it a try
3-Nop still most of the fans rather watch it again for free also the seasons in DVD are cheaper not to mention that buying a whole new device to watch a TV show ¬-¬
4-Other than a intercooler you don't want to add more things to the XB360,I don’t know you but I don’t want add-ons in my consoles, is cool when is part of the package tho’.
5-Dance!
