A really real Halo 3 Da Vinci Code Easter egg
32
Usually video games are chalk full of secret images, objects or jokes that we call Easter eggs and are things developers hide in their game for the sole reason of having fun hiding stuff. But rarely do we get to use the coined term "Easter egg" so literally as is the case with the latest Halo 3 Easter egg named the Da Vinci Code Egg. Per the video above, you can see that Project Mod Gaming found numerous colorful eggs high atop multiplayer map Sandtrap, each with what looks to be a secret Da Vinci code printed on them. We aren't sure what the special code means, if the symbols are merely decoration for the eggs or why "Dani California" was chosen for the YouTube video, but we are going to fuel the rumor fire and say that this "code" will reveal something. What something? We aren't sure, but we want this Halo 3 Easter egg cracked and cooked sunny side up (we couldn't resist).
[Thanks, ProjectModChamp]

Stuff like this is pretty cool. Kind of interesting that someone spent a bunch of time investigating this map.

i love it when people find easter eggs in games (especially halo cuz it just further proves how unbelievably awesome the guys at bungie are (rvb conversation in h3?!)) but this one doesn't do it for me. its not, you know, "funny".

eh, when I found out that there was a character called Sergeant Reynolds voiced by Nathan Fillion, I'll admit I got a bit of a chubby.

eh, the hidden chocolate egg in Vice City was the first instance of a literal easter egg I've seen.

These are also in Halo 2, they are the level roots. No clue as to why the have code on them though.

I don't think that is a easter egg. Reason being that the texture used is in fact a texture used in Halo 2 for vista when you make your own custom map and you skewed your oprginial textures up.

i'm not sure what it's supposed to be, but if you watch it the second time they fly into it (around -1:20) you can see that it's not even close to rounded as an egg should be. It's a shape, with details, but with a generic texture.
I'm sure if they just wanted to put an egg shape in, they could make it as smooth as visibly possible.

Agreed, the map is the same used to eliminate seems in the textures. Usually with ABC and 123 in a grid. While it's similar in shape and color to an easter egg, the Da Vinci code was a bunch of symbols, not letters and numbers, am I right?
Also, the bright pink & blue colors are also normal in UV maps.

You guys.. you know there is a real simple reason why the "egg" has the "codes" on it. Its because its default texture coordinates that are used to make sure that the texture placement is not warped. As for the reason why there is an egg on each side. Simple dude that developed the map used one large section and copied it to create a general large starting point and forgot that there was a sphere or as everyone likes to call it an "Easter Egg".

I know I'm a little late to the party, but this is a texture for mapping your UV coordinates on a mesh. Standard step in texturing an object.

There is code because there is no texture on it. In Halo 2 map maker, any maps with no thextures had that same coding.

The one thing I don't get is why do these guy have to make a fucking 3 minute video on what should take only about 15 seconds?

You guys seem to already know what it is, but it reminds me of the "garbage data" on top of the SMB maps. It was the physical embodiment of the level information.

Its a ball of Hex code. This is quite old. Sorry to burst your bubble

Hate to break it to you guys, this was just a piece of level code.
It's covered in HEX.
In campaign, you can find them by launching over huge walls and skipping load points.

All this does is promote these Project Mod guys. Stupid clans.
And Champ, how about no music next time, or find some instrumental stuff. Or better yet, just the sounds from the game is fine. Or even better, don't make a video!

I've heard all the opinions, input and educated guesses...
I've never seen Bungie put add something into a game or story that didn't have some sort of purpose or meaning...
I didn't have a chance to see because the damn bastard floating around only stayed on an egg for 5 seconds...
BUT... I wouldn't be surprised if there was a pattern of letters or a formula of some kind on these objects...
The name of the planet that the Master Chief is floating towards possibly? Or the species on this planet? Or maybe more cryptic Forerunner poetry...
If you guys want some exciting news... I have a source that has informed me of somethign quite interesting...
Apparently that planet you see at the end of the game on Legendary... Is a distant Forerunner planet just outside the blast radius of the rings... They are the survivors of the first Halo Activation... They are advanced humans...
And a spartan human is about to crash land directly into one of their populated cities...
What's gonna happen?? ... We'll have to wait and see...

@26. you've got it all wrong, that is the prison planet from alien 3 that ripley crashes into at the start of the movie. I figure they used the alien/aliens ending for halo 3, so why not start a new game in the same way as the movies. master chief vs. aliens.

These aren't eggs, they're hacky sacs and there are six of them. Not really anything new, I discovered the sixth one finally early last week.

If you look around sandtrap, there are stone tablets (gold walls) with strange writing on them. Maybe these eggs are used to translate them?
It seems wierd that they have letters on them. Although, if you read the gold walls from the side, you can make out common characters and symbols, even letters and numbers sometimes.

Actually, it looks like a light source that was never turned into a light by the editor, and therefore received the default texture, but doesn't glow.
Like while the map was first being done, it might have had a lighting array at the top of it (kinda' like the lights in "tombstone" the halo 2 multiplayer map). They decided to remove the bank of lights, and when they removed the bsp's, they left the light behind and it got skinned.
I wish we knew.. you know, to confirm our guesses and stuff.
