That's the 2003 role-playing game and not the town in Montenegro, mind you. While an MMO based on the beautiful coastal establishment of Kotor would indeed be a unique and thoroughly refreshing prospect, we don't fancy its chances against World of Warcraft. The Star Wars brand and universe, however, might fare better -- as long as it's not Galaxies. Instead, it'll be Knights of the Old Republic, according to Primotech.
Citing a "source close to BioWare," Alex Petraglia reports that BioWare's mystery MMO -- due in 2009 and reliant on Streambase technology -- will be set in the universe established by the critically acclaimed Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic series of role-playing games. The first was developed by BioWare, while the second arrived courtesy of Obsidian Entertainment. The first title especially was hailed for its engaging plot, substantial characterization and general hostility towards organic meatbags. In other words, an exemplary single-player experience.
An important question then (besides "Is this for real?"), is "How do you translate that to an MMO?" The cynical answer, of course, is "You don't. You make World of Warcraft with lightsabers." More questions are raised when considering EA's recent acquisition of BioWare -- would that not create some publishing intricacies for a game only expected in 2009? The central group in such a deal would be LucasArts, but alas, "LucasArts doesn't comment on rumors or speculation." Oh, but you can, dear reader.

Best established Star Wars Universe besides the original trilogy's era. It would be awesome...but I'd still rather have KOTOR 3.

Knights of the Online Republic? Color me uninterested. The World of Warcraft clones won't stop for a while and even Bioware won't be immune to it's evil cookie cutting pull. Let's wait for an adventurous developer to finally break the MMO genre from the mold of EverQuest (what WoW is modeled after). Hell MMOs are being so cookie cutter any more that they're even using WoW's UI. How shitty is that?
Let this one die as a rumor.

If you want a "different" MMO, try Planetside. (MMOFPS)
And for that matter, the KotOR battle system is vastly different from the WoW battle system, being derived from the turn-based d20 system.

THis would be interesting to see...especially since Bioware holds no special license over the Star WArs universe, unless of course LA decides to put down SWG and break their joint venture with SOE.
otherwise i just dont see how thats going to work out too well.

KOTOR was one of the best games ever in my opinion. A close second and third to Wasteland and Half Life 2. A MMO wouldn't do this game justice.

This is relevant to my interests. They've done (aside from the total pooch-screw of the ending of #2, which I accept was not entirely the devs fault) an amazing job with the Old Republic era. I don't give much of a crap about Star Wars these days, save for a lingering crush on Han Solo, and the Old Republic.
Hell, even the KOTOR comic is generally dang good. (I buy it in trade, so I don't know if it's still relevant... but some of it may explain and tie up the games. Main character might be the Exile, etc.)

No. This is awful. How about they focus on what they do well and make an Epic single player RPG. I have had enough of everyone trying to ride the MMO pony and pump out WoW clones. Take an example from Blizzard who probably could have put out a MMO for StarCraft and made another million dollar baby that we would all have to feed monthly.
But I will most likely be eating my hat about this when it comes out and is amazing.

They opened up a new studio for it. It's not like they're NOT making anymore RPG's. It's not mutual exclusive.

If Biowares mmo really is a kotor based, or even Star Wars based mmo, it'd be the biggest disappointment they can give me. Especially if it is going to be anywhere near WoW with lightsabres.

Let it not be turn based you go then i go format is lame... they dont have to be like WoW but take basic concepts and expand upon them. God donr make it like tabula rasa... another good thing that WoW established was two waring factions. So it should be one faction vs the other to make a infinite competition.

@ Kazi you need to STfu because just because a bunch of MMo's get put out that suck doesnt mean this one will... if done right it can be great.

Take the awesomeness KOTOR and the Star Wars universe.
Take the MMO side of Guild Wars with its very similar to KOTOR control system.
Work on the issue of Guild wars feeling alot like co-op single player... Make it more MMO-Like. And make sure, unlike Guild wars, it has a proper market for selling items like EVE-Online does.
Perhaps like the way Guild Wars 2 is set to be.
And if they can make it free to play just like Guild Wars.
= Uber win
Could well be the best game EVER.
But juding by how much KOTOR sucked thanks to Lucas Arts forcing its release and its bugs and plot hole still to this day unfixed.....
It'll probably end in epic fail.

I meant KOTOR2 of course.... KOTOR the original was uber awesome.
I mean KOTOR 2 had some great gameplay elements, especially the whole turning your companions to your will thing. Really nice. But what the hell with the damn storylines that went nowhere? The insane number of bugs? The multiple endings that were never completed? Missed potential to the max.
Still waiting for Team Gizka to finish its restoration project. Its been years now. What was it, 2004?
