Agreed.

Anyone who has noticed Sony make a proprietary format generation after generation knows they won't conform.

And someone is always going to want a bigger piece of the pie, thats how the US/most international markets works.

Maybe we should work on a unified HD movie format first?

hmmm. cd, dvd, and now blu ray. You do realize that Sony is just one company amongst many that created and support blu ray.
UMD is the only propietary format. Even nintendo had its own with gamecube. At least Sony isn't using propietary HDD's or BT headsets.

Idealistically, ONE console to rule them all would be gaming heaven. Gamers have the chance to play every game, and game devs would have the chance to tap every gamer.
But in sad reality, this would most definitely lead to the final downfall of the gaming industry.

Soon Nintendo Sony and Microsoft would work together to set up nukes in Cuba.

What a brilliant statement - one console = communism. I'm happy to see the bar set so high for intelligent discourse here.

Don't get me wrong; a unified console is a terrible idea, for more reasons than I'd care to list. But let's try not to be so blind to the issues at stake here. To begin, there is something to be said for standards; regarding web design, for instance, the W3C is so very important insofar as it allows developers and companies responsible for browsers to come together and decide upon rules for the proper implementation of HTML, CSS, etc. The greater purpose served is that every website need not be redesigned for each potential browser on the market, which would be costly and unnecessary. The different browsers still, ideally, maintain their identity by offering different interfaces and further options: Firefox's live bookmarks, Opera's speed dial, IE's intended familiarity of UI, etc. The important thing to consider is that the W3C is not imposed from above, meaning it doesn't conform to your Communist fantasies, but instead is reached by agreement and participation.

But wait, the W3C actually has a bit of an uphill battle due to Microsoft's refusal to fully participate. Why would MS do that? They aren't avoiding standardization in order to further competition, but just the opposite: since IE is the default browser for so many, it comprises a tremendous share of the potential users that may visit a site. MS doesn't care, therefore, about standards, since developers will be forced to make their pages IE compatible.

You see the problem there? Within the market's system itself, it is possible for one company to obtain such a near-monopoly that its proprietary rules and formats end up being more totalizing and dictatorial than a participation-based adoption of standards. The situation isn't so simple as you might think.

Again, regarding consoles, I don't believe that standards would be a viable or desirable solution. Nonetheless, let's grow up a bit with these communism vs. competition fantasies, alright?

No never one, minimum of 2. Microsoft and Nintendo. MS will merge their console and PC gaming, possibly to the point of games being crossplayable with the same disks. Same SDK for sure

And Nintendo will rule the handheld department for at least a decade more. They will use their profits for casual console undertakings, revolutionizing (and failing at least once) because they can afford to.

I like it.

It's not as far off as you would think. Consoles would simply become purpose built PCs. Think mac mini, but for gaming.

Actually, you just pointed out how "far off" this actually is. Everybody thought Macintosh computers were going the way of the dodo a decade ago. And I'm not just talking about their gaming applications, which obviously pale in comparison to the PC. While the tech industry trumpeted the need for a single, unified standard (something I actually agree with), there were still droves of people out there who wanted something different.

I would like to see a unified module console that allowed for upgrades. The base model could be level 1, 2-3 years later they release level 2, 2-3 years after that, level 3. It could be a simple slide in cpu/gpu module. This would keep the console more cutting edge while allowing you to save money but not having to buy the whole thing. Games could just be developed for the varying levels. "gears of war 4 for Unicon Level 2".

While it would make a lot of sense, there'll never be just one console. I kinda wish that consoles would be similar to 3DO, with different companies making their own versions of a specific console, albeit with different extra features. As long as a company can churn out good games, then there's no way that one unified console could hurt their business.

agreed. This is what's going to kill the industry. The more shit microsoft and sony put into their console, the more expensive they will be. And the more expensive they are, the more people will become alienated by the high prices of gaming.

Microsoft and Sony need to take a page from Nintendo's book and release a "gaming console" not some media center. Now I know plenty of people here will disagree, saying that they need their HDMI's and linux and other bullshit like that. While you think you may need it, you don't. None of that crap is needed to have an enjoyable gaming experience. If Sony and Microsoft can do away with all that stuff, they can keep prices down and people will continue to buy their consoles.

Stop advancing gaming? Are you really that stupid, Shagi? Consoles didn't start containing the state of the art hardware until the N64. And then it was ONLY the N64. Playstation 1 was a 32 bit system, no powerhouse there. PS2 was the weakest of its console generation. It was gamecube and Xbox that had near cutting edge technology in them. Now this generation: Xbox360 has a 3 core processor with unified memory, and PS3 has a largely experimental chip with an experimental format. All top of the line, all top dollar items.

Nintendo is the only company who took a step back, got perspective on where hardware makers were headed (to financial disaster), and where we had been before, and realized that the hardware in game consoles was a generation ahead of its time, literally. Wanna know why Wii is so successful? because its the right amount of power for the most amount of people for the right price.

NES was weak compared to its PC counterparts. SNES was weak compared to its PC counterparts (Pentium anyone), PS1 was weak compared to its PC counterparts (Pentium 3 anyone?) PS2 was weak compared to its PC counterparts (Pentium 4/AMD64). Xbox 360 is strong compared to its PC counterparts (triple core PPC vs largely single and dual core x86). Cell is strong compared to its PC counterparts (1 PPC core with 8 asymmetrical SPEs). And you wonder why PS3 cost 600 dollars at launch, and why 360 cost 400 dollars at launch. Both of them double their previous generations counterpart in price.

The industry started dreaming way to big, and fortunately, sales have brought them down to earth. Wanna know why arcades have died in america? Because the machine at home is as powerful or more powerful than the 5000 dollar arcade cabinet. It used to be the only place to go to get your high end gaming on was the arcade. Now its your livingroom. Are we really better off this way?

I really hope Nintendo wins, and wins HARD. Then we can bring the industry back to its senses. You don't need the top of the line cutting edge technology to "win". You just need a fun platform with fun games that people enjoy playing. This technological arms race has gone on long enough.

So Nintendo's refusal to embrace MS and Sony's stupidity is a consumer "rip off?" You live on a strange planet.

Note to Shagi: business is about making a profit. Just because Microsoft and Sony are willing to burn boatloads of cash to earn your undying love (mission accomplished!) doesn't mean it's the right thing to do.

Nintendo has made a good system but I don't think they fill the needs of the entire market. Just look at the attach rate on 360 games and you will see that people want HD gaming and the type of games that it offers. If you listen to people with FLOD issues with the Wii with reported around 70% of people that are not playing it then I have to question if Nintendo really is a widespread answer for all gamers. Though I do think playtime on Wii will rise a bit more when they get some more high profile online games but for now my PC and PS3 and 360 see way more use.

Your comment is much appreciated. I am also utterly bored and depressed by the reduction of gaming to a hardware arms race. That's not the future; the future is making electronics that fit their purpose intelligently without excess in power or price.

I don't see the relation between VHS and consoles however. Competition might be good for some things but formats is not one of them. Look at the Blu Ray HD DVD clusterfuck going on right now. I don't know if one console would be a good idea but rest assured these companies, including MS and their deep pockets won't continue to lose their asses on hardware much longer. I could see still having three consoles but all of them being gimped like the Wii in order for companies to make money on hardware. I guess if that happened it would be back to PC gaming for me.

It just wont happen. There will always be a person out there to make a competing product. Besides, he bitches about the costs and having to make hard decisions with multiple platforms - screw off with that. We all know that if there was one console it wouldn't make developers lower the prices of their games due to saving on dev costs. It would just make them buy nicer cars.

Go ahead, cry about the troubles with a market economy to someone else than the consumers - we generally like seeing that you have to innovate and make more than crap to survive off of us. One platform would equal super lazy development.

Oh yea? Who was trying to compete against DVD? Who was trying to compete against CD? After Betamax and 8 Track died out, who came along and attempted to coexist with VHS and audio cassette?

If there's a single dominant standard format, nobody's going to be stupid enough to attempt to go against it. And anyone who does try will find themselves at the butt-end of a MiniDisc/ATRAC-style fiasco.

It seemed like an absurd comment at first glance, but then I took note of how the hardware often sells at a loss. It's possible, even if I don't think it's likely any time soon. I'd be more willing to shell out $600 on a console if it played 360, PS3, and Wii games, not to mention the smaller pile of controllers and accessories.

I think Microsoft is the most likely, actually.

If the Xbox doesn't come out on top or at least VERY close (or if it doesn't make any/much profit), I can see their investors and such reigning it in and trying a more direct approach to sneaking a media center into people's living rooms.
