If you want to experience rumble with your PS3 games as soon as possible, you're going to have to go on a quest of sorts. First, time travel into next month (or wait a couple of weeks) and import a DualShock 3 from Japan. Next, you're going to need the PS3's new firmware, 1.94, but sadly, it isn't available for download yet.
But don't be deterred. Shacknews is reporting that if you pick up Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction (the first retail game with built-in rumble support) you'll be able to find 1.94 right there on the disc. Imagine the convenience. Now, unless you have obsessive compulsive disorder, we have no idea why you'd need the firmware weeks before the controller's even out. But at least we know a certain former Double Dare host is going to sleep well tonight.

So is this going to replace the SIXAXIS? Are people going to have to update their firmware just to use their new controllers?

That's a good question. Is SIXAXIS support being dropped completely? Or will the DS3 have 6XS as well?

My understanding is that the regular and the new controllers will both be supported.
If after the patch you have the new controllers, you can activate the vibration with the center PS button. If you have the old controllers w/out vibration, then you wont feel anything. Otherwise, they aren't changing support for the sixaxis that I have seen. Why would they?

They could stop making the SIXAXIS. In that case, any PS3 owners who want to buy another controller would need updated firmware, either from a download or a game.
I have no point.

i believe the new controller says Dualshock 3 as well as SIXAXIS on the back of it. i could see them stopping production of the SIXAXIS but not dropping support for it. i mean who would buy a gimped controller after the Dualshock 3 came out anyway? unless the prices are significantly different.
then again, this is Sony we're talking about.....*cough* BC *cough*

ummm what are you talking about? Michael Bay wanted transformers to be on both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray. He wasn't playing any favorites.
But he's a shitty director who makes shitty movies (see Bad Boys 2). So who the fuck cares about him?

They won't, but your SIXAXIS controllers will start rumbling now. They've had the hardware to the whole time, they just needed this firmware.

arghhh!!! Really? He's signed back on??? GOD FUCKING DAMMIT!!! Well, there goes any hope of a good Transformers sequel.
Perfect example of Michael Bay's directing abilities.

Wait... Is it just me, or does the PS3 get a TON of firmware updates?
I mean, the Xbox get 2 major ones a year, and is a pristine, working console.
The PS3 gets one ever month, and... well, you can't exactly say its a fine working machine.

lol, you fail.. Keep telling yourself that.. hey, question for you: which company put $1,150,000,000.00 into a warranty fund to cover RRoD issues?

i didn't think anyone would ever argue the 360 is a pristine working console by any stretch of the imagination.

pristine, working console indeed...
as an owner of both, i haven't turned my PS3 off once in the past two weeks, when i'm not playing or if i'm playing the 360 i just let it do the folding@home.
there's no way i would leave my 360 running that long without worrying about it constantly.

I meant the solidity of the software, obviously not the hardware.

IN addendum: Which is blatantly obvious, since you know, firmware updates APPLY TO THE OPERATING SYSTEM.
Not the actual system. Fucking jump on the bandwagon boys, lets not even take a second to read the comment.
Dumbasses.

I never actually said it did. At all. Games were never mentioned in any of my posts.
The pure fact that it seems no one read or comprehends my post gives me very little faith in fellow gamers.

Wake me up when the PS3 comes with Dualshocks 3 that actually rumble in the box(regardless of how "So Last Gen" Sony says they are), IS back compat(so to swap PS2 for PS3), the price for the damn thing is 349.99 and has a decent library that the PS2 would be proud of. 'Till then:

So why the hell do you flame Sony?
They obviously thought the children (you) outgrew the crappy vibration feature. well you didnt, so now they make a "new" controller with old functions WHICH YOU REQUESTED, and now you flame them cause they listened to the customers. God, theres more retards than flies.

Break something then try to act like the second coming when they make it as good as everyone else, and their previous consoles. Odd.

It all makes sense now:
"Rumble is a last gen feature"
"The next generation doesn't start until we say it does"
"we now say that Rumble is next gen"
