PS3's 1.94 firmware adds support for DualShock 3
If you want to experience rumble with your PS3 games as soon as possible, you're going to have to go on a quest of sorts. First, time travel into next month (or wait a couple of weeks) and import a DualShock 3 from Japan. Next, you're going to need the PS3's new firmware, 1.94, but sadly, it isn't available for download yet.
But don't be deterred. Shacknews is reporting that if you pick up Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction (the first retail game with built-in rumble support) you'll be able to find 1.94 right there on the disc. Imagine the convenience. Now, unless you have obsessive compulsive disorder, we have no idea why you'd need the firmware weeks before the controller's even out. But at least we know a certain former Double Dare host is going to sleep well tonight.

So is this going to replace the SIXAXIS? Are people going to have to update their firmware just to use their new controllers?
Hirsbrunner @ Oct 23rd 2007 3:27PM
That's a good question. Is SIXAXIS support being dropped completely? Or will the DS3 have 6XS as well?
NATO_Duke @ Oct 23rd 2007 4:14PM
My understanding is that the regular and the new controllers will both be supported.
If after the patch you have the new controllers, you can activate the vibration with the center PS button. If you have the old controllers w/out vibration, then you wont feel anything. Otherwise, they aren't changing support for the sixaxis that I have seen. Why would they?
mr nimblewick (SegaDF - Jogurt Ring) @ Oct 23rd 2007 4:20PM
They could stop making the SIXAXIS. In that case, any PS3 owners who want to buy another controller would need updated firmware, either from a download or a game.
I have no point.
Vidikron (FU) @ Oct 23rd 2007 4:32PM
My guess is that even if you didn't update the controllers would still work with the exception of rumble.
B1gC72 @ Oct 23rd 2007 10:03PM
i believe the new controller says Dualshock 3 as well as SIXAXIS on the back of it. i could see them stopping production of the SIXAXIS but not dropping support for it. i mean who would buy a gimped controller after the Dualshock 3 came out anyway? unless the prices are significantly different.
then again, this is Sony we're talking about.....*cough* BC *cough*
FOXHOUND @ Oct 23rd 2007 3:14PM
Well, this makes me wonder how much regular SIXAXIS controllers are worth, trade-in wise, to Gamestop or the local pawn...
And for the record, MARC SUMMERS would've been an excellent host for THE PRICE IS RIGHT. ¬_¬
Hikaru @ Oct 23rd 2007 3:15PM
So this is called SIXAXIS DUALSHOCK 3?
Macroy @ Oct 23rd 2007 3:19PM
You're probably going to catch hell for that OCD comment.
32_Footsteps @ Oct 23rd 2007 3:19PM
Man, the Mark Summers joke is just cold. The poor guy gave himself a mental breakdown to entertain us as kids. Have a heart there, Justin.
NATO_Duke @ Oct 23rd 2007 3:29PM
Was kind of a low blow.
Chameleon @ Oct 24th 2007 10:28AM
meh, agreed
Dale @ Oct 23rd 2007 3:23PM
Ah, the last next generation is finally beginning because Sony say so.
xXFenixKnight13Xx @ Oct 23rd 2007 3:24PM
Wow a controller with rumble in it?? Thats so revolutionary =) I cant wait to "play beyond"
Oh wait.........
Anticrawl @ Oct 23rd 2007 3:30PM
Sony better patent this rumble feature before Microsoft and Nintendo steal the idea.. oh wait.
Night Elve @ Oct 23rd 2007 4:02PM
No man you know whats revolutionary? That's right the originality of your comment.
With you and Cyro trolling around we really don't miss Fernando.
mr nimblewick (SegaDF - Jogurt Ring) @ Oct 23rd 2007 4:14PM
All of these comments are new and exciting!
Oh wait...
Anticrawl @ Oct 23rd 2007 5:42PM
I'm no troll, I like the PS3. I guess you're to hardcore of a fanboy to realize Sony can piss off it's own fans. Atleast they're heading in the right direction now, fixing their stupid mistakes.
RC @ Oct 23rd 2007 3:30PM

deaftly @ Oct 23rd 2007 4:26PM

qwerter @ Oct 23rd 2007 3:36PM
So is this post just about ranting on the ps3? wow thats pretty damn lame Joystiq dont you have anything better to do? or are you just mad cause michael bay didnt want his transformers movie on hddvd and said bluray was better?...i think soooo
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Oct 23rd 2007 3:41PM
ummm what are you talking about? Michael Bay wanted transformers to be on both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray. He wasn't playing any favorites.
But he's a shitty director who makes shitty movies (see Bad Boys 2). So who the fuck cares about him?
GRANTED @ Oct 23rd 2007 5:25PM
those aren't ideas. those are "special effects".
GRANTED @ Oct 23rd 2007 5:27PM
and 2 posts down i see vegeta already made that comment. i am so original.
Freelance @ Oct 23rd 2007 3:41PM
Does anyone know if PS2 controllers will now use rumble when being played on PS3
mr nimblewick (SegaDF - Jogurt Ring) @ Oct 23rd 2007 4:12PM
They won't, but your SIXAXIS controllers will start rumbling now. They've had the hardware to the whole time, they just needed this firmware.
Cyro @ Oct 23rd 2007 3:56PM
Next-Gen Starts Now !!!
I can't wait to try-out Rumble for the first time! Its got to be awsome!
**Sony's Marketing team should just throw themself's off a cliff or something. I mean how many times can you screw up something.**
Kola @ Oct 23rd 2007 3:58PM
he got it from here.
http://www.usatoday.com/life/movies/dvd/2007-10-22-transformers-bay_N.htm
gone again.
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Oct 23rd 2007 4:00PM
arghhh!!! Really? He's signed back on??? GOD FUCKING DAMMIT!!! Well, there goes any hope of a good Transformers sequel.
Perfect example of Michael Bay's directing abilities.
From South Park:
"Those aren't ideas! Those are special effects!!!"
"I don't understand the difference."
DemonGSides @ Oct 23rd 2007 4:02PM
Wait... Is it just me, or does the PS3 get a TON of firmware updates?
I mean, the Xbox get 2 major ones a year, and is a pristine, working console.
The PS3 gets one ever month, and... well, you can't exactly say its a fine working machine.
Konny @ Oct 23rd 2007 4:08PM
lol, you fail.. Keep telling yourself that.. hey, question for you: which company put $1,150,000,000.00 into a warranty fund to cover RRoD issues?
bl13 @ Oct 23rd 2007 4:10PM
/facepalm
Vidikron (FU) @ Oct 23rd 2007 4:39PM
WTF are you talking about? The PS3 is rock solid. Sure, you can debate over the games and the price, but to claim it's not a "fine working machine" is absurd... especially when you're making that comparison against the 360.
GRANTED @ Oct 23rd 2007 5:28PM
i didn't think anyone would ever argue the 360 is a pristine working console by any stretch of the imagination.
robert @ Oct 23rd 2007 5:34PM
pristine, working console indeed...
as an owner of both, i haven't turned my PS3 off once in the past two weeks, when i'm not playing or if i'm playing the 360 i just let it do the folding@home.
there's no way i would leave my 360 running that long without worrying about it constantly.
DemonGSides @ Oct 23rd 2007 5:45PM
I meant the solidity of the software, obviously not the hardware.
DemonGSides @ Oct 23rd 2007 5:46PM
IN addendum: Which is blatantly obvious, since you know, firmware updates APPLY TO THE OPERATING SYSTEM.
Not the actual system. Fucking jump on the bandwagon boys, lets not even take a second to read the comment.
Dumbasses.
Vidikron (FU) @ Oct 23rd 2007 5:51PM
Umm... when you talk about firmware and say things like "fine working machine" people are going to assume you are talking about hardware. Seriously, how does the frequency of firmware updates have anything to do with the games available?
DemonGSides @ Oct 24th 2007 10:11AM
I never actually said it did. At all. Games were never mentioned in any of my posts.
The pure fact that it seems no one read or comprehends my post gives me very little faith in fellow gamers.
La li lu le lo @ Oct 23rd 2007 4:06PM
Wake me up when the PS3 comes with Dualshocks 3 that actually rumble in the box(regardless of how "So Last Gen" Sony says they are), IS back compat(so to swap PS2 for PS3), the price for the damn thing is 349.99 and has a decent library that the PS2 would be proud of. 'Till then:
Do (hybernation) {
("ENGAGE")
}
/End
La li lu le lo @ Oct 23rd 2007 4:20PM
OH!... and the friggin' Blue-Ray movies come on down in price from the clowds to around $15 or $20 per movie.
gonk @ Oct 23rd 2007 7:18PM
good ideas
too bad sony isn't logical
NATO_Duke @ Oct 23rd 2007 4:19PM
OMG, in that USA Today article he says he didn't get to put in the personal time like he did with Pearl Harbor.
Wow.
I need that DVD like Ben Affleck needs acting lessons! Oh actually, I dont need that DVD.
Hirsbrunner @ Oct 23rd 2007 4:31PM
Thanks def PD.
Allexz @ Oct 23rd 2007 6:24PM
So why the hell do you flame Sony?
They obviously thought the children (you) outgrew the crappy vibration feature. well you didnt, so now they make a "new" controller with old functions WHICH YOU REQUESTED, and now you flame them cause they listened to the customers. God, theres more retards than flies.
gonk @ Oct 23rd 2007 7:20PM
what happened to "the customer is always right"?
we're the ones with the money
Vidikron (FU) @ Oct 23rd 2007 4:37PM
I thought the TF movie was pretty good. Not outstanding, but entertaining anyway. Sure, it was cheesy in parts, but how many of you actually watched the 80's cartoon? Go back and watch it now, it's pretty horrible.
James @ Oct 23rd 2007 5:20PM
Break something then try to act like the second coming when they make it as good as everyone else, and their previous consoles. Odd.
Dan @ Oct 23rd 2007 5:21PM
It all makes sense now:
"Rumble is a last gen feature"
"The next generation doesn't start until we say it does"
"we now say that Rumble is next gen"
Anticrawl @ Oct 23rd 2007 5:41PM
