BAFTA: BioShock game of the year, Wii Sports wins most awards
The British Academy of Film and Television Arts announced the winners for their British Academy Video Game Awards and BioShock came out on top, with Wii Sports winning most categories. The full list can be found after break. Wii Sports won six of 13 awards, Crackdown won two awards, as did Okami.
Crackdown developer RealTime Worlds was the most successful European studio at the event, winning Best Action and Adventure and an audio award. Phil Wilson, producer of Crackdown, said, "BAFTA's are awards that are recognized and respected both outside the games industry and internationally, so we're incredibly proud that everyone's hard work has resulted in not just one but two of the prestigious gold masks." Great, now does that mean you'll finally start working on a sequel?

I believe that every category Wii Sports was nominated in, it won.
And Wii Sports remains the best waggling game on the wii. I'm anxious to see if Wii Fit can do nearly as well, critically speaking.
gonk @ Oct 24th 2007 11:00AM
bioshock should've gotten best sounds too, that's what made it so immersive
and bleh, i got sick of crackdown after an hour, good thing i didn't pay for it
mr nimblewick (SegaDF - Jogurt Ring) @ Oct 24th 2007 11:09AM
Let me guess, you paid for the Halo 3 beta?
gonk @ Oct 24th 2007 11:11AM
nah, i didn't even know it was in crackdown when my friend borrowed it from work. i didn't like halo until a couple months ago anyway (i still don't like the first, but the 2nd/3rd are good)
Word of the street(IDF-Digital Ruler). @ Oct 24th 2007 11:18AM
To be honest Crackdown isn't that bad but it has a lot of stuff dragging it down.
The music is trash.
The campaign is short.
No story whatsoever.
The minigames suck.
Hunting orbs is boring anyway you play it.
The DLC added a bit of fun but the Pro street racer stuff was tedious.
The game felt half-finished.
The DLC felt like if it only unlocked stuff that was already on the Disc.
But other than that the game is good.
Geist @ Oct 24th 2007 12:20PM
What I read:
"i didn't even know it was in crackdown when my friend 'borrowed'*winkwinknudgenudge* it from work"
Also, I agree, how does Crackdown get best use of audio? Half of the immersion in Bioshock was from the 50's-era music that was playing.
Word of the street(IDF-Digital Ruler). @ Oct 24th 2007 11:00AM
Other than Bioshock that list is so Wroong!
gonk @ Oct 24th 2007 11:04AM
nah, wiisports is the casual winner. and it has sports in its name, so of course it will win the sport category
Word of the street(IDF-Digital Ruler). @ Oct 24th 2007 11:13AM
Best Strategy and Simulation?
WTf?
Crono (NDF - Knight of the Old School) @ Oct 24th 2007 11:18AM
It wins for the "simulation" part of that, since Wii sports is all about simulating real sports.
Word of the street(IDF-Digital Ruler). @ Oct 24th 2007 11:23AM
I wonder how the strategy fits in.
Seriously what Forza 2 never existed for them?
xXFenixKnight13Xx @ Oct 24th 2007 11:30AM
Yup this list is way off except for Bioshock
xXFenixKnight13Xx @ Oct 24th 2007 11:34AM
God of War 2 for best tech achievement? Yeah right, Gears was in that category and it didnt win. This just proves that BAFTA=FAIL
billychaos @ Oct 24th 2007 11:06AM
I find it funny that the winners are Bioshock and Wiisports yet the image is only Bioshock.
...I dont know why I even bother coming to this site.
Ally @ Oct 24th 2007 11:11AM
Perhaps because BioShock won Game of the Year?
mr nimblewick (SegaDF - Jogurt Ring) @ Oct 24th 2007 11:11AM
Well, best overall game is an important award.
I would have thought that six wins in other categories would have helped wiisports win the best overall, but whatever. Bioshock's a good game.
NATO_Duke @ Oct 24th 2007 11:11AM
Oh calm yourself. Bioshock got best game.
If you need every story to be about Nintendo and Nintendo only, then hell, http://www.nintendowiifanboy.com/ there ya go.
Skedaddle now.
gonk @ Oct 24th 2007 11:12AM
bioshock got "best game"
and they only post 1 image at the top of a post
wtf dude, don't get ur panties in a twist
mr nimblewick (SegaDF - Jogurt Ring) @ Oct 24th 2007 11:14AM
Still, they could have done some kind of funny Mii in a Big Daddy outfit photoshop. They just didn't try.
Sean @ Oct 24th 2007 11:46AM
You're stretching the whole "Joystiq is biased" angle a little too thin, my boy.
Count Noobula @ Oct 24th 2007 11:07AM
Best action and adventure should have gone to Zelda TP. And Bioshock should have gotten best audio.
NATO_Duke @ Oct 24th 2007 11:13AM
Wow. I take it you only played Zelda then.
Bioshock had a lock in comparison.
Evan @ Oct 24th 2007 11:19AM
@NATO_Duke
Read before you comment. He said Zelda should have taken an award away from Crackdown. No comparison was made between Bioshock and Zelda.
NATO_Duke @ Oct 24th 2007 11:42AM
Oh I misread - calm down man. I don't recall you being my teacher.
Evan @ Oct 24th 2007 11:09AM
High definition graphics are highly overrated... "Best technical achievement", "Best artistic achievement", "Best story and character" all went to standard definition PS2 games!
Slaziman @ Oct 24th 2007 11:18AM
How does best story and character going to PS2 show that high definition graphics are overrated?
And yes, for being on the PS2, God of War II is a very pretty game and thus a technical achievement, that doesn't mean high definition graphics are overrated at all.
James @ Oct 24th 2007 12:56PM
Coupled with the terrible monthly sales (compared to last gen) and the sky rocketting Wii.
Next gen has lost.
What are these systems trying to offer that my PC can't?
Justin B @ Oct 24th 2007 11:16AM
I find it really disgusting that Bioshock has been lauded so much.
The combat in Bioshock is pretty boring, even with all the Plasmids at your disposal. The enemy movement is so ridiculously erratic that the guns are entirely useless. Even if you can manage to hit things, by the end of the game it takes every pistol round you can carry unloaded into the head of a splicer to take it down. Why even bother, when your wrench instant-kills everything? And please.. please don't tell me I'm playing the game too good and that I should play dumber to make it harder. I am so sick of seeing that argument.
Sure, the characters are sort of interesting. A stereotypical angry Irishman and an evil white business owner. Oh wait, that isn't interesting, it is cliche. Even if you take into account the wealth of background information gleaned from the collecting all the recordings as I did, it doesn't really add anything to the story, it just makes it painfully obvious what was coming. If you pick up each recording you will know the major plot twist long before it happens.
By now we all know that the "moral" choice the game presents is no choice at all. Hm, do I want generic three second ending number one, or generic three second ending number two?
As for immersion, how could anyone be immersed by so much steam punk bullshit. Did you like Wild Wild West? Because if you did, you'll love Bioshock! The whole concept of plasmids being genetic is entirely lame. It is magic. End of story.
Sound? I had some sound hitches and weird loop problems, not to mention sounds playing at massively inappropriate volume levels totally disproportionate to distance. I don't have a dedicated sound card, but that still reeks of bullshit.
Slaziman @ Oct 24th 2007 11:20AM
I agree with these sentiments, but Bioshock was still a great game regardless. What it wasn't, was the "essential gaming experience" IGN said it was.
Crono (NDF - Knight of the Old School) @ Oct 24th 2007 11:21AM
your only point is plasmids = magic, because they didn't discover DNA until 1962.
gonk @ Oct 24th 2007 11:22AM
at the end of the game, you're supposed to use antipersonel rounds in pistol/MG against splicers, not regular bullets
and did you do your research? that helps
jeez, it sounds like you didn't want to like the game
Justin B @ Oct 24th 2007 11:26AM
I had every weapon upgrade and all research. When I said every bullet I was referring to all anti-personnel rounds, all regular rounds, and as long as the gun is out, might as well blow through the armor piercing rounds too. There was never a time when I did not have nearly full ammo.
I just remembered how annoying the female splicers were, complaining about their cheating husbands in a shrill, bitchy voice. Every single one I encountered had the exact same lines and would shout them across the entire level. *Shudders*
gonk @ Oct 24th 2007 11:29AM
i guess the sound wasn't glitchy on xbox :) worked great for me
i loved trying to walk around as slow as possible (to be quiet) and just listening to the people/things around me
NATO_Duke @ Oct 24th 2007 11:56AM
"And please.. please don't tell me I'm playing the game too good and that I should play dumber to make it harder. I am so sick of seeing that argument."
You hear that a lot? I can't even understand that argument. You should play dumber to make it harder...what? That makes no sense to me.
Anyway, I think you were misusing the weapon types, and not try the different kinds out enough. I didn't have the problems you did and found the game to be quite fun. Also, the movement on them was pretty cool - I don't think all enemies should be so stupid that they just stand and wait for shots to hit them.
CaptainAmericaX @ Oct 24th 2007 12:06PM
Sounds like a hater to me...
BioShock deserved GOTY. It was an immersive experience and I loved playing every second of it. Just as good as Zelda except in a totally different and best of all NEW way.
CONGRATS BIOSHOCK!
Jake @ Oct 24th 2007 1:53PM
The pistol was the only worthless weapon later in the game. You talk like it was every gun, then just talk about the only worthless one. Kinda sounds trolly. And the wrench is only that powerful if you equip the combat plasmids for it. You could equip plasmids for other things and have about just as strong of a character. It is all in how you want to play the game.
Why are we picking GOTY when there are still 3 top notch candidates coming? That is stupid. Crackdown best audio = fail. God of War tech achievement = fail. This list in general kind of stinks.
a ham sandwich @ Oct 24th 2007 11:16AM
i assume halo 3 wasnt considered. i dunno bout game of the year, but it def wins best audio.
megaStryke @ Oct 24th 2007 11:24AM
I'm pretty sure there was a date cutoff.
billychaos @ Oct 24th 2007 11:22AM
I'm glad to see Crackdown won some awards. I was afraid that game would be underrated. That's my favorite xbox 360 exclusive title. Hopefully this will make them consider a sequal.
WiNG @ Oct 24th 2007 11:27AM
I don't get it.
Didn't Wii sports come out in 2006, with the Wii November launch?
How can any game that isn't Team Fortress 2 win best multiplayer?
How about Best Fuckin Ending Ever: Portal ?
Kevin @ Oct 24th 2007 12:08PM
I would take from that that the "year" they are refering to is not January 1st, 2007 to December 31st, 2007. Especially considering that the year is not over yet.
It was probably September 1st, 2006 to August 31st, 2007 or some such.
Iceman346 @ Oct 24th 2007 11:29AM
While I wholeheartedly agree about Bioshock being the best game of the year some of the categories that Wii Sports won are just laughable. I can understand "Best Casual" and perhaps "Best Multiplayer" but the rest is just plain wrong.
samfish (MSDF- Nurse Outfit!) @ Oct 24th 2007 11:29AM
Crackdown over Zelda? That's just wrong wrong wrong.
...but at least Okami got Best Artistic achievement.
I still don't think Wii Sports should've won Strategy & Simulation on principal, too.
Shagittarius @ Oct 24th 2007 11:33AM
Action and Adventure: Crackdown (WRONG, God of War 2)
Strategy and Simulation: Wii Sports (WRONG, Company of Heroes)
Sports: Wii Sports
Multiplayer: Wii Sports (LOLERSKATES! Many better than this take your pick)
Casual and Social: Wii Sports
Use of Audio: Crackdown (Bioshock, or GHII)
Original Score: Okami (Bioshock)
Technical Achievement: God of War II (Bioshock)
Artistic Achievement: Okami (Bioshock)
Gameplay: Wii Sports (Dont make me ROFLMAOBBQ)
Innovation: Wii Sports
Story and Character: God of War II (Bioshock)
Game: Bioshock
The Gamers' Award: Football Manager 2007 (PC) (Blimey Limies)
BAFTA's "Ones to Watch": Ragnarawk (Whatever)
Tetsuo @ Oct 24th 2007 3:01PM
Roflmao? Someone is obviously a little obsessed with Bioshock.
Babel @ Oct 25th 2007 6:06AM
I agree that there is no way Wii Sports should win Best Gameplay. I mean, it sounds like the judges had a few too many drunken games of Wii Tennis the night before choosing the winners - from that list, you'd think Wii Sports was a pinnacle of gaming achievement. It's just a bit of innovative fun...
daniel @ Oct 24th 2007 11:33AM
for some reason ratchet and clank tools of destruction had a few nominations, how exactly can an unreleased game be included
harrison_schaerr @ Oct 24th 2007 11:34AM
how god of war 2 beat bioshock in the story category is beyond me.
how crackdown beat anything is beyond me.
how a ps2 game beat a 360 title for the technical achievement award just makes me want to vomit.
how wii sports won in strategy and simulation is... disgusting..
a casual game category? honestly, who comes up with these awards?
xXFenixKnight13Xx @ Oct 24th 2007 11:38AM
This is the offical category. Tell me how GOW2 beat GoW or even Drakes Fortune??
Technical achievement
Winner: God of War 2 (SCE Santa Monica Studio)
Runner-ups
Crackdown (Realtime Worlds)
Gears of War Epic Games)
MotorStorm (SCE External Development Studio/Evolution)
Okami (Clover(Capcom))
Uncharted: Drake's Fortune (Naughty Dog)
samfish (MSDF- Nurse Outfit!) @ Oct 24th 2007 11:47AM
God of War 2 won, deservedly so, because what it did on the PS2 is nothing short of amazing.
Best Technical Achievement isn't about what game looks the prettiest. It's about getting the hardware to do things people would never they'd see on it.
Gears of War and Uncharted are simply setting new graphical highmarks. GoW2 is in all probability the pinnacle of PS2 development and therefore deserves the win.
