King Dedede joins the Smash Bros Brawl cast

King Dedede is an addition to the "heavyweight" ranks of Brawl, joining Donkey Kong and Bowser as a slow, but powerful character. He sports a brutal hammer, a big belly, and -- we're crossing our fingers -- hopefully the ability to echo Kirby's most famous move by inhaling and shooting out his enemies, in a manner reminiscent of his boss battles.
This brings the number of Kirby characters in Nintendo's fighter up from a meager one in Melee to an impressive three. Could other lonely franchise characters be receiving the same treatment?

a zebes level with energy sucking metroids floating around that can be kicked around at your opponents

I can see ridly being an assist trophie, but he's far too big to be a playable characher. I reckon the most likely metroid characters other than samus would be a hunter from the ds game or corruption, dark samus (phazon moves FTW) or generic space pirate #44.
A metroid would be good for an assist trophie too.

Actually, I doubt dark samus (or dark anything, other than dark TW Link) will be a normal playable character, simply because of lack of gameplay differences. And why does everyone say Ripley is so overwhelmingly huge? Original Ripley (aka not the cyborg ones in MP series) wasn't that large..

Simple, First off all you'll need a nice large pineapple. I mean a ripe one. Then you'll need a unicycle. First, eat the pineapple, they go well with a number of things, some people like cottage cheese. Next, wonder why the fuck you took my advice and bought a unicycle.
Doing this will do one thing, make the PS3 have a built in toaster. Thus increasing its sales. Everyone enjoys toast with a spot of jam. Though then the 350 and wii will come out with there own toast brand console. Now see the thing is that everyone loves toast, so having multiple toasters will let everyone have their own style of toast. You enjoy toast, right? Do you also talk to people claiming your toast is better then their toast? No, you dont. So dont do it with videogames. Let every man, woman and eskimo enjoy their choice of videogames.
The moral of this story is I need to freaking get to sleep earlier and stop waiting for the Brawl updates.

As awesome as that was, Nailio, I think you mistook "anti-spoiler-ism" for "fanboy-ism". He said he'd like some of this to be a surprise implying that he:
1) Owns a Wii
2) Intends to purchase this game
3) Intends to play this game

Yeah, it's easy enough to resist the temptation of visiting the Smahbros blog every day (well, semi-easy). But lately it seems every single gaming blog = the smashbros blog. So then it becomes sorta harder to avoid knowing the game inside out before I play it.

Admittedly as a non-Zelda fan, the introduction of Ganondorf(OOT) and Ganon(TP) were the only reasons I had to play either of them.
As for King Dedede(ugh... you know this means we'll have some dumbass Carlos Mencia jokes); I have to wonder how he'll play any different than the IceClimbers' main attacks.

I'm guessing that Dedede will play like a big, heavy Kirby... He can fly, inhale enemies, and uses a hammer... but he's 3 times bigger than Kirby. He should be pretty different from the Ice Climbers.

I just had another thought. A lot of these announced characters I thought might be SECRET UNLOCKABLE CHARACTERS.
So... what will the secret unlockable characters be then? Knuckles? Tails? Megaman? Leon from RE:4? I mean what can they pull for secret characters that will blow our minds now that everyone and their mom are already announced for SSBB?

Mario Series:
1) Magikoopa
2) Shy Guys
3-x) Paper Mario Characters
Zelda Series:
1) Tingle (you know you want him)
2) Skull Kid
3) Goron (Would name biggaron, but that's obviously too large)
4) WW Link. Substancially different from TW link, and technically a different person too.
5) TW Link: Wolf form. (More of hoping there's be a method to switch from TW Link human to TW Link wolf, like Samus hunter to Samus zero.)
Metroid Series:
1-5) All 5 other bounty hunters in Metroid Prime Hunters.
6) Ripley, assuming it's not a main character.
Other Series:
(Mario, Kirby) Rats, I presume the one in SMB 2 and Squeek Squak are similar enough.
Asset Trophies that needs to be done:
1) The Sun (SMB 3)
2) Laikatu
3) TW Darkness (All characters take on their darkness forms)
5) Professor Kawashima
6) Metal Gear (Yes, I know Metal Gears appear in Snake's stage.)
7) Weighted Companion Cube (I can dream, right?)

I'm a little dissapointed in this character update. Why Dedede? There are too many characters wielding wooden hammers now...what can make up for this, is if they add Viewtiful Joe ;)
As for Ridley, I don't understand why so many people think he'd be a character. He's too big, doesn't have any distinctive moves attacks, and carries none of the humanistic qualities or distinguishable facial features that the characters have had in past games. I just don't think it'll happen. He'd be a good AT or Boss, but not a player.

For the size thing, as I said, it'd be just like Bowser, and that one is there since melee. about the humanistic qualities, I can still say: look at Bowser, but also add Yoshi and now Ivysaur, too.
And for the attacks: B= the weird beam he shoots from his mouth. B-Side= a dash like that in the meta ridley fight (metroid prime 1). B-Up= maybe something with his wing, like the dash but going upwards, attacking from below with his beak. B-Down= maybe an attack with his tallons, it could be similar to Cap. Falcon's "falcon kick".
Ridley'd be a great addition, adding one more heavyweight but maybe quicker than the rest of them.

As opposed to Kirby, who technically has one "distinctive move", which is coincidently shared with King Dedede. Or Mario, who's moves were mostly made just for SSB series. (items like fireflower don't count cause they're actual SSB items)
a) Ripley didn't use to be that overwhelmingly large, don't use the MP games for comparison, since those were ressurected and cybernetically upgraded versions.
b) Humanistic qualities is NOT an issue. Unique characters are NOT an issue (see: twin-controlled ice climbers, insta-swap pokemon trainer characters). the only real limitation I see now is pure size.

1) Size
Okay, somehow in Smash Bros., Kirby and Pikachu are about the same size as Mario. According to the Pokédex, Pikachu is 1'4". And according to his Smash Bros. profile, Kirby is 8" tall.
In other words, canonical sizes are irrelevant in Smash Bros., since they aren't the actual characters, but figures of them (plushes, trophies, etc.).
2) Abilities
That sure didn't stop Fox and Captain Falcon from joining the fight.

I love Ridley as a Metroid boss, but I do think he'd be rather clumsy as a character in Smash Bros... I mean seriously, he's like at least 3 times the size of Samus in most Metroid games. I think he's an awesome candidate for an Assist Trophy, but full-blown character? I don't think so... maybe a Space Pirate would be better?

Didn't anyone play Corruption? There's 3 other bounty hunters, with different powers. Of course, you couldn't have one without the other two... so maybe they're assist trophies.
And how come Ridley always comes back, but not the other guy who's name escapes me at 7 am. (although I believe he did come back once... or I'm thinking of the remake)

You're thinking of Kraid I believe. He made an appearance in Melee though, in the background of the Brinstar Depths stage. I think he'd be an awesome assist trophy though, I've always thought he was a cool character.
