Smash Bros Brawl gets replay sharing
In addition to unveiling new challenger King Dedede, this week's Smash Bros. Brawl update also showed the revised Target Smash mode. Hidden within that post, however, is a much more impressive feature announcement: replay sharing.
"This time, you can view replays," read the post. "What this means is, the game records what you did in brawls or in Target Smash and lets you review it." You can record around three minutes. Also revealed is the ability to share replay data with your Wii friends, though all allusions to sharing replays specifically reference Target Smash so we're not sure if sharing brawl-related replay sharing will be an option.
We'd love to see leaderboards for downloading the best Target Smash replays, akin to Gran Turismo HD Concept, as well as some way to turn the replay data into video we can email and post online. We're hoping more replay-related features are revealed between now and the game's February launch.

"What this means is, the game records what you did in BRAWLS or in Target Smash". How did you miss it?
ColossalHat @ Oct 25th 2007 1:38PM
I think they may be talking about sharing brawl replays, as it doesn't specifically state that you can share them. Though I think it's probably a given since there's no real difference between the two modes.
Word of the street(IDF-Digital Ruler). @ Oct 25th 2007 1:40PM
OMG Nintendo rip-off Halo 3! J/K
Neat,I guess.
Count Noobula @ Oct 25th 2007 1:40PM
Cool. Now people can watch me own them over and over again.
baby sea tuna @ Oct 25th 2007 1:41PM
Loverly. Nintendo is trying really hard to get me not to sell my Wii...and SUCCEEDING!
Now where's my onslaught of good news about Mario Kart (AKA: the OTHER Nintendo game I give half a shit about?)
FOXHOUND @ Oct 25th 2007 2:02PM
Yes, Nintendo. I am also anxiously awaiting news of said title. :d I'm already going to pick it up, but coercion into trudging into GameStop to put a reserve on it ahead of time would be peachy keen.
BTW... has it been confirmed that the arcade circuit tracks will be included in the game? And if you could upload either your Mii or a JPEG-format picture off the SD card as an avatar?
Noshino @ Oct 25th 2007 2:35PM
Please let it be Mario Kart Double Dash!
Mario Kart for DS was boring and the same as the N64 version IMHO, now Mario Kart DD, that was insanely fun, a school-skipping reason back in hs, and it would be a work-skipping reason....
3cubed minus 3squared plus1 @ Oct 25th 2007 3:16PM
I loved MKDD too. It was fresh and I liked how they all had their own special item.
KVN @ Oct 25th 2007 1:46PM
Cool now all we need is mic support and this game would be perfect.
CaptainAmericaX @ Oct 25th 2007 2:03PM
Lol I love my Wii and all but thats never gonna happen.
Maybe next gen...
I've already accepted the fact that online with the Wii won't be as fun as with my 360. Good thing I've got plenty of family and friends in the local area to invite over.
James @ Oct 25th 2007 3:46PM
Dear god no.
TF2 is full of, and no offence, but Americans repeating the same words over. As if they're just bots fed on South Park.
Keep voice chat away.
BenKenobi88 @ Oct 25th 2007 4:53PM
Yeah...that's probably me in TF2. Iiiimaaaginaaatioon! So sue me, it's funny.
Lemmiwinks @ Oct 25th 2007 4:54PM
Don't you dare threaten Smash Bros. with voice chat!
Martin @ Oct 25th 2007 1:48PM
I think Nintendo is finally getting the fact that Brawl needs to have great community support. You can say what you like about Halo 3, but both the fileshare and Forge features are amazingly well done.
I"m starting to look forward to this game. Hopefully it will have a robust matchmaking system.
exit stencil @ Oct 25th 2007 6:29PM
Amen. If they can come up with a great matchmaking system and a way to add friends easily in game, this could be a system seller for sure.
This is coming from a guy who has played but hasn't liked much of anything on the Wii thus far.
Leo-Jay @ Oct 25th 2007 1:52PM
And if there's anything -really- big in this article, it's that we finally have a game that's aware of your Wii Friends List, which bodes extremely well for the online multiplayer elements.
OM @ Oct 25th 2007 2:30PM
That's been around since Elebits at launch. Nintendo just chose not to use that feature.
Sean @ Oct 25th 2007 1:55PM
How will this work as far as memory on your Wii? I'm guessing you'll need an SD card?
mr nimblewick (SegaDF - Jogurt Ring) @ Oct 25th 2007 2:31PM
I'm sure it doesn't save the replays in a movie format. It'll just use to game engine to recreate the events.
qbix @ Oct 25th 2007 1:55PM
Taking clues from Halo 3, I see. Well, I'm not going to buy this game even though I actually own a Wii (not been touched for 11 months), but I'm glad developers are following successful features from Halo. At least this way the fanboys will stop bashing Bungie's phenomenal work.
megaStryke @ Oct 25th 2007 2:05PM
I highly doubt that this is something that was just chucked in just because Halo did it.
Oh, and you complain that you haven't touched the Wii in 11 months yet you aren't going to buy what is most likely to be the best-selling title for the platform? And you complain about not touching the machine? Excuse me here?
arrrgh @ Oct 25th 2007 2:08PM
or Skate maybe? the world didnt begin at halo3
replay sharing has been on PC's for ever
AstroZombie @ Oct 25th 2007 2:09PM
Oh, for Christ's sake. Thanks for popping by, you can go back to sucking Bill Gates' cock now.
megaStryke @ Oct 25th 2007 2:11PM
I think I remember playing NHL Hockey on the Genesis and being able to watch instant replays.
qbix @ Oct 25th 2007 2:33PM
Well, that's debatable because I think Galaxy will be the best selling title, but who knows. I just never got into the other Smash Bros, and that's not saying it isn't a good game, because it obviously is. It's just not the kind of game for me. Mario Galaxy, on the other hand, I'm picking up on day one.
As for the replays feature, I'm sure they might have contemplated it. After all, Smash Bros replays would be very easy to do in comparison to Halo's saved films. However, I think it would be naive to think Nintendo didn't look at the popularity and excellent implementation of this feature in Halo as a deciding factor to not only implement replays but allow them to be shared.
Admiral_Mike @ Oct 25th 2007 2:36PM
I have to say, your icon is awesome!
Very niiiiice
qbix @ Oct 25th 2007 2:52PM
Yeah, replays have been on PCs for years, but in consoles this hasn't been done, at least not at this level. I also have been able to WATCH replays in FIFA games for a long time, not to mention the many racing games that save replays automatically. The amount of information needed to record a few seconds of gameplay on a sports game, isn't all that complicated. However, try recording the actions of 16 individual players in an FPS for 20 minutes, allowing the user to move the camera around, save screenshots, and upload these replays to a server where his friends can download the film either in-game or via a website (Bungie.net). Who has done this in the past on a console? or who has implemented this feature so well on a PC? Please rid me of my ignorance. A better question would be, Have you even played with these features in Halo 3?
WiNG @ Oct 25th 2007 3:16PM
Actually Street Fighter 3 on the Dreamcast had this, and I'm sure other games before did as well.
James @ Oct 25th 2007 3:50PM
Wow, a slew of games have had this feature since before Halo 3...
I had a public domain Shmup on my Amiga that had such a feature, and a friend was making a similar game with a replay feature. I suppose Bungie just copied them.
megaStryke @ Oct 25th 2007 3:53PM
Nintendo is a pretty shut-in company. They typically come up with their shit on their own. I believe Shigeru Miyamoto once said something along the lines of his not playing other companies games too much because he doesn't want to be directly influenced by them. If Nintendo was the kind of company to obviously implement others' methods, they would have had an online system that actually works... like... six years ago.
exit stencil @ Oct 25th 2007 6:31PM
To be fair, yes games had replay features before.
... but online sharing of said replays?
The feature in Halo 3 is very, very well executed too.
Bash Halo all you like, they did what they set out to do very well.
bm @ Oct 25th 2007 7:14PM
"lol yeah I havent touched my wii in many many years! gathering dustz!!!1"
"meh I'm not gonna buy this awesome game for it tho or that one or that one, wii sucks! no games! lol"
le sigh
Skeffington @ Oct 25th 2007 2:04PM
Oh man. As much as I like Smash Bros, I suck at it. I can already imagine my repeatedly humiliating defeats being exposed to the rest of the world!
Ah well, I knew I should have spent more time practicing my joypad skills when I was younger instead of doing my homework.
I blame my parents.
arrrgh @ Oct 25th 2007 2:10PM
but team battles will be teh shizzzz
Kassu @ Oct 25th 2007 2:22PM
Please add a way to post them online, please add a way to post them online, please add a way to post them online...
Before, i really didn't feel like buying Brawl, but after the news that started arriving after the delay...Man, this is going to be wack..
WiNG @ Oct 25th 2007 3:22PM
You will not be able to post them online. Just like in Halo, Street Fighter 3, Gran Turismo... the data being stored is just the inputs of the players. What you see is the game engine playing back those same inputs. It is not a "movie" per se.
Mr Khan @ Oct 25th 2007 4:46PM
And that's how they'll be able to save it, No way Wii has save space for FMV, even in 640*480, but just a bunch of button presses and analogue trackings...
Pureshooter @ Oct 25th 2007 2:23PM
Clearly inspired by the Ratchet & Clank series...
megaStryke @ Oct 25th 2007 2:28PM
Clearly.
Quaddw @ Oct 25th 2007 2:32PM
Why is everyone relating this too Halo 3 as if it invented game replays o.0 its been done way before lol even Starcraft had them.
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Oct 25th 2007 2:59PM
Because maybe it's the most recent game that has replay sharing?
Slaziman @ Oct 25th 2007 2:44PM
I see people are drawing comparisons to Halo 3, and I must admit it crossed my mind too.
HOWEVER, it is extremely likely that it will be restricted to people you've shared your friend codes with. And although Brawl is really a lot of fun to play, I don't really see myself watching movies of other people playing it, as there are no "WOW did you see what I just did there?!" moments (unless one of the guys playing is seriously 1337)
In conclusion, this is definitely not as practical as Halo 3's Saved Films, or as fitting. It's still a great feature to have nonetheless, and a step in the right direction. Good news.
Slaziman @ Oct 25th 2007 2:48PM
Oops, with "Brawl is a lot of fun to play" I meant Super Smash Brothers in general... obviously I can't know yet if Brawl is fun to play :P
Clay @ Oct 25th 2007 4:44PM
There seems to be this conception out there that smash bros. is not a deep game, that it is more casual or something.
There have been so many "wow did you see what I/he/she just did, that's awesome/hilarious/rediculous" moments for me, especially playing at tournaments where the competition really heats up. (Not professional tournaments mind you, but people are pretty good.) I love this feature, but I agree there needs to be a way to post them online. Doubt it will happen though.
Duscrom @ Oct 25th 2007 3:33PM
Ahhhhh, So THAT'S the reason for the SSBB Delay... To steal Halo 3's ideas... Cause that's Nintendo.. If you can't Innovate, Imitate, and then add pokemon and mario and call it innovation.. I mean who's gonna argue with them.. Nobody! That's Who!
WiNG @ Oct 25th 2007 3:34PM
It's pretty much the consensus that "replays" have been around since at least Playstation 1. So please go back to living under the troll bridge.
wii360fangirl @ Oct 25th 2007 4:01PM
so its like the theatre for halo 3?
DBuck_Eye @ Oct 25th 2007 4:11PM
This game just keeps sounding more and more like Halo 3 every day.
Mr Khan @ Oct 25th 2007 4:49PM
It's an insanely easy argument to break down, since absolutely none of these features originated in Halo 3, nor were they even exactly popularized by Halo 3
Lemmiwinks @ Oct 25th 2007 4:59PM
Are you high?
