Is that two month old PAX07 t-shirt started to look slightly worn or wrinkled? (If so, may we recommend occasionally wearing other clothing.) Save the date and start booking your flight for Seattle, as the dates for the 5th annual Penny Arcade Expo have been unveiled: August 29 through 31, 2008.
This year's event drew in approximately 37,000 attendees into the Washington State Convention and Trade Center. According to the press release (PDF file), "attendance for the 2008 event is expected to reach forty-seven million bajillion people." A venue for the 2008 expo was not specified; exhibitor packets are now available and attendee registration opens in January.
Okay, folks, you can now officially start placing your bets on what will be next year's Omegathon.

I've gone to PAX every year since its inception, and it's always a blast. It's a thoroughly exhausting affair but so much fun, and so informative (if you like attending panels.)
And seriously, I met Ron Gilbert of Monkey Island fame. Totally worth going to Seattle for a weekend.

Dammit, it's my first week of school again. I hope I can weasel my way up there this year. I've got some serious nerding off to do, and it's been swelling up inside for a while.

Why do people think it's cool to wear shirts that say "otaku" on them? That's like going around with a shirt that says "VIRGIN!" on it. I mean if you're happy not getting laid it's none of my business, but I tend not to walk around advertising my shortcomings.

Wearing such an article of clothing to a video game convention (or various other convention) wouldn't dent one's reputation as much as you think, considering you're surrounded by people dressed as anime characters and cat-people. As far as wearing it outside of aforementioned events, well, I don't know what they're thinking.

I talked to a Japanese friend about this, and it seems the word otaku was very derogatory in Japan for a while, but stupid Americans took it as a cool word to show off your extreme nerdiness in a way. I had to know exactly what she meant because when I first met her in Kyoto she told me I was a "Nintendo otaku" and a "David Bowie otaku." But then she told me that otaku are becoming more socially accepted in Japan right now, so it wasn't meant as an insult, similar to how nerds have been slightly more accepted in America over the last few years.
But 100% of otaku in Japan are definitely virgins. Have you seen the "air sex" video on YouTube?

They pantomime sex acts, and you can tell they have no idea what they're doing. They seriously consider it practice too. It's hilarious. I've also been to an internet cafe in Akihabara (otaku capital of the world), and it was nuts. You get internet access, there's a gigantic manga library, anime DVDs, PS2s, and then a giant porn collection and you get a little curtain to hide you in your booth while you handle your business. Free slurpees too. Nerd heaven for 400 or 500 yen an hour.

Agreed. The term Otaku was popularized through a serial murderer who lived out fantasies portrayed in manga by killed little girls and raping and eating their corpses.

It's certainly not something I would wear on a shirt!

Wow thanks Evan. That article ruined my life. I think I'm gonna throw up now.
Or eat a burrito. But still... ugh.

You make being a virgin sound like you have leprosy or are an insensitive prick or klepto or something. Some people just have social anxiety problems or have no experience with relationships. It is often not their fault. Please don't use virginity as an example of an shortcoming. And that's not even counting the people who choose to be one.

Reading the Wiki, I've to applaud the news reports dropping all anime links after they turned out to be false, and get over the whole thing. Wonder when we'll be able to do the same with video games.

I definitely want to try and attend next year. It seems like a blast. The only convention I've been to is this past Gen-con, which was a great time.

Next year's omegathon is.....
two lucky people out of the audience get to try and beat up Marcus Fenix after the surprise announcement of GoW 2 at the event and a playable demo.
You first heard the news from me.

Whoa. This is the same weekend as next year's E4All Expo. This is not good news for E4All as there's no way the companies are going to split themselves between two expos at once.

I've been to every PAX so far (I live in the Seattle area) and I'm definitely planning to attend the next one as well. I just hope at some point I can manage to go for more than a few hours. Mostly I just need to make sure nobody decides to get married that day (which has happened twice now...)

I have set a goal to go to PAX next year.
It'll probably cost me at least a grand to make the trip, given that I live in NYC.
But fuck it, it's a pilgrimage that must be made.
