Build your own stages in Smash Bros. Brawl

Did you hear that sound? If we're not mistaken (and we only occasionally are), that was the sound of millions of fanboy heads exploding as they learned that Super Smash Bros. Brawl includes a level editor. It looks fairly flexible too, allowing you to place objects and choose their size, look, etc. You can even select your own music.
One-upping itself once again, SSBB is going to let you share those custom maps, and your friends won't be the only ones seeing your work (though that is an option). You can also send your maps to Nintendo, who will then select one map daily to send out to all players. That's right: You'll not only have a chance at map stardom, you'll be receiving a daily infusion of new content.
Be honest with us: Would a valentine to Nintendo be too creepy?

How much can they fit on those disks? They've got to be bursting at the seems by now
mr nimblewick (SegaDF - Jogurt Ring) @ Oct 29th 2007 11:08AM
He also confirmed that you can use SD cards for it. Hopefully this is a new trend for nintendo.
Skippy @ Oct 29th 2007 12:49PM
ExciteTruck can play MP3 songs directly off an SD card, and that was a launch game.
ukickmydog (NDF - Earth) @ Oct 29th 2007 7:36PM
English must make your head burst at the "seems"
icicle0424 @ Oct 29th 2007 11:03AM
the update also confirms that you'll need to exchange wii friend codes and smash bros friend codes (or did we already know that? I didn't).... that's like 30 digits now, right?
but hey! level editor! the intarnets asplode!
AstroZombie @ Oct 29th 2007 11:20AM
I think you're jumping to conclusions. The post doesn't say anything about an additional code for "Smash friends." I think it's more likely that registered friends will carry over from your Wii to the game, and then you'll have to choose whether or not to add someone to your in-game list, once it's confirmed that they have SSBB.
Skippy @ Oct 29th 2007 12:49PM
Yeah, sort of like exchanging Friend Tokens in Metroid Prime 3. It just used your regular Wii address book.
icicle0424 @ Oct 29th 2007 1:24PM
"Also, if you’ve finished *registering* someone as *both* a Wii Friend and a Smash friend, you’ll be able to send custom stages to each other."
I hope I'm wrong, not that it'll be too much of a hassle...
pixelator @ Oct 29th 2007 3:34PM
Exactly. Friend Codes are strictly FTL.
As is Joystiq's ongoing passionate love affair with anything Nintendo, complete with blinders.
AstroZombie @ Oct 29th 2007 3:47PM
Yeah, thanks. I read the post. *Registering* does not necessarily denote entering a *code*.
gir @ Oct 29th 2007 11:03AM
This is the last game I'll ever play!!!
Rubang B (NDF - Heart) @ Oct 29th 2007 1:27PM
That's exactly what I said. Game of the Forever confirmed. Sorry StarCraft 2.
Noshino @ Oct 29th 2007 5:57PM
Im still playing SC....
Shiro @ Oct 30th 2007 4:51AM
I agree with Rubang. I don't know if my interest in StarCraft 2 can hold at this point. I still (actually, only recently STARTED) play(ing) StarCraft Brood War, and love it, but holy crap, Batman... Brawl can do NO WRONG. I got giddy when the Sonic Adventure Battle theme played on Sonic's intro video, and I cried with joy over DK's video, because it reminded me of the good old days of DK, not the bongo shit (though still admittedly kinda fun).
Now, I have this. One February 3, my life will be complete.
When I get tired of Smash Bros Brawl, I will feel content, and my life can end, Heaven or Hell awaiting.
OvenMittNinja @ Oct 29th 2007 11:05AM
Holy Crap. Awesome. It's like Halo 3 in Nintendo form.
Ten Dolla Bill @ Oct 29th 2007 11:19AM
Except not at all.
samfish (MSDF- Nurse Outfit!) @ Oct 29th 2007 12:15PM
Except a thousand times better.
Geist @ Oct 29th 2007 12:24PM
Except not like Halo 3's pussy Forge editor at all.
Seroth @ Oct 29th 2007 12:35PM
Kinda. Halo 3 kicks SSBB ass as far as recording films (only 3 mintues for SSBB? LAME).
But SSBB's level editor looks like it's gonna kick the tar out of the disappointment that was Forge.
Crono (NDF - Knight of the Old School) @ Oct 29th 2007 1:11PM
Seroth, most matches only last 2 minutes. So a 3 minute video is sufficient for 90% of smash brothers matches.
rTwelve @ Oct 29th 2007 1:36PM
Halo 3 and Super Smash Bros Brawl. Part of a balanced gamer breakfast.
It was nice knowing you, college education.
rv @ Oct 29th 2007 2:16PM
Yes, it looks like it will be hella sweet.
And everyone please stop hating on the forge. Just go to bungie's site and see some of the crazy stuff people have created (rocket race, organ trail, spikeball). Some of these completely change the game so that killing isn't the point or an option. The forge is awesome, and the central hub on bungie's site is awesome, but of course it isn't as awesome as an entire level editor.
Also, SSBB players, it looks like you will run into a problem that halo 3 players are having now- finding custom matches. There is no custom games list in halo, so the only way to have a custom game is with friends. Random people can't join unless they have recently played with you. It would be much worse with all the friend codes.
colin @ Oct 29th 2007 9:45PM
more like 2 melees duct-taped together
McWeen @ Oct 29th 2007 11:04AM
I believe you can save them to an SD card.
Level editors are always fun. That was the main reason I started playing Timesplitter games.
DemonGSides @ Oct 29th 2007 11:25AM
Besides them being made of pure awesome, right?
James @ Oct 29th 2007 11:28AM
Amen to that. Timesplitters level editor was fun.
Cesaria @ Oct 29th 2007 11:05AM
Could this game get any better? Shiggy as playable character? I guess it could.
ssuk @ Oct 29th 2007 12:09PM
The first few test versions of Super Smash Bros probably had Miyamoto as a playable character, it's a long running joke/tradition to have developers as characters in games during development. Not that has much bearing now, but just a little insight as to Miyamoto probably appeared in SSB, but not publically. =P
captainawesome @ Oct 29th 2007 11:00PM
They still could add a Belmont (preferably Richter).
GRANTED @ Oct 29th 2007 11:05AM
i can't think of a better application for a level editor. this is pretty sweet *SCHPLOP*
but.. why the GC controller in the upper corner?
pwnetheus @ Oct 29th 2007 11:12AM
A gamecube controller is probably being used as the controller in that screenshot. I'm guessing it's a little diagram to help to you what buttons do what. At least that's what it looks like with it saying L and R are for zoom.
AstroZombie @ Oct 29th 2007 11:12AM
That probably changes depending on which controller you're using. The SMB blog says all four control types are supported in the level editor.
Shinagani @ Oct 30th 2007 9:29AM
It's probably just a dev thing, it seemed pretty obvious when Brawl was announced that Sakurai was very partial to the traditional Gamecube control scheme. Nintendo probably forced him to equally support the other methods of play too.
Veko @ Oct 29th 2007 11:07AM
Aw to the some.
I love you right now, Nintendo.
DemonGSides @ Oct 29th 2007 11:26AM
Spelled awe wrong, just FYI.
Veko @ Oct 29th 2007 3:19PM
The E is in the 'the', silly.
Zoidberg Jesus (a.k.a. Jebo) @ Oct 29th 2007 11:08AM
If it is anywhere near as good as the level editor in Gameboy's Catrap, I will be a happy camper.
megaStryke @ Oct 29th 2007 11:20AM
HOLY SHIT! Other people have played that game! That edit mode was BITCHIN'!
Plus to you for obscure game referencing!
megaStryke @ Oct 29th 2007 11:27AM
By the way, you are official my favorite commenter on this site.
F. Rocker or Fernando R.? @ Oct 29th 2007 11:29AM
mega
And what number am I? =(
At least in the top ten?
Zoidberg Jesus (a.k.a. Jebo) @ Oct 29th 2007 11:37AM
Thank you for the flattering remark. Also, you’re right about the Catrap editor. It was awesome. I used to love placing those little cats and floating ghosts all every the stage and then giving it to my little sister to beat.
Deuz Augustine @ Oct 29th 2007 2:49PM
Oh my God, BEST FRIENDS.
I got my first Gameboy when I was like seven at a used games store for like $20, and for some reason it came with
Catrap. I wasted so much time on that game. The level editor was
amazing.
Holyshitholyshit SOMEONE ELSE HAS PLAYED CATRAP.

You know, even without a level editor, I still haven't stopped playing Melee. Brawl just keeps getting better and better. There's so much icing, I may never reach the cake.
Crono (NDF - Knight of the Old School) @ Oct 29th 2007 12:03PM
THE CAKE IS A LIE!
