With Halloween just around the dark and eerily-lit corner, Nintendo has released its latest batch of classic console offerings for the Wii's Virtual Console Monday smorgasbord, including Konami's strange but nonetheless fantastic action RPG hybrid Castlevania II: Simon's Quest, which to this day still has many of us humming its tunes while lathering up in the shower. But for the sake of argument let's assume you are not the sort of person who likes thwarting the undead with a thorny whip -- perhaps you'll enjoy what else this week has to offer:
Castlevania II Simon's Quest (NES, 1 player, 500 Wii Points): The gem of this latest batch, Simon's Quest reminds us that not only is it a horrible night to have a curse, but also that that shifty riverman has a thing for Dracula's heart.
Samurai Ghost (TurboGrafx16, 1 player, 600 Wii Points): If you can't beat'em, join'em seems to be the motif in Namco's 1992 side scroller, as Samurai Ghost has you floating about as the undead ronin Kagekiyo on a quest for revenge and, we assume, candy.
Magician Lord (Neo Geo, 1-2 players, 900 Wii Points): The latest Neo Geo release to crop up on the Virtual Console, Magician Lord is also one of the most fondly remembered among the pricey platform's library, and we're all too eager to rejoin the shape shifiting Elta, the last of the magician lords, on his quest to throw down with the nefarious Gul-Agieze.
I have never posted here before, but would just like to say that Simon's Quest for me is the best game ever. I'll never forget the feeling of satisfaction when I finally beat the game since I felt the difficulty level overall was simply insane. I remember writing down the "clues" from villagers ("A friend awaits in the town of Aljiba" and "A flame burns atop the 6th tree in Denis Woods") and then realizing that they meant nothing. I remember falling through the invisible floors in the mansions more times than I care to count. And I remember somehow stumbling upon the solution of how to get past the dead end and proceed to the mansions at the end of the game (there were no clues whatsoever in the game that told you about this!). Definitely a classic and a true steal at $5.
I mean, I'm glad genesis got to see the light of day, but the Saturn had some quality titles.
Three Dirty Dwarves, Virtua Cop 2 (configured to work with the wiimote?), NiGHTS, and my personal favorite, Shining Force III. I'd gladly pay 1000 points for that (using N64 as a measuring stick here).
Hell, even Sega CD stuff...well, actually, just Sonic CD and their port of Final Fight.
My only gripe with the VC is that when it does ports of arcade games, we're doomed to get incomplete versions. I made that mistake with the original Street Fighter II. It would've been nice to have the arcade version in this case, but alas, the Console in Virtual Console throws this off.
Anyway, to get on topic, I'd like to play Simon's Quest, as my NES experience was really short. I got an NES so late, and then a GameBoy the following year, then Genesis a while after that, and the poor NES never again saw the light of day. Plus, I was little and had my parents making my game purchases with the $$ in mind, so I received many a copy of Lee Carvallo's Putting Challenge
Simon's Quest is what I define to be the true beginnings of the current 2D series. Non-linear maps, secrets, RPG elements, and etc.
a) I really want to see this being remade, in the same vein as the current 2D series. (changes would mainly be graphical and controls) b) I hope the current 2D series would put back some of the stuff lost from here: Overworld which consists of more than the castle, an actual town with people, gameplay which takes into consideration the time (granted current gameplay does, but only in very minor gimmicy portions.)

I'm pretty sure that The Angry Videogame Nerd has something to say about Simon's Quest.

That reply was an affront to everything Zoidberg Jesus died for.

I mean.. you know those are the lyrics from the AVGN's theme song, right?
I'm not just a douche bag.
Well.. I AM one.. but not for THAT reason.

Love Simon's Quest.

Isn't Samurai Ghost another import title?

I haven't felt compelled to purchase a VC game since Super Metroid arrived. There better be some amazing games come December.
What's the general vibe? Is everyone satisfied with the variety and quality of the VC releases?
Jerk Face @ Oct 29th 2007 12:23PM
There have been a lot of crap titles, but some really good ones too. I want Super Mario Allstars!
AstroZombie @ Oct 29th 2007 12:51PM
It's a mixed bag. I've got over 20 VC games. I really regret wasting points on some of them, but there's enough greatness to make up for it.

Anyone else have problems with the video? I hit play and it takes me a nintendo press release page...
bombtrak @ Oct 29th 2007 1:20PM
Yep, can't play the video either, it's hyperlinked.
Lanturn of Ash @ Oct 29th 2007 12:18PM
Yet another game I'd like to buy, but alas, Nintendo is too fucking stupid to allow me to load from my SD card to free up some space.
AstroZombie @ Oct 29th 2007 12:53PM
Why don't you just move the games you're not playing to an SD card? Or delete them and re-download if you feel like playing them again?
Sean @ Oct 29th 2007 12:35PM
Samurai Ghost and Magician Lord are hilarious names.
Freelancepimp @ Oct 29th 2007 12:47PM
Man the music rocked back then.

could we get some more sega love on VC?
