Crysis shines gold, due out November 16
Electronic Arts has announced that the gorgeous (i.e. hardware-intensive) PC shooter Crysis has gone gold. Not just any gold, mind you, but a shiny brick of gold enhanced by HDR lighting and sure to require at least five denimite mem-shards.
Crysis, the first game to utilize CryENGINE 2, is still on track for its November 16 release. For those who want to brick their PCs early, the single-player demo is now available.

Anyone else think this game isn't going to sell well? I mean it runs like ass. you need some hardcore shit to make it look pretty and run over 30fps.
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Oct 29th 2007 10:15PM
I think it's going to sell average, but for completely different reasons. I think a lot of people are going to feel alienated by the game simply because they don't want to spend money upgrading their pc. Also it's because most gamers game on consoles and their too busy playing Halo 3 and Orange Box to give a shit about Crysis.

Most people who play halo never intended on buying Crysis in the first place, or know too little about it, so I doubt they lost any sales there since they never existed to begin with. I, for one, will be buying Crysis and thoroughly enjoying it.
Jeff @ Oct 29th 2007 9:41PM
Crysis is surprising in two ways. 1) It actually runs pretty easily on most systems, albeit not prettily. 2) All but a few DX10 features (object-based motion blur, I'm looking at you) have already been tweaked into DX9, with better performance.
bm @ Oct 29th 2007 11:31PM
Wow, really? Better performance? And here were all the DX10 proponents going "yeah so what if you could do all that stuff in DX9, you can do more of it in DX10 because it runs better!"
So just another case of defective by design, then?
Jeff @ Oct 30th 2007 6:50AM
Well, it's a slight performance boost. I imagine that it's a result of the few DX10 effects not yet enabled in XP, and a need for driver optimization. DX10 isn't the second coming, like some seemed to think, but so far I don't think it's bad. It's just being used before its time.

I love the demo. I've probably put 8-10 hours in, just messing around with explosions and things. Not to mention playing with the editor. Farcry (PC of course) was my favorite FPS of all time, and Crysis is looking to be a solid follow up.
JanJan @ Oct 29th 2007 9:50PM
Haha I love the demo too
I spent a really long time trying to level the entire forest.
Slaziman @ Oct 30th 2007 2:52AM
I spent a really long time trying to get it running, tweaking settings for optimal FPS, in the end I just gave up because even when it was running okay the game was pretty bad. Far Cry with gimmick modes. So I went and played Phantom Hourglass instead, man that game is so much better...
lpbrochu @ Oct 29th 2007 9:52PM
I second that, it runs surprisingly well on my system at the low settings and it still looks pretty good IMHO. It is much smoother on my system than Bioshock or Enemy Territory for example.
Jeff @ Oct 29th 2007 9:56PM
It really is amazing how many different ways you can accomplish a given task. The suit is just fun, easy-to-use, and amazing. It gives you a sense of power where it's not like "Hey, you're a specially bred super soldier. All of these n00bs are way below your level, but you'll still struggle sometimes because deep down, you suck." It gives you some advantages, that if you leverage properly, give you a small advantage over your enemies. If you can't use them right, you're nothing.
Anyone from the beta wanna talk about the multiplayer, if the NDA is up? Does the suit stay the same?
JontheNinja @ Oct 29th 2007 10:11PM
ran like ass on my computer.
BUT IT WAS SO FUN.
Einhanderkiller @ Oct 29th 2007 10:38PM
The game feels surprisingly smooth even at low framerates, and looks absolutely gorgeous at Very High settings. I got around 10 FPS at Very High (using modified .cfgs) with my 7900GT; around 20 to 30 FPS on high settings; and 30 to 40 FPS at medium. Very High isn't playable, but high and everything below is.
The 'Very High' parallax occlusion mapping is very impressive.

I was pleasantly surprised by how much game was to be found in that demo. I only expected the pretty graphics, not the fun, solid gameplay. This is definitely getting a purchase for me.
In the space of approximately a week, I will be picking up Haze, Assassin's Creed, Crysis, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune and Mass Effect.
I think I'll be set for a while.
dsub @ Oct 30th 2007 12:18AM
When Crytek sold the rights to Farcry, they should have gotten some fresh ideas. This game feels and plays exactly like Farcry 1 with better graphics.
Booooo.
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Oct 30th 2007 12:27AM
ummm.... You do realize that Crysis is made from the same people who did FarCry, Crytek.
gonk @ Oct 30th 2007 1:27AM
that's exactly what he said, vegita
Shagittarius @ Oct 30th 2007 2:51AM
Mario just called he needs another BJ.

Oh I see, he tried to be witty yet failed miserably. Oh ok I get it now.
ThornedVenom @ Oct 30th 2007 3:44AM
I had always thought that Crysis was an overrated game, just being awesome from being graphically beautiful, and would therefore neglect being a fun game.
The demo proved me wrong. I have to choose between Unreal Tournament 3 and Crysis for my next spending.
NPJ @ Oct 30th 2007 3:51AM
The demo is fantastic, this was a "Meh, ill buy it I guess" for me and now its a "DAY ONE ZOMG!".
Plenty of high-tier games do well, its not exactly a new concept.
Spakkenkhrist @ Oct 30th 2007 4:11AM
I managed to kill an enemy in the demo by felling a palm tree on to him and I spent an age just blowing up/driving through the buildings; I'll definitely be buying this just so I can do more of that.
SeriousKriss @ Oct 30th 2007 5:20AM
The beta MP was OK, but the single player demo was totally great. It's not perfect, but there are so many ways to get the objectives done (many more than in Far Cry) that I ended up replaying it 5 times. I'm not sure I ever did that before with a single player FPS demo. It's just that fun.
Sean @ Oct 30th 2007 11:00AM
I have a feeling my computer won't be able to run this.
Sean @ Oct 30th 2007 11:01AM
And that makes me a SAD PANDA. :(
rv @ Oct 30th 2007 11:43AM
My computer is good to go besides the graphics card. If I buy this http://www.superwarehouse.com/PNY_Verto_GeForce_8800_GTS_512_MB_Video_Card/VCG88GTSXPB/p/1494915
I can run it. All the other specs are met. But god damn, $350. I'm not sure.
alu @ Oct 30th 2007 1:27PM
There's no such thing as a NV 8800 GTS 512MB. It's probably the 640MB version.
I recommend picking up the NV 8800 GT 512MB (note, NOT 'GTS'). It just came out this week, costs $250 and performs close to the 8800 GTX. check anandtech.com or techreport.com for benchmarks and more details.
ChekhovsGun @ Oct 30th 2007 12:33PM
I punched a guy through a wall. Sold.
Shawn @ Oct 30th 2007 2:06PM
I had more fun with the Crysis demo than I did playing through the entire Halo 3 campaign. Farcry was one of my favorite FPS's of all time, and I think Crysis is going to take the crown once again. The game is so much goddamn fun it's ridiculous. Throw in the editor and this is an obvious no brainer.
The other point to realize is that even putting the majority of settings on Low with textures at medium, and running it at a decent resolution STILL looks better than any other game out there. I'm surprised at how well it runs on my 3700+ and 1950pro AGP card.
portuga-man @ Oct 30th 2007 5:12PM
i hear a lot about the graphics, but what's the freakin STORY of this game?
IMO this game will be a huge flop. yes, maybe a lot of people will buy it, but they'll immediately send it back to the stores when they realize their computers arent good enough to run it. cod seems a lot more fun and user-friendy.
gonk @ Oct 31st 2007 1:33AM
demo kept hiccuping every 20 secs or so on me, but the powers were great (especially invis). I couldn't find any trees that could be knocked down even with 5 super punches though, wtf. and the graphics looked pretty bad, like worse than far cry does on my 360
