But no, it seems all that clichéd sci-fi dreck we've watched and played has taught us nothing. If EA's recently unveiled horror, Dead Space, is anything to go by, it seems our future is still mired in mysterious distress signals (it's a trap!), poorly lit space stations and snarling tentacle things. See for yourself by watching the trailer embedded after the break. And before you jump to conclusions, note that the protagonist's head sadly does not fire high-velocity slices of atomic toast (it's been done).

Though science fiction is often optimistic about mankind's mastery of technology, it rarely doles out the same assurances when it comes to our intelligence or capability to make decisions. For instance, when faced with exploring a monster-infested set of steel corridors floating in space -- frequently an exploding barrel research facility where something has gone horribly wrong -- the best solution is to stay at home, where there's safety and oxygen.

Kind of reminds me of the first "Alien" movie. I like. A lot. I sure do hope it ends up being good.

This game looks so freakin scary - I'm sorry, but I'm the kind of person who A) hates things popping out of nowhere and B) can't stand not having full or close to full health. This game would satisfy neither of those things and I'd probably just be having a heart attack playing that thing, expecting some shit to pop out of nowhere at any second and then take half of my life away. I'd be SO paranoid. Otherwise, this game looks like it has some promise - good graphics, freaky setting ("entering zero-g" with dead bodies floating around everywhere) - it could be really good. We'll have to wait and see.

There's been a game like this on the ps2...I forget the name of it...but it was done poorly.
So the fact that this idea has been re-hashed over and over again is irrelevant since there's always room to do it "right" =)

It actually looks more like Doom 3 crossed with Event Horizon to me. It does look like it might be fun though.

Im assuming by your fan boi-ism including your profile pic and name has made you a bit angry today?? Especially considering how you were insinuating this was derived from the originality of Gears of War.
Yeah I did think of that all by myself! Imagine that.
You love Glitch of War and I think its poop...But dont play that you werent trying to jab at EA for copying your only reason for living (GOW)....Then try and call me out for pointing out the flaw in your pitiful argument...Just sad really

Woah take a chillaxative Johnny. So you dont like My precious Gears of War? Actually its mine and over 4 million others and counting once the PC version hits.
Sadly my copy of Gears has been retired for a while now since I have gotten all 1250 achievement points and moved on to Bioshock, Orange Box and Halo3.
Maybe you suck at Gears and thats why you dont like it? Or did you get team raped while you were down? lol Anyway yeah I do think alot of games are doing the 3rd pers perspective because of Gears popularity and not because of RE. I never said Gears was the originator or anything like that. Gears "borrowed" lol from alot of games. But it did in a far better way than any of those other games have =)

boy o boy does your youth show young padawan...Lets see your moving onto games Ive already demolished...I played Gears for a while...until people like you ruined the game and started glitching because of a lack of player skill...Thats why the game is poop..and oh yeah, cliffy B promised all content would be free and sure enough they started charging for maps and the like....and fyi gears doesnt come close to the complexity and story telling of RE4...Gears has a awe inspiring 8 hour single player campaign that a monkey could beat on the most difficult setting...Thats the core of any game the Single player mode...if not just make it like Shadowrun and watch how bad it flops...funny thing is I would own you in any game we played ... I could ruin Halo and Bioshock for you but ill choose not to spoil the endings... Bioshock is real good...Halo..eh not so much...point is your a moron who likes to sensationalize everything you say and your pathetic attempt at "street cred" for earning all your GOW gamer points speaks volumes about your lack of self esteem...basicly as a GOW player your probably good...as a human being your terrible...Anyone who has to gloat about gamer achivements is a total shallow individual...

Who made you Dr Phil? Self esteem? Street cred? Gloating? Glitchers like me? Something is really wrong with you. We are talking about videogames not life. There is a difference. Wow you are a complete and utter waste of time.

"Dead Space" Not a very good name for this title...I must say I like the switching between 3rd person over the shoulder an FP...I think it looks pretty solid....Having to use the flashlight seems pretty lame but all in all I think it *could* be a solid title...to bad its made by EA

By flashlight do you mean the lighthouse on his neck. 'Cause that plus a flashlight might be a wee bit redundant.

The first time Dead Space showed up in joystiq no one got my Dead Zone reference. Which made me sad. This time I'll make it even more obscure. ONE LINE.

We have a winner! (no, not the game, the posters!)
Alien, meets Doom on the Event Horizon.
IMHO, this game idea blows. A ship that large could have its logs d/l'd without even entering it. Then, nuke it from a safe distance (or remotely tug it into a star's gravity and incinerate it). Insurance picks up the tab and no one get's hurt. Accident's happen. No need to make a game to exploit unrealistic fear as ITS BEEN DONE!

you're being sarcastic right?
if not.
what if comm was down. no logs. Depending on whether space travel as been privatized, insurance wouldnt have anything to do with a space ship.

Also, it sort of states that you're part of the crew, not part of a rescue team...in which case the game is more about whether or not that one crew member is able to survive more so than whether or not an outside source can deal with a threat on a lone ship.
Either way, it looks like a pretty terrible game. Mass Effect, please.

Good idea. I say we take off, nuke the site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.
Seriously though, this thing is giving me flashbacks to "Run Like Hell".

Hopefully has the level of atmosphere of Bioshock but much better gameplay. (combat in bioshock wasn't too great imo)
