Eye of Judgment cards can be copied, played
In one of those "Really? Did no one check this?" bits of news, it appears that the trading cards used to play Eye of Judgment with the PlayStation Eye can not only be copied, but those dupes can be used in regular play. Though the cards were supposedly printed with some sort of magical ink supposed to prevent this sort of thing, it's apparently happening pretty rampantly.
The winners here are, as you may have guessed, the unscrupulous, who can add new cards to their deck at the bargain price of nothing. The losers are honest people like yourself that will have to buy packs and possibly still not get the cards they want. Oh, and Sony and Wizards of the Coast have the potential to lose big time too, as they're paying to print the things and ship them to stores. But we trust you not to hurt their bottom line so callously, dear readers. We know that when you avoid buying a pack of cards to spread on a table to let a camera take a picture of them, you'll be doing it for the right reason: Self-respect.

This is a really innovative concept for a game, but I just can't bring myself to that level of nerdville. Hopefully the PS Eye will be utilized in different ways other then the "Eye of Judgment."
Phranctoast @ Oct 29th 2007 1:45PM
I hear ya. It looks awesome yet its just to much geek for me. Does one need to dress up to play?
xXFenixKnight13Xx @ Oct 29th 2007 1:48PM
"nerdville"
LMAO!!!!!!!
AstroZombie @ Oct 29th 2007 2:17PM
Gee whiz! I hope I can be as cool and un-nerdy as you guys when I grow up!

"Gee whiz! I hope I can be as cool and un-nerdy as you guys when I grow up!"
In time grasshopper.
In time.

Perhaps if I was interested in being celibate I would purchase "Eye of Judgment." I did imply earlier that I am at a certain level of nerdville, just not the "Eye of Judgment" level! I think the fact that you can print your own cards is irrelevant. This game was a niche game from the start!
MegaSnort @ Oct 29th 2007 3:29PM
Its not the CCG keeping you from getting laid, its your face and personality =D
aaron_k7 @ Oct 29th 2007 3:52PM
You're so right MegaSnort. The red "M" hat, big nose, and molestache are just not working these days!
Chris @ Oct 29th 2007 1:34PM
LOL ! unlucky, didnt sony check this?? if news gets out (which it jsut did) everyone will be doing this and thus riuning the game completly, well online anyway.
Christian @ Oct 29th 2007 1:44PM
The whole worry about copying is rather silly. People have been able to do this with every collectible card game out so far, yet the impact is off the radar. Making a copy proof system would probably made the cards so expensive that nobody would have bought them for that reason. Keeping the cards affordable (yet possible to copy) is a better way of combating piracy than expensive and usability painful locking technologies. The music industry is slowly waking up to that fact in regards to music online.
In the end I think when you get hooked on a collectible card game you want 'real' cards and thus do not bother with copies.
Will people copy cards, sure. But I think it will be a small issue. And the main copiers will be people to try to copy every rare and expensive card out there, then gets frustrated when their 'superdeck' lose most of the time and they move on to something else.
My best decks in Magic the Gathering had almost no special cards in them, instead it was based on small common cards which synergized well.
Lone Starr @ Oct 29th 2007 3:34PM
^
So worrying about people stealing a product that you invested millions in is an unfounded concern? Please....
And these cheaters won't get hooked on "real" cards the same way cheaters in any other online game don't get hooked on "real" victories or stats.
They can and will cheat behind a veil of anonymity.
ugg.tryptophan @ Oct 30th 2007 12:42AM
ah, remember the times you couldnt afford pokemon cards so you went to the corner store and got a counterfeit nidoran for 5 cents, i sure do
a.j. @ Oct 29th 2007 1:37PM
I have mixed feelings about this.
1. Gameplay wise, there are rules set up so you can't just load your deck with overpowered cards so it won't kill the experience for people, this is a good thing.
2. The bad thing is that WTF?! I own all 3 consoles and I have to say, the constant barrage of stupid news like this make me really question the future of this console. I want to support it, I try, but it's always something. Between the Ratchet and Clank HDD glitch (which I encountered) to this huge oversight, it's almost like they want to fail. Where is the quality control?
3. It's still a cool game so claps for trying something different. Shame it has to be plagued with another oversight.
Mixed feelings :(
PickyPants @ Oct 29th 2007 1:45PM
If I may,
It's not a question of cheating since the game randomizes your cards, its a question of completely trivializing the card buying segment of Sony/Wizard's profit.
This is really, really bad news for them if they can't fix this.
NATO_Duke @ Oct 29th 2007 1:39PM
This would be a huge problem if people were rushing out to buy this. Lucky for the 12 players, this isn't that big of a draw. Anyway, I place the game on the top of my "meh" list. I still don't get playing a card game over the internet - it seems weird.
Besides, we were all talking about this issue a week or so ago...on this site even.
AstroZombie @ Oct 29th 2007 1:53PM
Yeah, this isn't news.
Christian @ Oct 29th 2007 1:58PM
@Nato_Duke: I think the popularity of this game will be bigger than you anticipate. Looking at game.co.uk its their 5th biggest seller atm, ranking above Fifa08 for the PS3 and just below PES2008 for the Xbox360. (PES3008 for the PS3 is their number one seller atm). At play.com its the 62 biggest selling item atm, which puts it between Sid Meyers Civilisation for the PC and Singstar R&B for the PS2. (And once again PES08 for the PS3 is their biggest selling title).
So for what is both an expensive and very different game I it looks to me like its selling quite well.
NATO_Duke @ Oct 29th 2007 2:57PM
Christian, that pretty interesting. Thanks for the info. I was more or less looking at it from the standpoint that I hear no interest in in from folks I know, and the stores around here don't seem to be having problems keeping it in stock. In fact, one place I was at said they have had the same 1 copy since release.
Brello @ Oct 29th 2007 2:58PM
Agreeed. When it comes to niche markets, this is about as trivial as you can get.
xXFenixKnight13Xx @ Oct 29th 2007 1:46PM
This Game = POOP....100% grade A at that
sorry

Sony & magical ink FTL!
Marty @ Oct 29th 2007 1:53PM
We really don't see "FTL" often enough... "FTW" gets all the play. So thank you for that.
FOXHOUND @ Oct 29th 2007 1:56PM
I bought some 'magical ink' cartridge just yesterday for my HP printer... thinking I'd see some crazy Griffindor shiz in EYE OF JUDGEMENT. But it turns out it was 'Hewlett Packard' not 'Harry Potter'. So I tried to return that cartridge but they put my receipt in defense mode, claiming their blue eyes, white dragon of a boss would throw me out the store for trying to return used merchandise.
Stupid "out of the closet" wizards and their confusing cheat methods. :(
baby sea tuna @ Oct 29th 2007 2:15PM
"We really don't see "FTL" often enough... "FTW" gets all the play. So thank you for that."
I honestly think people need to stop using both of them...unless the sentence is "Overwhelmingly cliched internet memes FTW/FTL!!!1!"
Oh, and while we're at it, let's get rid of "meh." It was funny when the Simpsons did it like 10 years ago, but it's starting to get a little stale.
AstroZombie @ Oct 29th 2007 2:19PM
Meh, baby sea tuna FTL.
Sorry, couldn't resist.
xXFenixKnight13Xx @ Oct 29th 2007 2:43PM

It's okay. Being ahead of the curve usually means you get tired of stuff before the masses. You'll all come around eventually.
nerrrrrrd @ Oct 29th 2007 3:13PM
some day in the future, people who are cool and "ahead of the curve" will no longer be referred to as 'hip' but instead they will be labeled "baby sea tuna"
rockintom @ Oct 29th 2007 3:47PM
Meh.
NATO_Duke @ Oct 29th 2007 4:43PM
I have no idea what "meh" has to do with the Simpsons. Just because a word or phrase is used in a show - it doesn't mean that's the word's root.
robert @ Oct 29th 2007 1:52PM
when playing online your cards are randomly chosen for you, so there's no guarantee that the card you've copied will be of any use to you during a game.
you also have to place the card on the playing field in view of the camera and your opponent can see it on screen, observant people would most likely be able to tell the difference between a color copy and an actual card.
that being said, yes people will find a way to successfully cheat the system if they are determined to do so... just like any other online game you've ever played, only instead of exploiting hacks or glitches in the code they'll be using a color copier.
Crono (NDF - Knight of the Old School) @ Oct 29th 2007 1:57PM
Analog cheating FTW!!!
oldest gamer @ Oct 29th 2007 1:53PM
Gaming has gone mainstream so the nerd factor is not appreciated as we gamers were once all nerds. Now that everyone else has caught up, this game and other like it will suffer as todays gamer try to wrap their heads around it. A great innovative game worth $59.99 for the camera and a starter deck. Too bad like anything else that isn't nailed down, it will be copied, distributed and hated because it costs money. I'll be buying it, what an idea! I hope other developers will see this game and the technology behind it and create something else unique.
James @ Oct 29th 2007 1:55PM
So you have to buy cards to use in a game that requires a purchase and a Sony webcam too.
I suppose it's right up there with charging for virtual clothes and furniture.
Synner @ Oct 29th 2007 2:03PM
God, and then you have to buy a tv to play it on, and then you hae to buy a house with electricity, then you don't have any friends, so you have to hire hookers to play with you, plus there's a camera, so poeple can see you = no playing in the buff, so you have to buy clothes, Holy shit now you're half a million in the hole for one game!!!
Penny arcade FTW!!!
James @ Oct 29th 2007 3:10PM
Games are supposed to reward skill, not how much you money you put into a game.
Then again I suppose Sony have to make money from somewhere.
GRANTED @ Oct 29th 2007 3:59PM
and yet, inexplicably, people love WoW.
James @ Oct 29th 2007 4:18PM
Vote logic down!
So one guy can become as skilled as Jesus at a game like this. Get a decent strategy etc, but get pwned by some knob of a kid who's mum bought him a "rare card" off eBay.
Who designed this game?
Frank @ Oct 29th 2007 1:57PM
I've got magic ink, who wants a deck of cards.
fawazr @ Oct 29th 2007 2:16PM
+1 for Eric Stoltz.
EihBeir @ Oct 29th 2007 2:01PM
No wonder Sony took their time jumping into this next generation... they must have known they were about to go from the market leader to a punchline.
John M @ Oct 29th 2007 2:01PM
why anyone would cheat at a videogame is beyond me. I had to quit playing Madden because of the pause glitch. Honestly, whats th epoint??? You dont win anything and your not using any skill. I suppose its to be ranked in the top 10 or something. Rather juvenile. Just play the game. If you win then fine , if you lose well thats ok too at least you lost fair and square.
Mr Slavio @ Oct 29th 2007 2:40PM
Skill really wouldn't be a factor anyways. Buying the real cards just means you have more money that you're comfortable blowing on a ton of card packs. If everyone has access to the entire library of cards and still puts together a strong deck and strategy to keep winning consistently THEN it's skill. It's not like there's an ultra-god-game-winning card that you should have to buy a dozen boosters to get. This is more like cheating Sony and Wizards of the Coast out of ridiculous profit margins than cheating your fellow gamers. I'm all for it.
John M @ Oct 29th 2007 3:18PM
Salvio--
Right on I was talking more in general terms. I dont play these card games. I played pogs in middle school which was the closest thing to it. Dont you think if people dont buy the cards then the game will not be supported with updates? As for cheating in general terms its pretty deplorable and pointless. Why cheat when all you get is the satisfaction of winning unfairly.
Game Artist @ Oct 29th 2007 2:04PM
No sympathy here. CCG's are already stupid expensive if you want to play competitively. That is you better plan on dropping at least $300-400 3-4 times a year to buy multiple cases of each expansion. Then you tack on a computer game on top of it that will probably charge for the expansions too? Agg. I thought the good part of a computer game would be that you could get rid of the collectible part. Then games would come down to luck and skill- not how big your wallet is so you can buy every card you need.
