Team Fortress 2 players will be happy to hear that The Orange Box has finally received the update promised by Valve. The patch went up over the weekend, and players will be prompted to update the title whenever they load the game on their 360s. We haven't had a chance to see if Team Fortress 2's lag problems have been effectively addressed yet, but here's hoping. Anyone out there noticing a difference?

The lag issue has completely killed my desire to play TF2. I hope the patch inspires me to go back and play it again.

what's even more unsurprising is who it is NOT posted by - Canada's own David Dredger - who hasn't made a blog post in as long as I can remember.
methink Dustin and Richard have him locked up on the roof of Fanboy Towers and are plotting something evil. I can only hope David can find a helpful butterfly to summon a large eagle to speed him back to the shire in time to prevent them from securing The One Ring from Frodo.

I received an/the update Sunday morning (GMT) but I've still had a number of issues with lag that's so bad I've had to drop out of the game. This nearly always affects other players too as I can hear the countless WTF voices over the mic.
Certainly won't stop me playing though...
...until CoD4!

Ya this has definitely helped. Cause what it does is boot a player that is lagging out the room. Well at least that is my experience.

Seems to me that there is less of the "lost connection to host" and instead the game, when it starts to lag, just tries to push through the lag. Perfect it is not but i guess some patch is better than no patch at all. Valve get some DLC out!!

I tried playing over the weekend and still had problems with lost connections and locking up. This fun little gem is being ruined by something lesser games seem to get right.

Most of the lag problems in TF2 seem to be the host. There are too many people trying to host 16 man games that simply can't. Find a room that is lagging and chances are it's a 16 man room. Have the host start a new game with 12 and under and you'll find the lag problems gone.

The main improvement is that you can see little green bars (or red) to see if the host has good latency before joining a game. If they have green bars and it's not a 16 player game, then join up and enjoy!

You see, john, there's a reason why we pay for XBox Live. It's to not have lag on our games. This isn't the fault of the host, it's Valve's fault with the programming. I played CoD3 for a long time and had lagless 24 player matches. You had to screw around with your router for it to work right, but when you did it, it all worked.

Does the job for me, although coincidently I only picked up a copy of the game on the day the patch hit xbl, but its been smooth playing since I ARGHHHHH! (Damn it ive been stabbed in the back by the Spy AGAIN!!!)

i noticed a little to no difference. theres still some major lag, mainly depending on the ping of whos hosting. basically 1/5 games i quit because of unbearable lag. i'm starting to regret buying the console version of the orange box, as the pc at least has capacity for dedicated servers, and modding.
still my current favorite game.

There's still lag. Tried to play in a 12 person match and a 16 person match. I hosted. Never have problems hosting in other games and there was tons of lag. Laggy, lag ... lag..

Less crashes, still lag.
For whatever reason, the Team Fortress crashes my system, not just lost connection, but teh patch fixed that, but now I notice the lag much more. The patch is an improvement, but not a fix.

@kogen, that's pretty funny. so you think the yearly subscription to Xbox Live is for dedicated servers? you are sorely mistaken sir!
the yearly subscription provides us matchmaking servers, live messaging, friends list, etc.
dedicated servers are NOT part of the equation and any dedicated servers are at the cost of the publisher/developer. (see BF2:MC for example)

Yeah, with the patch I was able to play a lagless 12 player game, something I couldn't do before the patch/ I've yet to try a 16 player game but I presume that'll work too.

I was prompted for the update Friday evening around 1 AM EST. I had been playing TF:2 for a few hours prior to it and had just power cycled my XBOX from the latest TF:2 caused lockup when Valve released the patch.
Can't say if the lag has improved but other issues still occur such as the aforementioned XBOX freezes in TF:2 and the random player drops during match startup.

@17:
You were host and it was laggy?
You can't know whether it's laggy or not when you're host unless it was the graphics lagging on your system, and in that case it wouldn't be a connection problem.

Still lags like crazy even after the update. Also, achievement issues have not been fixed.
I have 25/25 head shots and the Grey Matter achievement still has not unlocked.

Man I'm glad Warhawk and other PSN games don't let you overhost like Orange Box does. How hard is it to test players upstreams first, Valve?
Maybe Gabe should put the delicious cakes down and make sure things are built properly from now on.

I think if most people experiencing lag issues should test their highspeed connection. You don't get what you pay for. Test your connection speed you will see.

The game is lag free for me until I get in a game over 12 people. Then it is ridiculous lag fest. No it isn't my connection. I have 6m down and 1m up. I tried many different games and all were the same. Maybe every game I was in had a slow host, but who knows.
Luckily the game is fun with only 12 people. I also have the PC version. So, for big games, I play it there.
