The word you're looking for is: FINALLY. Sony America finally gets their damn head in the game to sell some PS3s with a new ad campaign for this holiday. Sony Senior VP of Marketing and PSN Peter Dille wrote a long love letter on Sony's blog about the plan with this holiday's marketing. "Last year, we launched the PS3 with a campaign that become known as the 'White Room' and we received a strong reaction to those ads for being provocative and demonstrating the PS3's power," Dille wrote, obviously unaware of the extremedelusion in that statement. "With those technology messages now firmly embedded, we wanted to move beyond the 'power' message with a more high-energy, entertainment driven focus for the PS3. The games are here, the price point is now $399 and we wanted to make the news loud and clear."
The 30 second spot (above) focuses on the exclusive games for the console. And in a shocker for Sony, they actually show the games in the ads. After the break is the 60 second spot focusing on the PS3's features. Now we wait to see if new consumers notice the lack of backwards compatibility in their new $399 PS3.
Wow. As of Nov. 1st 2007 I officially drop my 360 fanboyism. If this commercial is the start to what Sony says they gonna do then I'll will get one. Good job Sony!
"And a final nail in the coffin to "there's no games on that system"". Yeah, there's a very small handful now. I hope that changes soon. Still isn't anything I want to play on it yet. Not a fanboy either, I own/love PS(1,2,P) and most other game systems.
About damn time someone realized how important marketing is at Sony.
Look at Nintendo. Sure, they had an innovative and unique product, but the marketing (by Reggie, who was not named Marketer of the Year without just cause) really set it apart. The quirky commercials and advertising reflected how the system was unlike anything else and really got the people interested.
This commercial does a good job of targeting people who would spend $400 to buy a console (i.e. a lot of people who bought the original 360 at $400 in terms of spending ability) and should help Sony out because unless people know about it, it might as well not exist.
i saw a second of their new ads where the ps3 is like a morphing swiss army knife, it really shows how they're throwing everything but a kitchen sink into em to try to generate hype
For the same reason they didn't show Resistance... But if you didn'T noticed, there was a big dragon head coimng out of the box for quite a long time... They just don't have time to shw EVERYTHING !
Nintendo didn't make Cooking Mama and there was a commercial that showed Wario Ware, if memory serves. ...dunno about Strikers, as I no longer have the ability to watch TV.
Why are we still harping on the lack of backwards compatibility?
Do consumers notice the awful BC on the Xbox 360 that Microsoft has done almost nothing to support within the past year? No, they don't really seem to care that much. The type of consumer who does still has an option in the 80GB and 60GB models.
They last updated the BC July 12, 2007, which, last time I checked, was 3 1/2 months ago, not a year. Currently, the 360 supports 42% of Xbox games, which is approximately 42% more BC than new PS3 owners get.
Actually, I believe even the 40 GB still supports PS1 games. Also, since the 80 GB is still around, your point it moot anyway since someone wanting BC can just buy one of those.
Many of the games listed as working don't even work right.
360's BC is very poor, to be honest I feel MS showed Sony the way on BC. MS showed that you don't really need BC to sell a lot of consoles.
People seem to want BC, but to be honest, they don't really seem to use it. I listen to the guys on 1up Yours argue about BC every week right now and talking about Guitar Hero and such and none of them realize that Guitar Hero 1/2 don't work on PS3s of any sort. If no one is trying the top or near top PS2 game on PS3s right now, then does BC even really matter?
Dude, you so have no freaking idea what your even talking about. (Rolls eyes) I have like 25 Xbox games and I can play 23 of them on my Xbox 360. ESPN 2k5 and Baseball 2k5 are still left out. =(
Back to the subject at hand: With all due respect to Sony fanboys - SONY HAS FINALLY PULLED THEIR HEADS OUT OF THEIR COLLECTIVE ASS! LoL Good for them. Maybe they'll actually provide some competition and make the "console war" interesting again. =)
Sony does support it, douche. You are so caught up in your hate for Sony that you will say things that dont make sense just to make them look bad.
They give you the option of buying the one that has BC or not.
I have a few buddies have said, the PS3 is going to be 400 bucks? I may get one now. After I explained that it had no BC, they didn't care. I think that you will find a lot of the world doesnt care. Those who do can spring for the 80GB. Conversation over.
What about Europe? The 60GB model has been discontinued over there. Once that's sold out, new customers will be stuck with the gimped 40GB model, unless they plan on announcing another model to replace the 60GB one.
Well, these ones aren't grossly incompetent, to their credit. They're also *EXTREEEEEEEEEEME*, so at least they've got a target audience in mind...though it makes me wonder how wise it is to be going so blatantly after the hardcore gamer demographic, which MS has locked up pretty solidly. Still, I can't really point out anything really wrong with those ads...or at least the first one.
They're still likely fucked this Christmas, though.
Sure, it's a little preteen-in-your-face-ish (reminds me of SEGAs old ads a bit, actually), but they're at least looking in the right direction now. Hopefully they continue to add more focus on the games, you know, the only things that actually matter. I care not about blue laser diodes, SPUs and cell processors, as they give me little entertainment. Time will tell how Christmas will turn out for them.
I agree Microsoft has that demo locked but I don't think Sony is really targeting any demographic they're just spraying shit everywhere hopping someone will buy it.

What a KICK ASS commercial. Nice!!
And a final nail in the coffin to "there's no games on that system". You can now retire that one. Along with "it's too expensive".
Slaziman @ Nov 1st 2007 12:58PM
There are games... but they pale in comparison to the 360 library.
Joshua @ Nov 1st 2007 1:23PM
Hmmm...Much much better, to say the least.
Very high energy song, too. Good choice.

You should watch the full version of the ad, it is actually better.

I would totally buy a game where you give Sony head with PS3 ads in it.
It'll be called...Sony Defense Force: The Game

3 work on 360 and that's if you include Forza, which doesn't work correctly despite what they say.
Does it mean I don't enjoy my 360? Nope. And that's my point. BC is overrated.

jorojoserojas @ Nov 1st 2007 12:03PM
These commercials were pretty good. I'm glad Sony has finally put focus into creating real advertisements as opposed to small art-house movies.
But damn it! I can't find a new 60GB PS3 anywhere! I think I might be too late, and I don't want to spring for an 80GB with weak BC.
I never really buy used consoles, but this may be my only option.
