Assassin's Creed nabs 37/40 from Famitsu

We've been big supporters of Assassin's Creed throughout its development. Not only because it looks fantastic, but because the advertising for the game has been incredible and we are very easily swayed. Thankfully though, it seems our faith has not been misplaced: The game walked away with a combined score of 37/40 from the notorious reviewers at Famitsu. (You can see a tiny scan right here.)

As a point of reference, 37 is one point lower than Super Mario Galaxy and the same as Halo 3 , so it seems that Ubisoft's marketers can now add "critically acclaimed" to Assassin's Creed ads. ... As if they needed to be more compelling.

yeah this confirms a.c. in my book. say what you will about nintendogs and halo3, famitsu-acclaimed games get dank sales. might be time to bolster the french economy and pick up some ubistock.

I know it is getting a good rating but I still am going to wait until real game players give their review. There has just been too many acclaimed games getting a good review to be a piece of garbage when actually played by real gamers.

What games are you referring to? I am just curious. And by "when played by real gamers" are you trying to say "when I played it I didn't like it"? Are you against the 360, which has gotten a few well received games lately?

I just have never heard the argument "critics liked x game last week but real gamers hated it." before. Most critics are pretty hardcore gamers.

I don't trust famitsu after they gave lair such a high rating. I have a PS3 by the way, rented Lair based on famitsu review, it was mediocre at best.

Famitsu reviews games that they haven't actually played so I will also wait.

Why is famitsu so reputable? They gave FFXII a perfect score. That game is the worst FF I've ever played (besides X-2). They gave Nintendogs a perfect score. Really? Nintendogs is better than Halo? Even if you don't like Halo there is more to do in it than walk a dog.

I agree with you on the compelling ads though. Those ads are so good that I bet if someone spoke negatively about the game a flock of doves would fly by and then guy would drop to the ground with a knife in his back.

Grasp how game reviews work, and then complain.

Games are reviewed based on their genre. Nintendogs perfectly achieved what it set out to do as a pet simulator. They're not saying "Halo is good, but NINTENDOGS IT IS NOT!" they're saying "As a FPS, there are a few flaws but Halo is damn close to perfection."

So, learn that, and then you have the right to complain. As of right now you have no right to complain.

Alright Jon. You got me there (even though I still disagree with a perfect score for Nintendogs), but it certainly doesn't invalidate my point. FFXII is in the same boat as all previous FF games, but it completely sucked and Famitsu raved about it.

This is exactly the same method employed by some film critics, most notably, Roger Ebert. You cannot honestly compare “Gone with the Wind” to something like “Airplane” but you can rate each in their respective genres to pure perfection.

Huh? Final Fantasy XII is one of the best FF out there.

Maybe compared to 8, 10, 10-2, and 12, but not compared to 4, 5, or 6.

Different cultures. Blue Dragon is another example. Famitsu gave it good scores, but it got knocked pretty hard by some western reviewers.

Anyway, weren't they fairly recently involved with some scandal over giving higher score to games based on advertising in their magazine or something? Or is that someone else?

Either way, I don't put a lot of stock in their scores simply because of the cultural differences.

FFXII the best FF out there? Mediocre backdrop story that rips off star wars, no character progression, poor combat system, terribly flawed license system, and the most over the top metrosexual character in any game?

FFXII is so bad that its shaken my faith in the series and I'm going to wait till XIII is out to even think about FF again.

Square's quality peaked on the SNES. Although I greatly enjoyed some of their early PS offerings (FFT, FFVII, Brave Fencer Mushashi) FFXII was pretty bad. When you compare it to Oblivion, FFXII is nothing more than a generic ill-conceived dinosaur of a game. One is easily the greatest immersive RPG to date, boasting an advanced physics engine to boot, while the other a tedious grind fest with cookie-cutter plot feature vapid, uninspired characters that didn't even have unique class/skill distinction. Not only that, but 80% of the damn game could be cleared on auto-pilot thanks to the gambit system. I know they were on different generation consoles, but even when compared to Morrowind or KotOR, FFXII still comes off as a steaming pile of crap. Don't great me wrong, I love JRPGs, but lately the genre has become stale and dated. Hopefully Crisis Core combat system is the step forward i've been waiting for and results in some much needed momentum for JRPG evolution.

Still up in the air about this one.

I absolutely hate the 40 point scoring system Famitsu has in place. It always makes it seem like the game got a lower score than it actually did.

I already pre-ordered this. I am happy that it got a good review. Hope it keeps getting good review. I am already pump about it.

Now the only thing I need is a second job so I can pay for all these games coming out!

I only really trust IGN's reviews.

Call me crazy but with the exception of one game, I felt I agreed 99% with their reviews after playing the game, regardless of whether or not I read the review first.

(The one game was Guild Wars Factions, in which the review attacked things in the game that prove he didn't play it past the tutorial area!)

I usually go with IGN, 1up, Gametrailers and Gamespot. They usually all do a fair reviews.

At least for xbox360 titles they all do, I dont know about Gamespots hate for PS3 though =( lol

Gamespot is far from unfair
All they do is take everyone's score and subtract it by 2 :'(

I only trust reviews at netjak.com (shameless plug)

netjak's halo 3 review was SPOT ON. love that site.

You trust IGN? They where the shit back in the 90s but umm probably the worst place to get anything game related on the internet now.

IGN is my main review site, at least for Nintendo platforms. They're Nintendo team is great.

Man I hate to admit this but yeah I have started to trust IGn scores also. And I used to despise them with a passion, but lately they seem really dead on, and a lot of my friends have been noticing the same trend.
