MCV is reporting that a new PlayStation 2 model will hit the US in 2008 for $99. This new model will allegedly sport a more "compact" design and have a "built-in power supply." Although we've known MCV to get overly excited in reporting things, they're reporting this as fact. Sony "refused to comment."
According to MCV if the product is introduced in the UK it would be £75 or lower. The PS2 celebrated its seventh birthday last week and Sony has said they expect the console to last ten years.

How can it even get smaller!?!?!? Heck if they do shrink it down they could start competeing with the PSP as people could just pop on one of those tiny LCD screens and BOOM a real portable PS2!

Maybe they're dropping the PS2 game compatibility in this as well...

Hell Frank, I laughed at the joke. Just because you love the black monolith doesn't mean you can't take a bit of mild humor. Anyone considering a $99 PS2 isn't going to care.

Let it die? Are you kidding, it's still SELLS. Eventually it will die, when it stops selling and third parties stop producing titles for it.

$99 seems a little steep. It's old tech, there's no reason it should be so expensive *stares at Wii*

Considering that the Wii is constantly sold out I know it'll be impossible for them to justify a price cut to their investors or superiors, but as soon as that thing starts to exceed demand, I really hope they cut the price $50-100.

$99 is what the Gamecube used to cost. And now it costs $250.
Hey, Sony....there's an idea for you...take the PS2, reskin it, throw in some waggle controllers in the box and sell as NEXT GEN for $250.

FranktheCrank hey that's what Sony did, except its $400 and it's called a PS3. But they forgot to add in backwards compatibility.

This is ridiculous. By all means do it for handhelds, since they age much quicker by design.
Still it's good for me. I'd buy a Ps2 slim thingy but they cost more than a DS Lite here. Screw that. Sell it for £40 and I'll consider it.

they should release one at $79. I'd pick up an extra for that.

$99? Why stop there? Drop that bitch to $2.50 and shelve 'em right next to the packs of Juicy Fruit and issues of Archie & Jughead at the grocery store.

Its about time. There are far too few PS2's out there! /sarcasm.
To JodyAnthony, why would you buy an extra PS2 if it was 79? Its a last gen console, and the word extra implies you already own it. Why waste the money on a second one? I doubt that the general market would act that way.

Isn't it obvious? You get a second one so that the first one isn't lonely.

ok, this has to be pretty stupid on Sony's part. Here they are, having a 7 year old product with 1000s of games selling for an extremely low price point, but at the same time, trying to sell the PS3 for 400 bucks with less than 100 games. Sony, you should kill your legacy hardware and support the software in your next gen hardware a la xbox. Does any of this make sense to them?

Microsoft killed XBOX 1 cause it wasn't selling and they had to revamp their failing games division.
XBOX 1 tapped out at 24 million units in 4 years. PS2 has sold over 125 million units in 7 years. And it's STILL SELLING well. Why would you stop making something that actually sold?

well yeah, the PS2 is extremely successful, but does make sense from a business point of view to sell it on the same shelf as the PS3 while trying to promote the PS3 as the superior platform. And don't tell me that it is, because from a gaming point of view, having 1000s of titles to choice from, as well as PSOne support is a bit better than the less than 100 games the PS3 has to offer.
Also, this isn't set in stone because eventually the PS3 will have a ton more games and they'll stop selling the PS2.

The main reason is fairly simple. Go to EBgames website. Notice anything in the listed systems? Like which ones are missing versus which one is STILL there. PS2 STILL shifts units and game sales. Until that officially dries up and starts disappearing from consumer electronics websites, pushing the PS2 format makes sense.

That's why Sam doesn't work for Sony!
Not everybody has a HDTV and 7.1 (5.1 for the eks bawks) surround sound and $400 to spend on a console that has $60 games.
The $99 PS2 is gonna make a bunch of my little cousins and nephews happy this christmas since I'll be picking up a couple along with some of the $20 greatest hits games.

PS2 rules. For the consumer who isn't into all the specs and HD and online etc. like we are, a $99 PS2 can't be beaten. Sure, it seems redundant (who doesn't have a PS2), but the thing is still selling, so there must be some market out there for it.

I admit it. I don't have a PS2. I had one back in the day, but got rid of it when the xbox came out. Halo hooked me, and I never looked back. System link Halo was far to superior to anything on the PS2 for me to care about.

Seems like a bad idea for sony to me. I know the PS2 is their best defence against the Wii, but its also likely to harm any attempts to sell the PS3.
I know for sure i'd rather buy a cool, tiny, cheap PS2 than a PS3.

Anybody who gave a crap about those games (especially niche titles like Okami and SoTC) would've played them already; you know, back in their respective years of 2007, 2006 and 2005?
I'm pretty sure I was talking about 2008. Wait hold on.....I'm looking.....yeah, I did.

michas_pi - though I agree that there are lots of great PS2 games out there, his post did say in '08.
The games you listed are no where near '08 games.
Anyone voting you up on your comment must be fanboys - because we all know those games you listed are older.
(Double post due to this damn reply system!!)
