MCV is reporting that a new PlayStation 2 model will hit the US in 2008 for $99. This new model will allegedly sport a more "compact" design and have a "built-in power supply." Although we've known MCV to get overly excited in reporting things, they're reporting this as fact. Sony "refused to comment."
According to MCV if the product is introduced in the UK it would be £75 or lower. The PS2 celebrated its seventh birthday last week and Sony has said they expect the console to last ten years.

Well considering I already have a PS2 (Old one) and a PS3, I would buy a new redesigned PS2 for $99.
You know just for the sake of collecting video consoles.

michas_pi - though I agree that there are lots of great PS2 games out there, his post did say in '08.
The games you listed are no where near '08 games.

PS2 is a great system, and anyone complaining about this is a troll, period.
For the record, I think the PS3 is a clusterfuck as is. So please don't label me SDF.
Also FUN TRIVIA: In French, "SDF" means Sans Domicile Fixe, or HOMELESS. Yes, so everyone in the SDF is a hobo.
PS2, XBox, Dreamcast, and Gamecube were all awesome systems. That was a great time for gaming. Dissing any of those systems make you look stupid. Don't do it.

So wait.
PS3 drops 100 bucks, and loses backwards compatibility.
Rumored new PS2 for 100 bucks.
Aha, almost had me there Sony!

Haha, me too.
Lord, people, if you didn't already have a PS2, then get a new one, and don't be surprised when we all look at you and wonder in amazement why you're at Joystiq if you didn't already have a PS2 years ago.
Personally I'm only annoyed that they're making a NEW PS2. There's already a new PS2. We don't need TWO new PS2s. That's stupid. It's a waste of time, money and effort on the part of Sony. They should be spending this time improving the goddamn PS3 so when I finally go out and buy one I won't feel like a sucker. Make the product something I'm PROUD to own.
Last generation, I was completely anti-Xbox. I adored my PS2. This generation? I'm ashamed to say I own a Sony computer, and I love my Xbox. If Sony could shape up, and stop hanging out in Douche-land with Disney (another company I used to love), I'd feel a lot better about spending my hard-earned cash on a PS3. But as it is, I really don't know why I should even get one currently. Every game I want to play is on Xbox and has achievements and Xbox live, which I really like. (I never played online on consoles until the 360.)
Until Kingdom Hearts 3 or [insert Final Fantasy game here] comes out, I'll still be happy that I didn't go with Sony.
I have no problem spending $500 or $600 or whatever on a console - if it truly is the best thing out there. It certainly is not, and it's mostly due to Sony repeatedly dropping the ball. They have everything at their disposal to have a fantastic gaming system, and to maybe even be top of the heap again.
But taking away backwards compatibility from a PS3 seriously makes me not want one anymore. My first-gen PS2 is dead in the water, and I don't make a habit of rebuying consoles I've already owned. My PS2's time was up. It lived a good life. I don't need a new one.
I wish Sony would keep the backward compatible crap as an option. Could it just be a software download? I'd pay some money to download it directly to a PS3. But just not having it at all is so retarded. I have more PS2 games than for any system I've ever owned, save for my 360. I want to be able to play those games still.

What's the point. There is nothing wrong with a PS2 slim. I guess Sony needs to make up profits somewhere.

I wonder if they removed PS1 backwards compatibility from this new model PS2? I might want to play FF7 again someday.

That's okay, you'd still be able to play it on the PS3 you're supposed to buy along with this new PS2.

I admit, I never had a PS2 (I was a broke high school teen then a broke college teen, what can you do?), but for $99 I'd gladly get me one and enjoy all the great games I missed.

A price drop would be long overdue, even though they have been selling at $129.
I'm not sure a redesign is needed, the slim model is really nice. If they are going to redesign, it would be cool to see built-in memory for game saves so you don't have to buy a memory card on top of the system. They could have 8 MB of built-in flash memory, and just one slot for memory cards to save space and cost.
I just wish we knew WHEN this is happening. I am returning my X360 in a couple days and will be without a system until I get something else. And I am leaning towards going back to PS2 for a while to play some games I missed. :-)

If they include Sony-brand wireless pads in the box (built in save memory would be a bonus, but not a dealbreaker), I will buy this thing the second it comes out. This sounds like the Sony system I've been clamoring for.

No matter how small you make it, the newer non-BC PS3 + this PS2 will still be bigger than the old BC PS3. Wake my up when they finally shrink the PS3.
