Anyway, I don't even know where to begin.

You were discounting Goldeneye because its story premise didn't sound original to you. That's why it wasn't a classic, or something? That is ridiculous. It was OBVIOUSLY not about the originality of the plot summary but about the gameplay advances it made for the genre.

Yes, Half Life 2 had plenty of great ways in which the story was told, but if I were to put it your way ("a scientist in a suit shooting aliens with guns") then it wouldn't sound very original either. The plot summary is generic, and again, it was all in the -way- it was told. But games are the sum of their parts, it doesn't matter.

And technical aspects of a game are suddenly a null point if that game is on the PC? WTF? You're going to have to explain that one.

And how the hell do you suddenly bring HL2 Ep 2 into the discussion? No, obviously that didn't do anything new. I don't know where I even mentioned it.

I'm sorry, but Halo made the genre mainstream? PC FPS games made the genre mainstream. Goldeneye (and Perfect Dark to a lesser extent) made the genre mainstream on consoles way before Halo even existed.

Seems to me that what will make Halo a classic is the impact it had on console multiplayer gaming. It's story and features may not have been wildly new, but the way it created an online culture was new and explosive. I think that will make it a classic.

Many people 20 years from now will fondly remember the hours they spent playing it instead of working - and then want to relive it.

I cant help but feel SquareEnix is in some way the reason that Super Mario RPG as well as various FF titles aren't being released yet.

Because they're all gonna be rereleased five times and then remade twice, duh.

I really wouldn't object to a SMRPG remake, though...

I'd also just about kill for a Smash Bros RPG...and I don't even like most RPGs!

Other than Galaxy, there has only been ONE traditional Mario platformer on the current console of the time. So it's not hard for ONE game to not live up to a previous game's standard.

I passed that point a looooooooooooong time ago.

How was mario All Stars a butchering? It had the exact same game play, only the skin was changed.

And call me crazy, but I prefered the 16 bit sprites with some illusion of depth over the 8 bit paper on paper sprites.
