had a friend try the guitar at bestbuy and said it felt great but didn't like how the buttons had an edge to it that made sliding up and down 'not smooth'. Even he said it might be something you just get used to and don't notice after a while, but he said he didn't like it as much as the new gh3 controller.

I hate the new GH3 controller, it feels unresponsive as hell when I strum, the PS3 version anyway. The PS2 guitar feels identical to the last two, to me at least.

I mean, I can't beat Through the Fire and Flames on my PS3, but it took me only two tries to do it on the PS2.

I agree with joystick the new Rock Band Guitar is WAY better than the GH3 guitar. The strum bar stands higher and you don't have to move it as far to get it to register. It makes playing the fast sections much more accurate and easy.

I'm guessing that these controller issues I keep hearing about are for the PS3 and 360 versions because the Wii and PS2 GHIII controllers have no problems whatsoever.

ColossalHat: must be a ps3 thing then. I find the 360 version to be superior to every other controller I've used (360 xplorer, several ps2 models). Everything about it is smoother. not sure what problems some have reported but I've got several friends with it and none have had nothing but great things to say about it.

@ megaStryke

One of my bosses here at work has the new GHIII guitar and has been talking about how the buttons or too loud (clicking) and that it doesn't always seem to register his notes. He also mentioned the how he can't play the guitar while seated because most positions cause the star power to go off as soon as he has enough stored up to do so.

Still didn't match up to the issues I had this weekend playing the guitar on the Xbox 360 version. I really didn't like that thing at all. I even got my finger nails stuck under the casing around the strum bar. Which is odd because I chew my nails...

I had the same exact problem at my Best buy. I had to actually rip back the paneling that the 360 was hidden in and re set up everything just to get it to work. And while I was doing that no one "working there" came to help/stop me from what looked like vandalizing. It was also hooked up in the back on the smallest TV set they had. Just horrible. The game must be really good because even in that horrible set up situation it still made me want to buy it, but the set up alone did kill my enthusiasm a little bit for the game. Someone from EA really needs to knock some heads in at Best Buy and tell them to set this thing up properly.

The guitar felt absolutely weightless to me, especially when compared to the new GHIII one.

I am trying to figure out how there could be such a huge discrepancy in something like weight...

I played the demo in 2 separate Best Buys this weekend. In one store the demo unit functioned perfectly. In the other store the guitar was broken and the yellow drum didn't work at all.

How the equpiment gets broken in such short order is a good question but I'm betting it has to do with over excited employees pre-opening.

Rock band is fun, the drums are pretty easy even on expert but I'm betting that all changes when the kick drum enters in the equation.

Looking forward to it.

Good to know that some demo stations out there have working guitars. The Rock Band guitar at my local Walmart was just unusable, most likely due to the abuse put on it by rascally kids...the drums were great, though.

Should have been here in Tallahassee. Ours has had a demo set up for at least a week. It was on a really small TV just like this post describes. The gear all worked though (well, I didn't try the mic).

I love the drums. The drums are fantastic. I want to make love to the drums. The mic... if you think for a second that I or anyone else I know will willingly sing karaoke then you would be sorely mistake. Hell, I don't think ANYONE will want to do vocals unless that person has no rhythm whatsoever or is a big SingStar nut. Honestly, though, they should just call this game Drum Hero. People will buy it just for the drums.

As for the guitar, it controller itself feels nice, but the guitar note sections don't have that same energy that Guitar Hero III has.

The point of games like Rock Band and Guitar Hero is to simulate a real rock experience. Shitty prepubescent screeching (or tone-deaf bellowing, whichever) sorta take you out of that experience. Karaoke is a NIGHTMARE.

As a drummer, I felt like the drum timing was off, but now that you say that it felt right on, I'm thinking maybe my Best Buy was negligent in video lag calibration, because it definitely felt like I needed to anticipate the "notes" before they crossed the line. Either way, the difference was small enough that I was able to have a blast on expert and am even more excited for the game than I was before. Also, I didn't test the guitar parts, as that would give me more of an indicator that it was indeed a video lag problem. Probably will go play again today!

Played the Rock Band game at Best Buy also.

The Drums didn't work, so that was disappointing, but the major disappointment was the Rock Band Guitar. It is flimsy and feels like it will break easily. The Buttons are horrid compared to GH and knock-off controllers, and the the square on-screen buttons are just annoying. The microphone plays like Karaoke Revolution, but you also occasionally need to hit the mike like a cow bell (yes, yes, more cow bell), and it seems to respond well enough.

They are supposed to get a replacement drum set this week, so hopefully I will get to try it, but overall I went from excited for Rock band to on the fence after playing the demo. If you can use the GH controllers with Rock Band, and the drums are as fun as the article says, I will probably pick it up, but as of right now, it is looking like I will not buy Rock Band ... :(

My local Wal-mart has had a Rockband demo since this past Friday. Granted it only has the guitar and the drums, sans pedal, and no microphone, but that doesn't stop anyone from having fun with it. Its setup on a PS3 and a 26" samsung LCD which is set at head height. Since you're only about two feet from the screen, its the perfect size.

Unfortunately, I 'll have to agree that the guitar feels rather flimsy. Its already broken after only a few days. The strum bar (which is admittedly quieter than the one on the GH3 guitar) is making multiple contacts making you miss notes and quickly getting a failed status. The drums still seem to be working fine though.

(BTW, there's also a rather unexciting Scene it! Demo on an X360, and a full version of Super Mario Galaxy on a playable Wii).

The guitar I played on at our local bestbuy felt cheep and light compared to the GHIII and GHIII guitars. I mean "flex in your hand with little effort" and "Wal-Mart toy guitar" cheap.

I really hope the strat that comes with the retail packaging feels better than that. At least I have a pair of GHII controllers that should work well.

I do have to say that the strat is larger and has the right ergonomics for an adult to play. Though the start button placement is suspect since I personally observed someone pull a Peter Moore twice while playing through a total of 3 songs.

The drumming is laughable. I got to play it when they first set it up and the drums not responding isn't something someone did to them, that's the way they are. Within the first song, every pad was responding randomly. If you hit too hard, you set off extra buttons. If you hit too light, it doesn't register at all. And even if you're hitting correctly, it still drops notes anyway.

And even so, I was getting 90% and up on Expert and I can guarantee you I'd be getting just as high even with the bass pedal in there. The game is just extremely easy.

Finally after about 10 songs, the yellow drum (the hi-hat's supposed to be on the OUTSIDE of the kit, not the second from the left), just broke entirely and stopped functioning. And I was still passing songs anyway.

People are so extremely fooled by the idea of ZOMG rock star! that they aren't even seeing the massive flaws of all of this. The drum charts are boring, give little to do and are on a level with MAYBE Drummania's middle level Basic charts. Yeah yeah, real cool to play Dani California or some other popular song but guess what? It's boring.

Totally agree here! The guitar is definately flimsy, I think it is because the guitar is longer or somthing but it feel off. After playing both I prefer the GHII guitar hands down and I also think that the songs are more challenging on GHIII. If you are all about Guitar go for GHIII, if drums and guitar float your boat then obviously go for rock Band, but prepare to pay the piper!

hahaha, it's good to know how unbelievably biased some of you guys are.

Seriously, Rock Band is very very easy. Go look up some Drummania videos. You guys need to face it. You're new to rhythm games and so you aren't very good at them. Very large amounts of people have been playing Drummania for a long time and to those of us, Rock Band is boring. The bass pedal does not add that much to the difficulty, unless you're mentioning how annoying it is to read the stupid bar they decided to use.

The general gaming public these days is ridiculous.

How can you even compare Drummania to Rock Band's drumming? Drummania, and Guitar Freaks, for that matter, are more interested in having hard notecharts that aren't very faithful to the original songs. Guitar Hero and Rock Band are more interested in a faithful reproduction of the song's actual notes, at least as accurate as you can get with five fret buttons and a strum bar, or four drum pads and a bass pedal.

Not to mention, there's the inevitable "cool factor" to be had for US music fans, getting to play some of their favorite songs, as opposed to relatively obscure (in the US at least) J-Pop and J-Rock.

hate to break it to you but you're completely wrong about Drummania. Not only does it perfectly follow the actual drum notes (uhhh why would you think that they don't?) but it's more realistic than Rock Band, considering DM actually has the hi-hat in the right place and actually has a full set.

so sorry. it's good to know that you know absolutely nothing about music gaming though!

It sounds like it’s about a 50/50 split on people that like rock band and people that don’t. My personal opinion is that a lot of people that don’t like it are comparing it to guitar hero and most likely are guitar hero fanboys and want rock band to fail. I played the drums and guitar at best buy and I had no problem with either of them. It took a few minutes to get used to the drums but once I did I was hitting them pretty good. The guitar felt good. I didn’t feel it was any more cheap feeling than guitar hero's guitar...What are you guys doing where you need stone-like durability in your guitar...You all realize that just because the titles of the games are rock band and guitar hero your not actually playing in a rock band and your not a guitar hero, right? I agree the guitar probably couldn’t take a beating to the stage floor but I don’t think the developers intended it to be used that way...

A few things.

1) the reason that the mike wasn't working (and I've seen it on a few best buy displays) is that they don't have an additional controller set up. They were apparently trying for using the mike as a controller, but something was up with that at the E for All Expo, and they had to add an extra controller to control the mike. Therefore, you can't enter unless you have a controller to control the mike's player. I told a BB employee about it, and while he didn't just give an apathetic response like I thought, he wasn't like 'oh! we'll have to try that!'

2. In wanted dead or alive, the beginning drum part is all the kick pedal. It plays better with that part, otherwise, the computer is just playing for the drummer. It's really a kick @$$ song.

3. @jsn: I don't know what your friend was talking about, but it slides a *lot* smoother than the gh controllers- so smooth, that it's easy to lose your place, and the solo buttons are insane to use if you don't truly know the song because of that.

I'll have it by early Dec, and be hosting a rock band party mid-Dec. I can't wait for all the blow... I mean hearty, wholesome, fun.

Played it this weekend at BB with my daughter. I thought the guitar was pretty cool. Some proficiency will be needed to flip the effects and hit those higher/solo buttons. It was comfortable and the option of using the GH3 controller is available for those who don't like it. My major gripe with guitar was the square buttons, it was hard to slide. Worse though is how the notes are displayed on the screen. Hammer ons/offs are barely distinguishable from normal notes. Worse than GH1 and 2. You'd think they'd learn how to handle their UI by now.

Drums were awesome. We had no problems playing and everything was spot on. We would fight it out each song on who go to play them. They were too much fun.

Sounds like your set up at Best Buy was exactly like ours here in Denver. A complete mess, noisy, small TV, no mic, no bass.

"Hopefully this doesn't happen too often in the game, because (at least from what we can tell) the game is supposed to be about being a band and everyone having fun. Sitting around spinning your drum sticks while your friends rock out ... not so much."

Surprise! Being in a band means taking artistic concessions and doing what sounds the best, not what will be the most fun for you personally. Ever tried being a bass player? Unless you're Geddy Lee or Flea chances are you're playing boring backing lines and never get to take solos, but that's your job in the band and it has to be done to sound good. Of course there are exceptions, but in real life (a shocking place let me tell you) not everyone can go balls to the wall 24/7. Without dynamics music gets jumbled and boring.
