One thing I hate about FFT is how you need to do a complex 2-step process to change facing directions at the end of turn and you can't take it back. With Disgaea, you can change them at will simply by holding down square. Much better tactically speaking.

I still like FFT more, but I've heard wonderful things about Disgaea.

If I weren't such a Level 5 fan, I would agree with them. Ah well. Jeanne still holds it's ground as one of the best SRPGS of all time.

this is too complicated for a pick-up and play game. though its protability is useful to complete the game anytime, anywhere. As long as you're not doing anything more important LOL

Way too many SRPGs coming out. I want a regular ol' RPG without all the tactical grid battles. I got Brave Story already so I'm just desparately waiting for Crisis Core.

Awesome review. Hit on all the points I was most curious about and a few I hadn't thought of. I was wondering whether this would be worth picking up now that I'm finishing FF Tactics. Looks like I'll need to visit the game store this week.
And as far as I'm concerned, keep the SRPGs coming on the PSP! Though I don't think there are any other scheduled at the moment, are there?

You, sir, are an idiot.

Save game after every level? The original PS2 version had this anyway, what I'd like to know is can you save after each level inside an item? With the original, if you took your time to steal or get tile combos for the bonus items, it could be hours before you had a chance to save if you had no 'Gency's Exit' (assuming you survived a whole 10 levels)

I enjoyed the item collection in Disgaea compared to monotonous farming like FFXII or Monster Hunter but it would be good if the PSP version lets you enter an item and reap the rewards without needing to schedule enough time to reach level 10/20/30 etc.

To Akamaru: You're right. Although I love SRPGs, I'm itching for another decent turn-based regular RPG as well.

To Snailking: You sir, are indeed an idiot. But, Warhammer 40000's coming soon, and it doesn't have anime or big-headed characters.

It's possible to be attached to grim-looking characters in an SRPG without (i) saying "Ugh" to anime fans or (ii) being an idiot. I can be sensitive to the levels of irony and perversity at work in a brilliant superficially cute-looking game while longing for the look of Nocturne to scratch a certain morbid itch.

I rather wish Atlus would release DDS 1 for the PSP, since the game's OOP and ebay vultures are bleeding addicts for obscene and inhumane profit.

I must say, i've played both FFT and Disgaea on both of their original systems.. as stated, FFT loses a little bit due to the slight lag of some casting, and most battles were 5v5+. Disgaea puts you easily into battles of 10vs10+, animates the combat as wonderfully as it did on the PSP.

I don't know what happened with Dragoneer aria, but NIS really hit the spot with Disgaea -- it should serve as a checkpoint for quality in PSP games. Granted, as time goes on the games are getting better and better, this game raised the bar on performance. It would be just awesome if NIS would take this opportunity to perhaps make a team devoted to porting their other games to PSP. I've never had a chance to play through Disgaea 2 or Makai Kingdom.

One thing to note - NO you can NOT save between levels in item world. BUT you can just put your PSP in sleep mode at any time... so i guess that is "saving" enough instead of slaving yourself to a TV for hours.

I've been playing this when i have time to breath during work, and i've noticed -- this game doesn't seem to work the PSP(original model) as hard as FFT seems to. I can leave work with about 40% battery power at the end of the day, where FFT would place me at about 20%. And i've gotten 99hrs in FFT.

I made fun of the PSP for years.. but FFT and this game are worth getting the system, in my opinion... though i still carry my DS everywhere.

This game alone has justified my purchase of a PSP. I have a pile of other games (FFT, Wipeout Pure, Brave Story and so on) and none has had nearly as much attention as Disgaea. It's on my short list of "tactical RPGs I have played," but it sits on top.

I'd have loved to seen the camera controls changed for the PSP. If I remember right, FFT on the PS1 had tilt (two angles), zoom (two levels) and rotate (four corners? can't remmeber). Disgaea only ever had the rotation. It badly needs the other pieces of the camera-jockeying picture.
