If you're not keen to engage in the sort of modern warfare that comes from navigating shopping aisles during the holiday months, you now have the option of downloading Infinity Ward's latest thrill-a-minute first-person shooter, Call of Duty 4, from Steam. It amounts to roughly 360 thrills, excluding any thrills experienced during hectic multiplayer shootouts!
Modern Warfare is already available for pre-purchase at $49.95 before its digitally distributed November 12 launch.

Nice. Steam download.... But I thought all PC Gamers downloaded their games from torrent sites.... I mean, I dont know a single PC Gamer that has ever bought a freaking game.
I guess they are all out of money from having to buy a new video card every 3 months.

Honestly half the games you can pirate requiring so much time downloading them over a dozen hours, patching and cracking them, then half of them you can't even play online due to crack checks or buggy hacks, etc...
It's honestly not worth it.
Oh yeah also once you have a full time job in the "real world" games don't seem so expensive.
Until you move out, then get engaged, then are tallying wedding costs.
Er... anyone have a good torrent site? haha

WiNG, even recent games are easily cracked and downloaded. Given you have a good torrent site, you could probably download, extract, and patch a game faster than you could buy and download it off of Steam.
My rule for buying games is I don't buy it if I'm not going to get at least 30 hours of gameplay out of it (i.e. incredibly replayable or multiplayer games). For example, as great a game as FEAR is I'd never buy it. And I'll admit, I've downloaded games that I wasn't going to buy. The way I see it, I wasn't going to buy the game anyways, so they didn't lose any money. Normally I'd rent, but nobody offers PC game rentals locally. Games like Half-Life 2 are games that I'll purchase.

I've bought neither, but either would count regardless. Besides, the Zuma demo on Steam kicked ass. I'd count it a worthwhile purchase if other games didn't demand my time.
Don't get jealous because the PC has more games than the XBLA or PSN ever will. Boring as it may seem, Solitare and Minesweeper have enjoyed more adherents than even the Wii could dream of.

I buy my games too. Online on pirated games is usually non-existent to lackluster and a big ass hassle.
Also, the buying a new video card every 3 months thing has got to stop. Even if you had a 30" monitor at 2560x1600 playing everything at max an 8800GTX would still last you at least 4 months... 5 if you run them in SLI =).

Trust me, that isn't true in the US. The Steam servers are much faster, but they aren't free. However, they do cater to laziness and as iTunes has found out...that's a better way to reduce piracy than many methods.

Wow, the "my pc-ween is bigger than your console-ween" babble never gets old. Maybe some of us have both/prefer one or the other? I used to be a very avid pc gamer and was recently contemplating getting another gaming rig together, but this attitude pops up in some many arguments that it turns me away every time. And I don't give a shit that you've got tighter control with a kb/m.

Good for you chuckles, because I don't care if you can kick back with a controller w/ auto aim. The irony though, is that you just took part in the console vs. PC sniping with that statement. Is your "ween" bigger for it?

Nice job ignoring the rest of the comment, moran. I just wanted to state what I guess is the obvious, that this is about Steam delivery which is about serving up games. Yes you can download all the furry rape-simulators you want Borland, but really, how many do you need?

"Furry rape simulator" indeed. Besides, everyone knows that the best rape simulators use tentacles.

Or I could buy it for the same price and receive a retail package and a physical copy of the game for easy reinstallation. Oh, and I wouldn't need Steam open every time I wanted to play it. I really don't see the appeal of buying games for the same price on Steam. I have a pretty fast internet connection, but not faster than the 15 minutes it takes me to go to a store, buy it, and come home. Guess I've always been a fan of actually getting a tangible object for my money regardless if it delivers the same thing in the end.
I really wish they'd change Steam so you could play the games without always needing Steam running. I just don't like having any applications that aren't really necessary hogging my memory. As it is right now, the only time I use Steam is for games that I can't play otherwise (CS: Source, Half-Life 2, GMod).

I used to be as well. Then I realized that Steam lets me download games I've purchased as many times as I'd like and back it up. The DRM is a turn off, but as you say, it's so easily cracked that I'm not worried about it.
When I wanted to play HL2 again, I simply downloaded the game once more. And though I was a bit of a prick in my reply to F. Rocker, I'd switch to consoles only in a heartbeat: If only they gave me freedom of choice in my control scheme.
I'm a hypocrite when it comes to consoles though; except for small games, I prefer physical media too.

Borland: This is your only reason to not buy a console? I'll totally admit to frustration with the 360 version of COD4 in that I couldn't customize my buttons. Isn't it just a rewritable .cfg file that would need to be included in the code?
I would have sworn I'd played a console game that you could arrange the buttons any way you saw fit, but I can't remember it's name.

@skull: I have a console, but I would switch to console only gaming if they gave me a kb/m. Certain games, like FPS and RTS games, benefit from a more complicated control scheme than a gamepad.
Similarly, sports games, RPGs, Fighting, Platform, and others work better with a simplified controller scheme. Obviously, a crap ton of people playing Halo don't agree with my opinion. But I'd like the choice.
And it doesn't have to negate "laid back" either...splitfish came up with a hack that looks like a good compromise. Too bad the FragFx is cheaply made.

When I first got into console gaming, actually right around when HL2 came out, I was immensely annoyed at the auto-aiming/lack of accuracy.
I bought one of the newly available kb/m adapters for the ps2 to play with several friends from work. The big issue there is that lateral motion in consoles is controlled via the velocity sensitive sticks, versus the awsd of a keyboard. So when I would want to move slowly, it was impossible.
So I adapted eventually. I recently played through Portal on both the 360 and the pc, the speed of accurate mouse work made me sniff a little.

That's the stupidest argument ever. If everybody had that mind set the game industry would turn into the music industry. If you want to try a game that you weren't going to buy download the DEMO. If the game doesn't have a DEMO then it probably isn't worth buying anyways.

ScreamingSkull, I was pretty upset when I found out Call of Duty 4 didn't let me do a custom button layout on 360. It's very difficult to hop back and forth between Orange Box, Call of Duty 4, and Halo 3. They're similar enough to confuse me. Luckily Orange Box is customizable, so I was able to map reloading to match Halo 3. But sprint is left bumped in Orange Box and stuck at clicking in the left thumbstick in Call of Duty 4. So in intense sequences in CoD4, I find myself hitting left bumper trying to sprint away, only realizing that the bumper is for flashbangs, causing me to blind myself and usually get picked off. I really wish we could have custom controls, from a developer standpoint it would be a piece of cake to add.
Kangstarr, I actually purchase a lot of games. For consoles I rent the games I want to play but don't consider worth buying because that's an option available to me. But I can't rent for PC. There are some titles that I want to play, but would never purchase and can't rent. If I download a game that I wouldn't have purchased in the first place, the only thing that changes is one more person has played that game. Same goes for music. I never purchased music and never plan to. The only thing that's changed is that bands that I never would've heard of before now have a new fan and person to pay to go to their concerts.

Why the hell is it the same price as a retail copy?
This is why people who say digital distribution will lower prices are idiots.

I really like steam, it's very convenient, especially if you have multiple computers. I always know that I will have access to my games wherever I am. Plus, I can't lose the physical version if it's digital.
BUT...
FOR THE UK THEY'RE CHARGING $70!!!!!!!!
DO THEY THINK WE ARE ALL RICH AND HAVE TOO MUCH MONEY?!

Yes, sadly it is indeed normal to be overcharged here. I'm perhaps exaggerating since $70 is £35 which is RRP for most games (although it's £30 for CoD4 on amazon.co.uk...)
I'm mainly upset because for UK users Steam has been a really great deal so far, because all the prices are in USD which makes it comparatively cheap. Orange Box etc all cost the same price as Americans pay. It's therefore a shock to see a different local price for Call of Duty 4!

I really only pirate half-assed games or games that I know I'll play through once and never look at again. For example:
Must Buys:
Orange Box (Especially for the multiplayer damn)
Unreal 3
Must Pirate:
NFS: Pro Street
Hellgate: London

Kangstarr: The problem is, dropping $50 for a game that may or may not appeal to you is ridiculous and I refuse to do it. If there is a demo, great. Then I'd agree with you.
Your suggestion however that a game that doesn't release a demo is a bad game is pure fabrication.
So while it's true that sales do suffer from piracy, and this is bad, it is simultaneously true that -- on a case by case basis -- it may be morally defensible to download an 'evaluation' copy for yourself, pirated or not.
