Gray Fox ninjas his way into Super Smash Bros. Brawl
When Solid Snake brings his gravelly verbosity to Super Smash Bros. Brawl, it seems he won't be the only Metal Gear Solid character doing battle with Mario and Sonic. The game's official blog revealed today that the OCN (Original Cyborg Ninja) "Gray Fox" will be appearing in the game as an assist trophy.
While we're disappointed he's not playable, we love the way his contribution is described on the blog, which could go down in history as the most straight-forward ninja explanation ever: "He approaches stealthily with lithe jumps, coming right in then slicing repeatedly." ... Yep, that sounds about right.

I think I speak for MGS fans everywhere when I say, "That's fucking AWESOME!"
FOXHOUND @ Nov 7th 2007 10:13AM
+1 ... MGS Fan™-approved. :]
NaeemTHM @ Nov 7th 2007 10:51AM
Holy Moo. Nintendo is doing such a HUGE fan service here. I wouldn't be surprised if Mega Man, Santa Claus, and Jesus were announced.
rv @ Nov 7th 2007 11:27AM
They should just start announcing who won't be in the game.
JodyAnthony @ Nov 7th 2007 10:06AM
awesome! Would have made a cool playable character though
samfish @ Nov 7th 2007 10:11AM
I'll bet money that he's playable/unlockable, judging by what Sakurai said on the site.
Skippy @ Nov 7th 2007 10:21AM
I'll take that bet, samfish. There's no way they are going to have a playable character from the MGS series besides Snake. That's like saying they're going to put Knuckles in there just so Sonic doesn't feel alone.
XanthouS @ Nov 7th 2007 10:31AM
Uhh...they added TWO additional characters from the Kirby universe.
But I agree, as much as I would absolutely LOVE to play as Gray Fox, he won't be playable.
Zertoss @ Nov 7th 2007 10:10AM
Dammit, when are they going to announce the Weighted Companion Cube?!
baby sea tuna @ Nov 7th 2007 10:13AM
Maybe you shouldn't have euthanized it!
FOXHOUND @ Nov 7th 2007 10:16AM
Valve should sell that radio on their site.
XanthouS @ Nov 7th 2007 10:32AM
You called? =]
michas_pi @ Nov 7th 2007 10:39AM
The Weighted Companion Cube is a poor character since it will never stab anyone.
Cesaria @ Nov 7th 2007 12:02PM
I vote L-block's inclusion.
FOXHOUND @ Nov 7th 2007 10:14AM
See, delaying a game for extra shiz like this is ALWAYS welcomed. Take note of this, developers... because this game is truly a system seller.
F. Rocker or Fernando R.? @ Nov 7th 2007 10:16AM
"A delayed game is delayed until its released. A bad game will be bad forever"
Shigueru Miyamoto
deaftly @ Nov 7th 2007 10:33AM
@Fernando, why would you want to quote that Captain Obvious remark by Miyamoto? Thats like saying the sky is blue, its not some epic words from a god. Sorry to burst your bubble.
flameofdoom666 @ Nov 7th 2007 10:38AM
Thats not how he said it. Shigeru Miyamoto said, "A delayed game is eventually good, a bad game is bad forever."
F. Rocker or Fernando R.? @ Nov 7th 2007 10:39AM
So, do you want that I repeat other quotes, like "Rumble is last gen", "get a second job" "giant enemy crab" attack his weak for massive damage"
or fanboys quotes: "just wait until lair... just wait until Heavenly... just wait until Ratchet (just 40,000 sales last week), just wait until its $399... just wait until Uncharted"
I think its better the quote from Miyamoto.
David @ Nov 7th 2007 10:43AM
Looks like a Wii is on my shopping list this Christmas.
... AGAIN.
WiNG @ Nov 7th 2007 11:03AM
Based on the reasoning in the Smash post, this pretty much guarantees that Sonic's buddies will be Assist Trophies in this game.
Shadow Hog @ Nov 7th 2007 11:42AM
I think Tails was already confirmed to have been seen at E For All, although I haven't seen any screens or movies or anything. Gist of it is that if you fall off the stage, he flies you back up instead of you losing a life, a la Marble Garden 2's boss.
Cal @ Nov 7th 2007 2:25PM
I believe that was just Paratroopa. Some people mistook him for Tails. And it wouldn't make any sense to show something that big without even announcing it beforehand.
Mr Khan @ Nov 7th 2007 4:12PM
As long as one of those assist trophies is Knuckles
Count Noobula @ Nov 7th 2007 11:18AM
I'll say this again: I want Simon Belmont, Mega Man, Sabin (final Fantasy VI), and Captain N The Game Master.
SoulBlade @ Nov 7th 2007 11:39AM
dude if you're pulling in Square characters... I want Crono.
3cubed minus 3squared plus1 @ Nov 7th 2007 11:48AM
And Geno.
Or does he count as a Nintendo character?
Blast Processing Megadrive @ Nov 7th 2007 12:02PM
Geno is owned by Square.
Good suggestions, though.
zero @ Nov 7th 2007 11:33AM
I know this comment is going to get Buried Into Oblivion©, but I just wanted to say this about Brawl: Too many characters, not enough fun
Geist @ Nov 7th 2007 11:40AM
Must be nice having a finished copy of the game before it's even completed.
SoulBlade @ Nov 7th 2007 11:42AM
Why isn't it enough fun? Game looks fun as hell! (Not burying you)
zero @ Nov 7th 2007 12:58PM
Geist: Yes it is nice. Actually everyone who owns a Game Cube already has a copy, it's called Super Smash Bros. Melee.
SoulBlade: I'm not a huge fan of any of the Smash Bros. games. Yes I've played them for more than ten seconds. Yes I've played with three other people. I've gone out of my way to get the "best experience" and it just doesn't do it for me. It just seems that every time a new character is added to the roster, everyone gets moist. There comes a point where if you have too many characters, you can't develop and refine them as much as possible(Final Fantasy VI is a good example of this.)
Zertoss @ Nov 7th 2007 2:54PM
Why would they need to develop the characters? The characters are already developed in their respective games.
Me @ Nov 7th 2007 4:18PM
True, this isn't an RPG, its a simple (well not that simple really) fighting game...
Geist @ Nov 7th 2007 9:13PM
I see your point about Brawl/Melee, but there's a lot more to this game. I mean, the basic play mechanics are the same around, but I'm definitely looking forward to Final-Smashing my friends into Oblivion© and having Gray Fox slice'n'dice.
Plus, the multitude of characters, I find, is much better, since it means everyone who plays the game can find someone they like and play with them. Just as long as they don't dredge the bottom of the barrel (I question the addition of King Dedede, for example...)
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Nov 7th 2007 11:43AM
Goddammit NIntendo. It's like when you think the game can't get any better, BAMMMMM!!!!! Nintendo fucking surprises you again.
SoulBlade @ Nov 7th 2007 11:51AM
And the awesome part is there's a part of everyone who thinks there's more to come...
Shockgamer @ Nov 7th 2007 12:17PM
I stood up and raised my fists into the air.
Then I read "assist trophy,"
Then I sat back down and said, "Oh, that's nice..."
Foxwind @ Nov 7th 2007 1:13PM
That sounds surprisingly like my reaction. "Oh, okay. Cool. So what other news is there?"
Poisoned Al @ Nov 7th 2007 1:33PM
Unless they put the Weighted Companion Cube into that bloody game I don't really care. Why don't they post the mile long list of characters that will in the game and have done with?
Oh wait, that would mean there wouldn't be posts in forums and gaming blogs EVERY FIVE BLOODY MINUTES, hyping one of a handful of Wii games anyone gives two shits about now would there?
Geist @ Nov 7th 2007 9:15PM
We get it, you don't like the game. But I still love how they're trickling out information. It keeps a balance between releasing everything and have people go "OH MAN SO MUCH but we want more!" to people completely forgetting entirely.
Poisoned Al @ Nov 8th 2007 2:47AM
No, I don't like stupid hype machines you cock-sucking fanboy!
James @ Nov 7th 2007 1:58PM
Looks like someone didn't read what the Melee pros said about the Brawl-
http://gamernode.com/interviews/4842-the-competitive-brawl-hugs-and-gimpy-weigh-in-on-super-smash-bros-brawl/index.html
"The one thing that I cannot stress enough is this: Super Smash Bros. Brawl is NOT Super Smash Bros. Melee 2."
So it isn't like Melee 2. Read the link and they go on about how it's more based on aerial combat, has different physics altogether and slowed down game speed.
Or will this (cue emo side) "get buried into oblivion" ;) sorry to piss on your fire...
James @ Nov 7th 2007 1:59PM
grrr reply broke, this was to Zero a few posts up.
ColossalHat @ Nov 7th 2007 2:18PM
Aerial combat? Bleh, I dislike most games that focus on that crap. Seeing as how the point of SSB is to knock the opponent off the screen, I see this as an attempt to make that goal easier. Besides, how the hell could Bowser and Donkey Kong have even half a chance against King Dedede in the air? That mofo can fly!
ColossalHat @ Nov 7th 2007 2:14PM
They should quit announcing assist trophies, it's extremely misleading when you're not fully awake.
Sieged Eagle @ Nov 7th 2007 2:46PM
Nice. It's good to see that Snake won't be alone on this game, even though his companion will be an assist trophy but it's still nice news to hear. Now we only need Ryu from Street Fighter or Megaman and this will be the game that in other words, will be the epithome of epicness.
Come on! Confirm any of those two already for God's sake!
vgxtremist @ Nov 7th 2007 8:27PM
It would be awesome to see Square characters, though I'm not talking about Cloud/Sephy, but Frog and Crono would be too badass.
muppetmeth @ Nov 7th 2007 9:01PM
It'd be cool if Metal Gear was a weapon and you could stomp on him, leaving a bloody trail.
T-4 @ Nov 8th 2007 8:13PM
I can't believe you called Gray Fox the Original Cyborg Ninja. Have you ever played Mortal Kombat?
