Its kind of sad that being at work on Wednesday's is bearable because I know I'll get a dose of Yahtzee talking shit about some game.

My favorite part about Yahtzee's reviews is that his final judgment ranges from "not entirely a pit stain" to "Jesus bloody Christ, scoop my eyes out with rusty golf cleats".

His analysis about sailing was totally wrong.

Sailing takes a lot less time now, the shooting is fun and there are warp points to make travel even faster, although sometimes the touch screen has trouble registering certain warp symbols.

But he was totally right about that stupid temple. Stealth sucks.

Once you get the bow the stealth element is pretty minimal. Just run out, let them see you, goto a safe zone shoot the fucker in the back, run off. Then when you get the Master Sword you can do the same thing but instead of pussy footing around and stunning them with an arrow in the back you can kill the stupid fuckers. It becomes even easier when you get the scroll that gives you the crazy speedy sword spin because then you can just sword spin and run right into their asses.

The sailing does take less time, but there's less to do, so it is a waiting game, if it weren't for stuff popping up. I on the other hand had no trouble drawing on my slate.

But it was just fun to wander around. I think the main problem was that the locations were not very memorable. I think the snow island was my favourite.

I agree on the stealth parts as well. The rest of the game is spot on terrific, but then I have to go back to that damn temple and I feel like cutting my nostrils just because it is the better option.

I almost want to be mad about some of his points (like the idea that Nintendo gets away with releasing countless sequels when others wouldn't-Square, anyone?), but I don't see a point. You could hand him Super Mario 3 and he'd find ways to insult it, because no one watches these for the compliments. They want to hear him rip some game apart.

Still, entertaining.

Yes square releases many final fantasy games, but most of them seem to at least try to differentiate in the battle system, story, characters, and leveling up. I counldn't say the same for Zelda games, or to a greater extent, most Nintendo games. Not saying their not enjoyable to play, though.

If you're talking about the main FF series, the comparison really doesn't work. If anything, the main complaint people have about FF sequels is that they're too *different* from their predecessors.

If you're talking about the endless milking of properties like FFVII, then yes, it is annoying and it does cheapen the franchise. But that's a whole other complaint - the spinoffs are still completely different from each other in terms of gameplay and story.

I've just gone and copypasted this so sorry if you've seen it before.

People saying that every Zelda game is the same or something are completely full of shit.

I mean I'm willing to concede Twilight Princess because that game was essentially fanservice. It was the whole goddamn point of the game to be OoT 2. Ok, it did have the whole wolf thing, and it had loads of fun stuff new to the Zelda series such as the remote-control wand to control the stone statues (which I felt had WAY more potential than they actually used), the huge fucking ball and chain, and the dual hookshot which was awesome, and it was the first to use motion controls, but nevermind. Sure. It's a pretty looking OoT.

But the rest?
-Adventure of Link speaks for itself.
-Link to the Past basically introduced the whole item puzzle based gameplay, which the previous two lacked.
-Ocarina was obviously a huge 3D transition like Mario 64 was for the Mario franchise.
-Majora's Mask needs absolutely no explanation.
-Wind Waker just got rid of the whole land travel thing altogether and introduced a vast sea with ship combat among other things, not to mention the visual style was an extremely bold move.
-And now we've got a completely stylus based game with all sorts of elements that make it, once again, feel entirely fresh.

If you say Zelda games are all the same, you're either trolling or you don't have a clue what you're talking about.

"BUT BUT BM THE GAMES ALL HAVE ZELDA AND LINK IN THEM THAT MUST MEAN THEYRE THE SAME GAME WAAHHH WAHHH WAHHHHHHHHH" The games are called Zelda, get over it. There is NO fucking comparison to the sameness of 99.9% of all other fucking game series. Calling this one out on it is pure unadulterated fanboy bullshit.

Enlighten us then BM, what is the real difference in story between them all? Every game has a Hero of "insert game's theme here", they all have the Master Sword, all of em have bombs, boomerangs, and shields, and let's not forget some foolish princess who, despite certain supernatural powers in some games, can't avoid being kidnapped.

The only differences are the gimmicks: a new weapon here, a different mode of travel there, or a transformation/alternate world. In reality, the game has not changed one damn bit. The lack of an even half-developed story defeats the purpose of making sequels.

The difference between Zelda and the Final Fantasy series is that FF has a story in all but the first game. The story, while based on the same theme for about the first four games, has changed and become more complex over time. The combat system has seen about 3, 4 if you count tactics, iterations, and until FFX-2 the only characters that made multiple appearances were Cid, Biggs, and Wedge.

Now, LoZ is a game based on puzzles and the use of your items to solve these puzzles. When nearly every game in the series has the same items it defeats the purpose of having them, as you've solved the puzzle half a dozen times before in previous games.

Video is loading now.

I'm normally a Zelda fan, they're the very essence of adventure games blahblah. But I couldn't get into PH. Not because of the controls, but the layout design with the hexagonal raised land just put me off. I'm playing through the Oracle games for the first time now and I'm having a lot more fun with these.

Okami is pretty boring for the first few hours. But by the time you've logged about 10 hours, the game just rips itself open and becomes an absolute blast to play.
I would go back and stick with it, if I were you. It's very, very rewarding like that.

He is absolutely right on every point. Just, playing zelda is a bit nostalgic. Halo gives no such experience... Yet.

Not saying I like halo. but I like zelda. and I still agree with him, they are releasing the same game over and over with better graphics, and a slightly new twist.

I beat this recently amidst the flood of other games I've been playing...

Didn't read this guy's review, but I had beef with it just in terms of moving around - it took some time to get used to moving w/ just the stylus. I thought the rest of the game was awesome though.

Didn't play Okami to compare it against.. plan to get it when it hits the Wii.

I agree with him about the Temple of the Ocean King, not because of the stealth (i liked that) but because you had to go through all the rooms every time (until you got to the sixth floor and set that warp point). My disagreement was that i liked the sailing, in both this and WindWaker

Still hilarious as always, especially the part about his organs jumping ship to escape humiliation

The complaints about Zelda's story telling are very fair. The Zelda games have always been awful in this regard, Twilight Princess being the worst of the lot (wtf was going on in that game?). It would be nice to see Nintendo address this at some point.

He doesn't give the gameplay a fair shake though, as the stylus control in Phantom Hourglass is (surprisingly) satisfying.

I also think the sailing is overly maligned. I didn't really find riding a horse around the giant maps of the other Zelda games that much more stimulating.

TP had the potential to have the best story out of the series, but they left a few holes (like the significance of the Oocca, something they only alluded to a few times) and the whole concept of the Shadow Tribe really should've been fleshed out

...sadly, however, that's not saying much. If it's anywhere the Zelda games are weak, it's in the story telling department.

Only one (that I know of) other game used the stamping.
Was a nice small surprise to see that.

And also (general) the stealth isn't necessary in the end/final runs.
So it's like a small part of a big nifty puzzle, with at some levels multiple ways to reach the next floors.

As an official ambassador of the Nintendo Defense Force, I would like to say that I agree with everything he has said EVER except for finally one small point.

He says that Nintendo is the only company that we let get away with this nonsense. I beg to differ. We (not including me) let every single developer in the world get away with it. Find me a sequel and I'll show you a (game name) 1.5 with upgraded graphics, one new weapon, and nothing new. I'd even say this is what Valve did with Half-Life 1 and 2, and that's one of my favorite games of all time! It's been going on forever, including the lack of changes from Pac-Man to Ms. Pac-Man to the Halo 1, 1.3, and now Halo 1.7 that was just released with zillions of sales. And on the other hand, we have Square-Enix, who doesn't even make new games, but remakes a couple per year.

The people who make games, the people who play games, and the people who review games... do not want change. They want the same crap over and over. It's what makes developers money, because gamers will keep paying for the same shit over and over, and reviewers will keep praising the same shit over and over. The problem is industry-wide.

Thank you for mentioning it Yahtzee, but Nintendo is definitely not alone. They're just the only developer to be this successful for this long, so they have a longer history of this problem. The most hyped games right now are Super Mario Galaxy, Halo 3, FF13, MGS4, CoD4, Smash Bros. Brawl, Guitar Hero 3, and GTA4. Games without numbers don't stand a chance.

And whenever developers can't think of ways to keep milking their franchises, they bring old ones back from the dead. We're finally getting a new Rygar, a Contra 4, and a new Bionic Commando? These developers are raping our childhoods for truckloads of money, and we're happy to fork it over.

And my hands aren't clean either. When Contra 4 comes out, I'll be first in line!

That about sums it up

Sequelitis is all over the industry, sure you get original IPs like Zack and Wiki, Folklore, and Mass Effect, but they get buried by Super Mario Galaxy, Metal Gear Solid 4, and Halo 3

That's just the state of things. And with the notable exceptions of Mario Party, the main series Pokemon games, and Fire Emblem, Nintendo usually keeps things fresh between sequels, as do many developers
