Call of Duty 4's Xbox 360 vs. PS3 comparison video
What we can say is that the video above does show that we're finally starting to hit a better balance point between the Xbox 360 and PlayStation. This is a far cry from the Madden '08 comparison video where the differences were pretty clear even in an internet quality video. We'll take this as a good sign that we're moving away from having obvious performance differences and gamers can choose their multiplatform games based on controller preference and (if important) online experience.

Worse textures?
Ian @ Nov 8th 2007 9:27PM
Wrong topic, bud.
joshb @ Nov 12th 2007 2:42AM
i hope you guys are kidding about no difference. there are huge differences. look at the sunroof, on the beginning, the 360 has more variations and more contrast. on the "bog" stage, the big ass smoke on the left, is dull with no texture on the ps3 and on the 360 is lumped up like smoke from an explosion. all throughout the video. if you pause when they are on the same frame, the 360 clearly has more contrast on doesn't look as washed out and dark as the ps3 version. this is just a matter of preference. but i like contrast and saturation because it gives it a filmy look. the ps3 looks washed out with no contrast. please pay attention to the video. and pause it to study the difference. thank you
LaughingTarget @ Nov 8th 2007 3:35PM
Hmm, absolutely no difference. If I didn't have a monster PC, I'd have gone 360 for the better controller, though the PS3 would have been less noisy.
DangerMouse @ Nov 8th 2007 4:22PM
This game was playable on my 5 year old PC with settings on normal @ 1680x1050. They played it safe so all systems would be very similar. The comparisons video's, in my opinion, are worthless. This isn't crysis we're talking about, here.
DangerMouse @ Nov 8th 2007 4:24PM
Sorry, my post wasn't aimed at your post, LaughingTarget.
Jeff @ Nov 8th 2007 3:35PM
Neither look as good as PC anyway.
Shagittarius @ Nov 8th 2007 3:48PM
Yeah I want to see the compaison to the PC version.
JJ @ Nov 8th 2007 3:36PM
OMG... how DARE they make an equally good game on both systems (and dont short change consumers).... how dare they!
NaeemTHM @ Nov 8th 2007 3:41PM
Remember the days when every game released for the PS2 and Xbox was better on Xbox? The graphics were far superior and there was usually an extra level or some kinda extra content thrown in.
And yet the PS2 crushed the xbox like an ant. Go figure...
My point is that is really doesn't matter which system has the better graphics or more unlockable stuff. It's the install base. The system in more homes will always win.
borland502 (SDF - Macross Ring) @ Nov 8th 2007 3:48PM
Fair enough Naeem. The spiffy hard drive feature didn't save it either. Still, for certain games it was the only system in town.
WMain00 @ Nov 8th 2007 4:08PM
@Naeem. Indeed. Thank god there are more xbox's in peoples homes now, eh?

ShortFuse @ Nov 8th 2007 3:37PM
PS3 has slightly better textures and a slightly different hue (developers confirmed this). It's good though. The difference is neglible. This means the PS3 has finally caught up to the 360 in visuals.
Pureshooter @ Nov 8th 2007 3:47PM
Only when Infinity Ward is the developer. They may have confirmed a different hue, but not better textures.
arrrgh @ Nov 8th 2007 3:57PM
You can NOTICE the different hue. If anyone can NOTICE a texture difference, they need a medal..or a life
Ranus Studios @ Nov 8th 2007 4:33PM
I think I caught one slightly higher-res texture on the PS3 when he was climbing a ladder. I think.
Suffice it to say I will not be buying this on either system, for I am already prepared to spend too much money on other games. If I do, it'll probably be on the 360. Controller's comfier.
Ihar `Philips` Filipau @ Nov 8th 2007 4:47PM
> If anyone can NOTICE a texture difference, they need a medal..or a life
Difference in textures is pretty apparent. First what looks very different - is glass in car. After that it all looks different. Can't say what's better - even HD version isn't sufficient for that.
Difference in lighting is also very apparent. Hardly can say what's better: Xbox360 shadows looks sharper, on PS3 were more smaller shadows - but also less glitter.
Subjective perception: PS3 is better. (Disclaimer: PC/Wii gamer.)
But again, video compression - even on HD file - made the whole discussion moot.
colin @ Nov 8th 2007 11:04PM
check the rain out ... xbox has it hands down ... better color, framerate, depth of field
ill trooper @ Nov 9th 2007 2:41AM
I own both (friends on PS3 to play with, achievements and other friends on the 360) and after comparing both on two seperate TVs, the PS3 one looks ever-so-slightly better, with a crisper over-all feel, while the 360 is mildly duller. Are the slightly better visuals worth not having rumble (yet) and missing out on a larger installed base of players to go up against in online multiplayer? I can't answer that for you, but that's also the fanboy way to look at things. The reality is some people just own one of the systems, they're not buying the other anytime soon, and they just want a good game on what they own. And that's what this game is: excellent on both platforms.
colin @ Nov 9th 2007 5:09AM
i don't believe you trooper, GT?
ill trooper @ Nov 9th 2007 11:00AM
Colin: "GT" ? Something on your mind that was just too long to type out?
Heh heh. Why would I make that up? I was as curious as anyone reading this thread, and I owned both. So my friend and I did a/b tests for 30 minutes like nerds. And that is what we determined. Minimal graphic advantage: PS3.

Wyvernlink @ Nov 8th 2007 3:39PM
I think that the PS3 was slightly better at the darker spots but the 360 was better in the lighter ones, of course I could be imagining the differences.
rv @ Nov 8th 2007 3:43PM
The only noticeable difference I saw was that the gun in the second looked a little better on the 360. Thats it, its pretty much the same otherwise.
ncxcstud @ Nov 8th 2007 3:43PM
Both looked great.
I'm glad a developer finally did their job and didn't make excuses...
And I'm a 360 owner :)
Mark @ Nov 8th 2007 3:44PM
Mostly the PS3 seemed to be better at showing the color brown. IMO
LaughingTarget @ Nov 8th 2007 3:47PM
So, you're pretty much saying the PS3 just shows all of the game's colors well.
sp @ Nov 8th 2007 4:18PM
that's not what it sounded like he said to me.???
Mark @ Nov 8th 2007 4:33PM
I think laughing target is being racist. IMO
LaughingTarget @ Nov 8th 2007 4:36PM
:P at Mark.
Nah, the game's color pallette is primarily brown.
Imadogg @ Nov 8th 2007 9:05PM
"I think laughing target is being racist. IMO"
I LOLed at that, don't know why I didn't think of that haha
Steven @ Nov 13th 2007 9:45PM
The game is not mostly brown. I just played through it and theres plenty of greens, blues, and blacks. The setting is located mostly in Russia.
elmersglue @ Nov 8th 2007 3:49PM
You guys are fucking kidding me right? Stop trying to find differences, they look EXACTLY THE FUCKING SAME. SHUT UP, ALL OF YOU.
And someone from joystiq, please, for the love of God, convince corporate to restrict ads that make NOISE. How the fuck does Mini expect to sell cars when all they're doing is annoying the shit out of potential buyers and making us hate their guts.
arrrgh @ Nov 8th 2007 4:00PM
+ 3905720372039!!!!!
PLEASE!!!! FUCK this is the most annoying thing ever. If you're trying to use the "surf-at-work" crowd, you're well on your way with those ads :@
Slaziman @ Nov 8th 2007 3:50PM
I never spotted the difference between the Madden versions TBH... I ain't got hawk eyes!
That being said, I just dropped 150 Euros on Orange Box, Gears, and CoD 4 for PC
It's gonna be one hell of a weekend!
RedJoggingSuit(MSDF-Battle Angel) @ Nov 8th 2007 3:52PM
The 360 version looks sooo much better, why waste your money on the crappy ps3 one...
arrrgh @ Nov 8th 2007 4:00PM
um...what?
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Nov 8th 2007 4:03PM
umm...what?
Dude there is absolutely no difference. Stop kidding yourself.
RedJoggingSuit(MSDF-Battle Angel) @ Nov 8th 2007 11:24PM
Joking joking... I just don;t understand why they put these out other than to get my first response.
Chris @ Nov 8th 2007 3:53PM
I think I saw a few better textures on the Xbox version, I'm thinking mainly of this time where it showed this mustached dude's face, the face texture looked a little less pale and slightly more... textured. Ps3 had some better lighting in spots, but i think the 360 generally looked a smidge better. Really though, if you switched between with maybe a 20 second break, you wouldn't notice any differences whatsoever. Maybe side by side you can tell a tiny thing, but the reality is that they both look great. I'd be interested to see how it looks on a high end pc.
In other news, I'm debating weather to go with the 360 or pc version, I have a pc that can run it at max settings, but I generally enjoy xbox live's multiplayer over pc's. The pc version is cheaper, but the 360 comes with achievements, which in my opinion add a fair deal of fun to games. I use the same monitor and speakers for both my 360 and pc, (22 inch samsung 226bw, Creative GigaWorks ProGamer G550W) so that's not a deciding factor.
Any thoughts?
LaughingTarget @ Nov 8th 2007 3:54PM
I'd say the 360 version. The game is farily short and the multiplayer is just to derivitive to rush out and buy it just for that. Console games keep their value longer, so you could sell it off for a smaller loss than the PC version.
Slaziman @ Nov 8th 2007 3:58PM
I was in the same boat, but I decided that KB&M and better graphics was worth losing achievements and some online functionality
arrrgh @ Nov 8th 2007 4:01PM
my thoughts are that it does not affect the game experience and thus does not really matter. It is merely a point on which to argue
gok @ Nov 8th 2007 3:54PM
There is no difference that matters. If you're seeing difference and think it matters you should go kill yourself.
kinshadow @ Nov 8th 2007 3:54PM
The PS3 graphics looked more expensive. Like a steak.
Sieged Eagle @ Nov 8th 2007 3:54PM
I can notice very little differences on both versions of the games. PS3's has a little more definition and color while the 360's has a little more lighting effects, but pretty much people might not notice these differences and say the games look identical.
Looks like the PS3 is finally showing what it has... for once...
Crono (NDF - Knight of the Old School) @ Nov 8th 2007 3:56PM
Finally caught up is right.
Now they're only half-way to their goal of making the 360 look like garbage.
TheKingInYellow @ Nov 8th 2007 3:58PM
I have both a 360 and PS3 and I went 360 for COD4 for the rumble.
Would have gone PS3 if the DualShock 3 was out. The noise of the 360 is a bit annoying if you aren't cranking your stereo when you play games.
