Nega-review: Super Mario Galaxy

Super Mario Galaxy "isn't quite perfect." (6) "It doesn't invent new kinds of gameplay" (2) and "It's not as revolutionary as Mario 64." (3) "If you played that seminal game, Mario Galaxy's star hunt progression probably sounds familiar to you." (6) "There's no denying that Super Mario Galaxy predominantly sticks with the tried and true." (8)
"Once again we have a Mario game with a shell of a story, and this one doesn't even have any ridiculous twists." (8) "The title begins with a predictable ... storybook introduction ... told through very basic and boring storybook cut-scenes." (6) "This all certainly sounds par for the course." (7) Sadly, the game seems to have "a complete disinterest in telling a compelling story." (5)
"The concept of running around giant spheres can be daunting at first." (3) "Just be warned that the potential for nausea is high, as it takes a moment or two to adjust to the camera." (4) "There are a few areas where the camera prevents you from seeing things perfectly," (7) such as "times where walls will obstruct your view or you won't be able to rotate the perspective to see where you are supposed to jump next." (5) "Every so often ... you will find yourself in a situation where the camera isn't quite right ... When that happens and you can't center yourself, you have no recourse, which is unfortunate ... It's not perfect." (6)"One-off modes, which see you doing things like steering a jet-ski-like ray fish by tilting the controller left and right. ... come perilously close to feeling tacked on, and add little compared to simply steering with the analogue stick." (1) "For the most part this game could control on a Gamecube pad." (9)
"The extra costumes and cap equivalents also feel a little flimsy in their implementation." (1) "The spring suit is kind of a pain to control given Mario's perpetual bounciness," (7) and "its unwieldy controls must be manipulated in tight quarters." (8) "A few [missions] involving the bee suit are a bit frustrating." (7) "No matter how adorable Mario's fat little bee booty is, these elements just don't feel well integrated into the main game." (1)"Galaxy is unforgiving at times." (2) "With the health power meter now reduced from six sections to three, experimenting with new enemies and tactics can be a little fraught - try the wrong thing twice in a row and you're in immediately danger of dying." (1) "There are one-off 'platforming worlds - which are rock hard,k" (3) "and worst of all, for a game that puts such an emphasis on going out of your way to get an extra life, all of your lives are reset when you turn the Wii off." (5) This is "all topped off with a mind-bending final level that might be a bit too demanding for neophyte players who cut their teeth on Nintendogs and Brain Age." (2) "The final areas [are] perhaps a bit frustrating to inexperienced players." (7)
"More disappointing is the lack of a strong sense of identity." (1) "There isn't much of a thread tying together all these disparate worlds," (7) and "the starship in particular doesn't offer the kind of playground freedom that you want in a Mario hub area." (1) "Remain patient through the slow and sometimes tedious beginning hours," (5) and "in the latter half of the game does the design falter -- a copy-and-paste level here, too much doodad collecting there." (2) "There are a handful of anti-climatic star missions." (9) For instance, "it just doesn't feel right to have Mario lighting torches to open locked doors. ... Overall the game can feel a bit fragmented." (1)"The so-called two-player mode ... felt gimmicky and tacked on." (4) "There's a two-player option where the second player can collect star bits, though it's pretty pointless." (8) "The only thing the second player can do is collect Star Bits with their Wii Remote, which is pretty much useless." (4) "It's not the most involved co-op mode you'll ever experience." (7) "It is a little perplexing that they'd even bother to implement it in the first place." (4)
Welcome back to the Joystiq Nega-review, your one-stop shop for all the small negative points about a critically acclaimed game, all bunched together into an absolutely brutal whole. As always, we do this not because we hate the game in question, but because no game is perfect and because we know it can be easy to miss the small negatives in a wave of hype and praise.
This was a particularly hard Nega-review for me, being a dyed-in-the-wool Mario fan for nearly all my life. Still, reading through all these reviews made me more excited than ever for the proud return of our plumber friend. What's more, now that I know what the reviewers didn't like, I won't have to be unhappily surprised when I come across these bad bits.

You must have this confused with a Sony nega-review
F. Rocker or Fernando R.? @ Nov 8th 2007 12:14PM
Except that Sony doesn't have Nega Reviewed games (no exclusive critically acclaimed games available).
Only CoD4 (multiplatform) and The Orange Box (not yet release).
gonk @ Nov 8th 2007 12:24PM

Trev @ Nov 8th 2007 1:27PM
"no exclusive critically acclaimed games available, except for Ratchet and Clank Future, which I try to pretend was bad by claiming it bombed despite having a big list of reviews 90 and above on metacritic"
and
"Only CoD4 (multiplatform) and The Orange Box (not yet release), because if I stopped living in a fantasy world, I might have to stop trolling"
I fixed your typo for you, Fernando. Better watch those fingers next time.
Trev @ Nov 8th 2007 1:28PM
Also: obvious trolling of trolls is obvious. Its all in fun.
Jake @ Nov 8th 2007 2:33PM
Trev,
Though Ratchet certainly turned out good, it still has a sub-90 metacritic score. Not worthy of a negareview.
Vidikron (FU) @ Nov 8th 2007 2:50PM
@Jake
Please... GS's ludicrously low review drags the average down. Their two main gripes were pretty lame... or at least not applied equally to other games.
Vidikron (FU) @ Nov 8th 2007 2:55PM
And, WTF, R&C got a 60 from someone called "games(TM)". LOL... Also, take note that most of the lower scores for R&C mention a lack of MP and/or the game being too easy. Funny how neither or those matter when reviewing Mario. Of course, Iguess allowing a second person to pick up star bits with a pointer counts :/ Mario games start out at a 9 just for being Mario and not on merit. I like Galaxy, but damn, just compare the reviews between it an R&C and it's easy to see the different standards.
pixelator @ Nov 8th 2007 2:59PM
Whoa... You're telling me a MARIO game from NINTENDO of all companies is sticking to what's TRIED & TRUE? How ludicrous!
Trev @ Nov 8th 2007 3:06PM
If you want to focus on the 8 reviews below 90, go for it Jake. But just shy of four times that many say its 90 or above.
Kyle Orland @ Nov 8th 2007 3:31PM
"Though Ratchet certainly turned out good, it still has a sub-90 metacritic score. Not worthy of a negareview."
This is exactly right. As a rule of thumb, we try to do nega-reviews only for games that have a 95% average or above. If the average is around 90, that means there are probably some 8/10 reviews balancing out the 5/5 reviews, and those 8/10s are likely to have more than just niggling complaints.
The whole point of the Nega-review is to take a game that literally EVERYONE loves and bring out the small things that tend to get lost in the waves of hype. With game's like Ratchet, people tend to like it, but most reviews found some somewhat substantial flaws on their own, so the Nega-review isn't really necessary. Hope this makes sense!
Vidikron (FU) @ Nov 8th 2007 3:42PM
@Kyle
"and those 8/10s are likely to have more than just niggling complaints."
OK, but go read those "niggling complaints". For R&C they amount to no MP and being too easy. Exactly the same boat Galaxy is in, but it doesn't get docked for the same stuff. I mean, I agree with your reasoning behind NegaReviews, but I just find the double standard between how R&C and Mario are reviewed to be asinine. Not your fault, but still absurd all the same.
Again, let me be clear that I really like both of these games, but I honestly think R&C got judged more harshly for being a PS3 exclusive and not being "Mario".
Trev @ Nov 8th 2007 4:25PM
Hey, I'm not lobbying for a nega-review of anything. I'm just giving Fernando hell over his seemingly reality-disconnected trolling ways.
R&CF got a ton of great reviews, but it still wasn't "critically acclaimed" because Fernando would have set the bar for that statement wherever it had to be to say R&CF wasn't. Just like 100K some units in a couple weeks is "bombing". Sure, less than Mario or Halo 3, but one had a marketing blitz and the other has fans that buy anything with his mustachioed face on it.
R&CF has what, A single TV ad and a decent following with no nostalgia?
Chris @ Nov 8th 2007 11:56AM
What a crappy game!

"... one-stop shop for all the small negative points about a critically acclaimed game bunched together into an absolutely brutal whole..."
Damn... it hurts. =(
colin @ Nov 9th 2007 3:15AM
does it hurt more than two mario sunshines ductaped together?
xXFenixKnight13Xx @ Nov 8th 2007 11:57AM
Nice try Joystiq but NO ONE can stop that cute little plumber from stealing our hearts everytime =)
Rususeruru @ Nov 8th 2007 11:59AM
Ok, Marcus Fenix and the word cute within 10 miles of each other... awkward.
xXFenixKnight13Xx @ Nov 8th 2007 12:19PM
oops
Zsavior @ Nov 8th 2007 11:59AM
Why should they care? It is a Nega Review, these things point out the bad sides of video game am I right? I like nintendo to but come on what is there to defend? It got 9.5s and up across the board, a nega review is supposed to show the negative, if they can't be ok with this review then I am scared.
megaStryke @ Nov 8th 2007 12:01PM
OMG JOYSTIQ IS TOBIAS AGAIN! EVERY WEEK THEY IS TOBIAS WITH SOMEONE ELSE! IT IS SOOOO... TOBIAS!
HectorTheValiant @ Nov 8th 2007 12:12PM
Have you seen Joystiq give a "nega review" on a sony EXCLUSIVE title?
Didn't think so...
Yes Joystiq is biased. It really couldn't be any more obvious.
FOXHOUND @ Nov 8th 2007 12:28PM
You probably *won't* see a NegaReview for anything on PS3, since just about all of its exclusives will hit full steam next year.
Maybe one for HAZE... but I honestly can't see that game becoming a system promoter(notice I said 'promoter', not 'seller')like RESISTANCE.
James @ Nov 8th 2007 12:58PM
Sony has exclusives?
Chris @ Nov 8th 2007 1:10PM
They only do Nega Reviews for games that get high praise across the board. PS3 hasn't had a game that gets above a 9.0 from every reviewer.
Basically, the PS3 is garbage until MGS4.
Cyro @ Nov 8th 2007 1:35PM
Ouch!
Rubang B (BRUSH WITH FAME) @ Nov 8th 2007 4:25PM
Son has games lolwut?
::ducks::
Hey it's ok I uhh... I'm Sony.
jpn @ Nov 8th 2007 12:01PM
No game's perfect...but who's playing any Mario game for the story?? (OK, except the RPG/"Paper" ones, but this ain't that.)
And I have a weird tendancy to get easily nauseated from games (I threw up once from playing Portal) so that makes me a little nervous...
David @ Nov 8th 2007 9:27PM
My favorite plot twist of all time is *SPOILER ALERT* finding out that the Princess is in another castle.
Gumbydunzeeto @ Nov 8th 2007 10:02PM
Psychonauts is still better.
Zertoss @ Nov 8th 2007 12:05PM
U R MR GAY
Thanks for another fun Negareview, Joystiq. I'm going to be looking out for these negative points when I get my copy and see if they're as bad as the bits above make them sound, because for most high quality games and even a lot of the mediocre and low quality games, they aren't.
ShortFuse @ Nov 8th 2007 12:10PM
The last 30 stars in the game are deliciously difficult and practically evil. Negative point? Only for n00bs! Platforming at its best!
Dale @ Nov 8th 2007 12:34PM
Or people who buy games for fun and are tired of not being able to see all of the game just because they don't devote their entire lives to the perfection of them.
jpn @ Nov 8th 2007 12:50PM
Geez Dale...for some people, challenging = fun. I'm sorry you won't get to see the whole game because you don't want to devote "your entire life to the perfection" of this game. Perhaps they'll come out with a system where the controller has just one big button you have to push once, then you can see the whole game.
Perhaps watching a movie would be easier, or more fun. Grab yourself a V-Smile too, you'll be able to see all of those games.
Drunkard @ Nov 8th 2007 12:13PM
I'm not a big Mario fan, but no matter what game it is don't do this "Nega-review" thing again. Shouldn’t you acknowledge the good points about games as well?
Demoting games like this can encourage consumers not to buy any game; if no games sell, industry will fail and joystiq will be making reviews about cakes instead.
…don’t go there
Zertoss @ Nov 8th 2007 12:20PM
I guess you missed the Metareview a few posts down.
megaStryke @ Nov 8th 2007 12:20PM
Uhhhhh... they DO. It's called the META-review.
Steve @ Nov 8th 2007 12:21PM
But the nega-review is clearly a joke, and it's only done for huge games that are going to sell well regardless. I think it's a great idea: everyone benefits from having a sober view of games, and we should all do what we can to stay off the hype trains.
Poisoned Al @ Nov 8th 2007 12:56PM
Look, there's the point!
*WOOOSH!*
Opps, looks like you missed it there buddy!
Chrysee @ Nov 8th 2007 8:51PM
I like these Nega Reviews. All the games they've done this to so far have been overall really good games that got good reviews and sold well.
It's just an easy way to wade through all the hype surrounding a title and see what wasn't done so well, without having to read a whole stack of reviews for it that are all basically concentrating on how awesome it is.
Todd @ Nov 8th 2007 12:14PM
Hmm, and yet, this doesn't ruin my interest in playing the game.
Almack64 (NOF - Ultrazord) @ Nov 8th 2007 12:15PM
I like these Nega reviews, they're kind of like a good roasting.
megaStryke @ Nov 8th 2007 12:25PM
I'm bringing the marshmallows.
Hirsbrunner @ Nov 8th 2007 12:57PM
I'm not sure if Dean Martin would be proud or not.
Roddie @ Nov 8th 2007 12:17PM
I'd read about that mind-bending demanding last level, and it never came; the game is too easy. I had all 120 in a few days, and while there were a couple of comet stars that needed a few attempts before passing them, on the whole there is little challenge.
The only thing that makes the game difficult is the absolutely useless camera. I can't believe how much its problems have been played down in the reviews I've read. Half the time (if not more than) all camera controls are blocked out; first person camera (when you're allowed it) gives you a tiny field of view and the automatic camera movement is notorious for switching round when you're trying to jump to one place and meaning you land somewhere else.
ColossalHat @ Nov 8th 2007 1:06PM
So the camera's almost identical to Mario 64's?
Noshino @ Nov 8th 2007 1:29PM
CollosalHat,
at times it is, and there are times in which it is worse...
Spastic_Hobo @ Nov 9th 2007 5:36PM
you know, even with all these negative points bunched together like that, they still don't sound that bad. Probably because they all have qualifiers next to them. The levels are "a bit" tedious. there are "a few" camera problems.
Trev @ Nov 8th 2007 12:22PM
The nega-reviews actually make me more interested in games than the normal ones, mostly because they condense the honest criticisms of a game and cut out the fan gushing that's always in there. Also, they don't have number scores; it's just comments on the game.
"Confusing battles, cheap deaths, over powered weapons combos, limited customization. 9.75"-Mass Effect review.
^^That right there is what I hate about numbers. That doesn't reflect what the review said. It says: here are a bunch of problems, but we're going to rate it nearly perfectly anyway because... we can and people would throw a fit if we didn't.
So if you like Mario, you'll like this, but it doesn't really bring anything new to the table and there are some camera issues (not that those are uncommon anywhere in gaming). Actual information, thanks Nega-review.
I don't dig Mario, so I know by not playing this I'm not missing out on something that I might have liked, but none of these are game-breaking flaws that will ruin it for someone that really love the series.
