Rumor: Some Best Buys selling Super Mario Galaxy early

Now, if you're like us, something about that rings false. That's right: Reggie announced the game's release date as November 12 at E3 earlier this year. Normally, we'd shrug it off and hit the bars early, but we spotted a purported pic (with obligatory receipt) of the game over at Go Nintendo that once again imbued us with rays of cosmic hope. We'll leave it at that and pass the whole thing off to you for further inquiry. So, readers, anyone happen to score a copy of Super Mario Galaxy early and, if so, what say you share a little pic of your plunder with good ol' Joystiq?

I went to best buy, and they kicked my ass out of store for smelling like farts!
Jerk Face @ Nov 8th 2007 8:49AM
That was the most ridiculous first comment ever. LOL
B1gC72 @ Nov 9th 2007 2:31AM
lol how random is that? good stuff though.
Seth @ Nov 8th 2007 4:22AM
That was me. I kicked you out. You smelled awful.
ColossalHat @ Nov 8th 2007 6:01AM
No official release date? Odd, I kinda thought a release was a given nowadays. Though I still strongly disapprove of breaking street dates on any game even if it's got no "official" release/street date.
When street dates get broken, asshats will post videos all over youtube and the rest of the internet showing the ending of the game, then someone I know will see it and decide I need to know what happens before I get a chance to play the game. So far that's happened with damn near every game this year, luckily I've a PS3 so it hasn't really affected me.
And yes, that was a self-burn.
Psaakyrn @ Nov 8th 2007 6:16AM
You're speaking as if there wouldn't be overly bored people who will buy the game the moment they're available and complete it (with videos) before the weekend rolls over.
Insanemouse @ Nov 8th 2007 6:40AM
I went to Best Buy last night on the word of this story. There were no copies on the shelf and I asked an employee about whether or not they were selling it. He, of course, said that they weren't but looked it up in their inventory system and they had still received zero copied and it had a street date of November 13. Don't know if this helps debunk the story or not.
NinKenDO @ Nov 8th 2007 7:32AM
I'm posting this from the Best Buy I work at and we have 36 copies instock right now (and another 130 copies in transit), but none on the shelf. I'm going to see if I can snag (read- purchase) a copy when I leave today. As a side note I think it's such BS that we got over 300 copies of Halo 3 at release and less than 200 of Mario (a far better known franchise and on a system that's selling better than the 360).
Clack @ Nov 8th 2007 8:01AM
SMG won't sell like Halo 3 did the first couple of days. It will probably outsell it over the long haul though.
flameofdoom666 @ Nov 8th 2007 8:08AM
Getting the game early at best buy doesn't get you the awesome pre-order coin!
gonk @ Nov 8th 2007 10:56AM
my friend got the coin but didn't preorder it :p he works at nintendo, he got it from their store for $30
jhelms89 @ Nov 8th 2007 8:30AM
My boss and I got ours Tuesday at Best Buy in Bloomington, Indiana
JodyAnthony @ Nov 8th 2007 8:47AM

JodyAnthony @ Nov 8th 2007 9:00AM

Jerk Face @ Nov 8th 2007 8:50AM
I can wait four days. It's just Mario. : )
DarthDavid @ Nov 8th 2007 9:21AM
I can wait too.....but not cuz its Mario but for the free $25 gift card from Toys R Us dude. =)
Jerk Face @ Nov 8th 2007 9:24AM
Yeah, seriously! I didn't even know about that until today. Do you have to pre-order it for that or can you just walk in on Tuesday and nab it?
Wait, can you even pre-order at Toys R Us? LOL
B1gC72 @ Nov 9th 2007 2:37AM
oh hell yes. i have it preordered at Gamecrazy but im just going to move that reservation to something else cause that's just too good a deal to pass up.
i wonder if they would let me buy the game and get the gift card, return the game, and buy it again using the gift card. i doubt they would let me do that though lol.
Brandon @ Nov 8th 2007 9:30AM
I saw them at the store in Bloomington, IN on Tuesday but forgot what the actual realease date was so I simply picked up COD4. If I had remembered that it wasn't supposed to come out until next week I would have snatched up a couple of them.
adg1034 @ Nov 8th 2007 9:46AM
I picked my copy up last night from the Best Buy at Roseville, MN. Absolutely amazing.

It irritates me that Nintendo advertises the "ship" date (Nov. 12) as the "release" date. We on the East coast allegedly won't get the game until the 13th. Nintendo did the same thing with MP3.
Why can't they just wait and ship the game to everyone before releasing on the same day? When Halo 3 came out, it came out on the 25th _everywhere_! Why must you be so different Nintendo? Oh how you annoy me.
Mark @ Nov 8th 2007 10:21AM
I just got it at Best Buy in Akron, Ohio. (Actually cuyahoga falls,) 44221. Seeya in a few days!
nintendomaniac64 @ Nov 8th 2007 4:23PM
Holy crap, you're in cuyahoga falls?! I'm just a bit north in Aurora! (where Sea World was & where Geauga Lake is)
Mark @ Nov 8th 2007 4:32PM
Why hello there. :)
Tiger of PTS @ Nov 8th 2007 11:26PM
I had sex with a guy in Cuyahoga Falls once.
RPGJock @ Nov 8th 2007 10:36AM
Sad that most people don't know the street date for Super Mario Galaxy. I know Nintendy is going for the marathon race vs Halo3's media sprint. Nintendo figures, its Mario, it will sell no matter how much of a non media blitz we do. I mean have you even seen a commercials for SMG??
Either they have balls and feel they don't need to advertising for Mario or that they really don't care about core gaming anymore. Seriously, when Wii Fit comes out and they literally take over the air waves promoting that thing, that will be the official statement on which way Nintendo is focusing on.
But once again I say that Mario will out sell Halo 3 world wide in the end.
Nick Ritch @ Nov 8th 2007 2:31PM
I'm gonna go to Toys R Us to get mine cuz you get a $25 giftcard with SMG. I'm gonna use it for Assassin's creed!
Hopefully I'm successful though because I tried to get Call of Duty 4 at circuit city so I could get COD 3 with it and long story short they are a bunch of assholes that stock 3 copies of a game they run a promotion for. I guess that's why I don't shop there!!!
Edog Lost @ Nov 8th 2007 12:18PM
Confirmed. Best Buy Pasadena California
Thrawnsama @ Nov 8th 2007 3:45PM
Yea, our local Best Buy (Fargo, ND) was selling them early yesterday (the 7th) but after about an hour the management realized their "oops" and called out over the loud speaker to anybody in the store who might have a copy to please return it and they would GLADLY hold it for you until the release date... my roommate bought it anyways :Þ
HolyOrphan @ Nov 8th 2007 4:26PM
I'm an assistant supervisor at a Best Buy near Chicago. Best Buy is supposed to hold Mario Galaxy until it's official street date, like my store is doing. The stores that sold it early can actually be fined by Nintendo for breaking hard street dates.
Jeff @ Nov 8th 2007 2:21PM
"No official street date" just means that, unlike Halo 3 and other games, it's not limited by the publisher for when they can sell it. In this case, the "street date" is basically just the day after the "ship" date, which is typically on a Monday. If true, that means a store can simply put the product up for sale as soon as they receive it. It also means that many stores that don't get their games overnight (like Best Buy and Circuit City) may not get the game until Wednesday or Thursday if it actually ships from their warehouse on Monday.
