Super Mario Galaxy, also known as the game Wii owners have been waiting for, is #1 on the Japanese sales charts. Galaxy sold a quarter million units its first week of release. But, but, but "Teh Haloz" sold much more than that the fanboys will scream. Yes, but that's a launch in the US and we're talking about one island in the Pacific currently. A quarter million units in the first week is a good start.
The Galaxy sales were equal to the rest of the top ten selling games combined. The full top ten list by Media Create can be found after the break. November will certainly be an interesting month to see the NPD numbers in the States ... oh right, that might not happen.
1. Super Mario Galaxy (Wii)
2. Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation (360) -- *gasp* We know, right?
3. Final Fantasy Tactics A2 (DS)
4. Super Robot Wars Scramble Commander the 2nd (PS2)
5. DS Literature Collection (DS)
6. DS Nishimura Kyotarou Suspense Detective Series: Deadly Intent (DS)
7. Wii Sports (Wii)
8. Flash Focus: Vision Training in Minutes a Day (DS)
9. World Soccer Winning Eleven DS: Goal to Goal (DS)
10. Pokemon Mysterious Dungeon: Time Expedition Party (DS)

"Sunshine outsold Galaxy on a system with a much smaller install base and none of the popularity."
Actually, the GC would have likely had a considerably larger install base that the Wii currently does by the time Sunshine came out, so a 30k unit difference really doesn't "paint a different picture" at all.

mega, dude. I hate to break this to you again but the ONLY way to buy the new PSP during Crisis Core's debut week was buying the bundle. The standalone PSPs would not be made available for yet another week. In other words, the sales of Crisis Core went to three main factions.
1. Those who already owned PSP.
2. Those who bought the bundle.
3. Those who bought the PSP a single week before the system redesign.
Nowhere in that three does it account for the system revision launch because, frankly, it didn't happen in your time table. Period.
That is also why the week after the Crisis Core launch, PSP saw huge numbers, larger than the week the Crisis Core launched. Those numbers were riden for three weeks afterwards. This also helped keep Crisis Core selling units beyond the initial release week rush.

"this only reflects 3 days of sales, not 1 week."
Actually its 4 days, Galaxy came out on the 1st and MC went till the 4th. I don't know how many days Sunshine's "week" was for and I'm not going to bother looking it up.
Also why does this same stupid argument keep getting brought up??? Haven't we seen enough of these sales figures to know that the majority of sales happen in the first few days??
Galaxy did 130k the first day and then 120k in the next 3 days and I'm sure each consecutive day was less than the last a by a good amount.

Doesn't anyone just admit anymore that Mario and Ratchet are both really good games? I like them both, I own both a PS3 and Wii, and I had just as much fun with Metroid Prime 3 that I had with.... um.... Well I would have had with Metal Gear Solid 4 but it got delayed.
My point is, each of the game systems has something fun to enjoy that I've had a blast playing. Bioshock, Mario Galaxy, Silent Hill Origins, Dementium, Stranglehold, Metroid Prime 3, Halo 3, Ratchet and Clank... these are all games I enjoyed playing this year, I don't really care what system it's on. I have game systems to play games... not game systems to support a company.
Seriously, did you Sony/Microsoft/Nintendo fanboys have little to much team spirit in High School? I hated that stuff, why the fuck should I support the school I go to just because I go to it.

I like how joystiq pre-anticipates insults to their favored company and then pre-defends them before anything is even said. Keep it up! It's fantastic!

Enjoy it, it may be the only actual Mario game you get without buying another console.

It's a disappointment that there's no original Mario Bros on the Wii's VC yet. It was packed with pretty much every GBA re-release.

You seem to have lost what I was saying for picking at the words, Samfish.
NES: 2 Mario games (SMB 1&2) and 1 game with Mario characters shoehorned in to boost sales (SMB2)
SNES: 2 Mario games (SMW 1&2).
N64: 1 Mario game (Mario 64).
Gamecube: 1 Mario game (Sunshine).
Wii, if this trend keeps up: 1 mario game.
And until the Wii, there was no playing them on anything but their intended system, and with the Wii you're getting charged for it. Like I said, enjoy Galaxy, its getting very good reviews. Given how things have worked in the past, it seems unlikely there will be another until Nintendo's next console.

I wanna see the sales numbers for the first week in the US for this game. The sales are going to give everyone a good indication of the Attachment rate the Wii has and how many of those console owners are really just casual gamers. I believe most Wii owners are going to buy this game, the next time they walk in the store and say, " Hey look there is another mario game out! Cool! " And then they'll buy it. Casual gamers are not on top of release dates. But hey, will see.

I'm not sure - it certainly won't compete w/ Halo's initial sales. I don't know what percentage of Wii owners regularly walk into video game stores, let alone would be enticed by Mario.
Nintendo really needed a commercial where they showed a boy and a girl playin Mario using the co-op mode. They really suck at advertising. I want my Mario Mushroom Fuel damnit!

What's the deal from TRU and the 25 dollar gift card?

You can spin for the win, but 250k is very disappointing number for such a high profile game.
US and European sales will be in the millions.
