Velvet Revolver, Foo Fighters Guitar Hero III track packs hit Xbox Live
We think the signs are pretty clear now that Activision isn't taking the threat from Rock Band lying down. Just a bit more than a week after Guitar Hero III was released, we already have two meaty song packs to download through Xbox Live and enjoy.
For 500 points ($6.25) you can get either a Foo Fighters pack that includes "The Pretender" from the new album "Echoes Silence Patience & Grace", "All My Life" and "This Is A Call" or the Velvet Revolver pack, with "She Builds Quick Machines","Slither" and "Messages". Each of the packs are by the original artists. With a nice boost like this to the track listing before the old songs have even gone stale, it's clear Red Octane is playing for keeps. ... You may not want to count Guitar Hero out just yet.
Update: Activision has also announced that boss battle anthems and "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" will be downloadable (for free!) later this month for play outside the game's Career mode.

Why would anyone buy this??
Shagittarius @ Nov 8th 2007 11:13AM
These tracks in no way compare to the complete Who's next and Metallica black albums which will hit in the first 2 weeks of rock bands release.
GH3 = Teh Loser

They gotta break 1,000,000 points to learn the truth.
GRANTED @ Nov 8th 2007 9:27AM
I haven't played guitar hero but it seems strange that they wouldn't put baker st, my hero, monkey wrench, or learn to fly in a foo fighters pack. i guess everlong might not work too well.
Martin @ Nov 8th 2007 9:29AM
Monkey Wrench was in GH II. That might be part of the rationale.
Viridium @ Nov 8th 2007 9:59AM
Bah, the Foos have generally sucked ass both before and after "Color and the Shape".
Crazy Vincent @ Nov 8th 2007 10:31AM
"Learn to Fly" is going to be in Rock Band. Personally, I'd like to play "Iron and Stone," it's from one of their import singles. You can hear a sample here:

GRANTED @ Nov 8th 2007 3:31PM
wow. rock band it is.
Martin @ Nov 8th 2007 9:28AM
I think they're taking it laying down, as they haven't altered the pricing or options structure. $2 for a good song is not a bad price, but they're still forcing you to buy three songs, only one of which you may be interested in.
copa @ Nov 8th 2007 9:50AM
Exactly. I thought competition was to supposed to exert downward pressure on pricing.
puffin @ Nov 8th 2007 11:17AM
Sadly, I think you're going to find GH3 to be the cheaper DLC of the 2 rock-type rythm games. Expect Rockband's DLC to be as expensive or even more expensive.
jason @ Nov 8th 2007 9:30AM
Yeah, good luck competing with Rock Band where I get full album downloads with new content every single week. Makes GH3 efforts look silly.
DarthDavid @ Nov 8th 2007 9:33AM
Waiting for Rock Band....don't get me wrong I've been playing Guitar Hero since the first one came out...the song list is great but I feel the note charts are a mixed bag and they made the timing easier. Add that with stupid hyper mode and you have scrubs thinking they're great without doing ANY hammer-on or pull-offs.
Hopefully they'll add a patch that will allow the Rock Band guitar to work with GHIII then I'll pick up the stand alone game.
baby sea tuna @ Nov 8th 2007 9:35AM
I'd pay 500 pts for 4 Foo Fighters songs. That's not totally unreasonable.
That is, if I decide not to sell GHIII. I'm still on the fence.
MooseMuffin @ Nov 8th 2007 9:36AM
It's 3 songs, not 4. And yes it is still totally unreasonable.
baby sea tuna @ Nov 8th 2007 9:49AM
Oh, you're right. Still, if any of these songs are half as fun to play as Monkey Wrench was, I'd still consider it.
And people bitching about the prices of the song packs: get over it, they're not coming down. Blame the thousands of people that set the precedent with GHII's DLC.
F. Rocker or Fernando R.? @ Nov 8th 2007 9:36AM
What's wrong with the music world?
Why the rock turn to this shit?
Neon Jebus @ Nov 8th 2007 9:57AM
You know Fernando, it's funny to know that while I agree with you that rock has gone into the crapper, we still probably don't listen to the same stuff.
deaftly @ Nov 8th 2007 9:41AM
AWESOME. The foo tracks are an instant purchase for me, great song choices. Lets hope some god at activision decides to include the entire colour and the shape album for download next.
baby sea tuna @ Nov 8th 2007 9:54AM
Easily one of the best albums of the '90s.
Farseer (GDI) @ Nov 8th 2007 4:10PM
Agreed. One of the best.
Vader582 @ Nov 8th 2007 9:47AM
Let the attempted fleecing of our wallets begin! I hope everyone who bought the GH2 DLC is happy. I'm staying away from GH3 for this very reason. Burn me once, shame on you. Burn me twice, shame on me.
jayeffaar @ Nov 8th 2007 4:52PM
At least, American gamers are "only" being fleeced for $6.25 per pack. Despite the fact that the Canadian dollar is now worth more than the US dollar, we're still being charged $7.75 for 500 pts up here. I'm not buying _any_ DLC until they fix that.
XanthouS @ Nov 8th 2007 9:49AM
Harmonix seems really dedicated to filling Rock Band's DLC library. I'm hoping they choose a price point a bit lower than over $2 a song.
Thankfully they won't force us to buy 3-song packs, either.
Bigfoot @ Nov 8th 2007 9:52AM
I'd rather put that $6.25 towards a Billy Barou from Moe's.
meledeo @ Nov 8th 2007 9:57AM
I was wondering why the GH3 ads on TV featuring Slash had them playing Velvet Revolver's Slither, when it (nor any other Velvet Relvover song) wasn't anywhere on the track list.
gonk @ Nov 8th 2007 10:54AM
i'd pay 500 points for 4 songs, but not 3
Christopher7xii @ Nov 8th 2007 11:26AM
why does it always have to come down to rock band vs guitar hero?
The option for more tracks = win for consumer
I understand we all want everything for free, but life doesn't work that way. $6.25 for 3 songs is fair game I think. Considering that's the same price as a combo at most fast food places, and you'll play these three songs for a total time much more than how long that Double Whopper combo satisfied you. Hell, most action figures at the store now-a-days are $8. Stop crying you babies.
why not the LS2LS7? @ Nov 8th 2007 11:34AM
I'd rather they upload a patch to remove some of the suckiness. I've played the PS3 and 360 versions and neither has the proper feel (although the 360 version was closer to right).
MTV/EA should make a guitar-only pack of Rock Band. It'd wipe GH3 from the face of the earth (and I think we'd be the better for it).
gonk @ Nov 8th 2007 1:04PM
but you can't do career online in rock band either
DiddlyKong @ Nov 8th 2007 11:35AM
I just bought both packs and I don't feel bad at all. I'm at work now and can't wait to get home. And if anyone's wondering the note tracks are excellent.
Christopher7xii @ Nov 8th 2007 11:49AM
Thanks for openly supporting DLC. I thought I was the only person that actually *WELCOMES* add-ons to my games. Maybe that's because I grew up a PC-gamer though...
Shockgamer @ Nov 8th 2007 12:13PM
Isn't that a kick in the nads, considering how Slither features in the commercial.
Oh well, Consider both bought. All I care about as fun note charts.
MoominBiscuit @ Nov 8th 2007 1:57PM
No, the real kick in the testicles is that Europe can buy these song packs, BUT THE FRIKKING GAME ISN'T OUT TIL THE 23RD!
Thanks for punching me in the gut Activision!
Sieged Eagle @ Nov 8th 2007 2:47PM
Awesome. It's nice to see some of Slash's fretwork on GHIII, and as a download. This will be the first pack I'll download when I get the game.
But what I want to see is an SOAD song pack or even better, a Metallica song pack(as long as it has songs from the first 4 albums), then I would instantly buy them.
Donald @ Nov 8th 2007 3:21PM
'scuse me madam, but may I Wham my Oingo Boingo into your Velvet Underground?
Tim @ Nov 8th 2007 3:53PM
What about Wii and PS3 versions? Will they also get this feature of downloading tracks?
gonk @ Nov 8th 2007 5:28PM
probably ps3
Chad @ Nov 9th 2007 2:38AM
It may just be me but the Foo Fighters pack that I bought seems like it's all bass. All the original songs sound fine to me, but all the songs in the pack just seem to have way to much bass. Anyone else notice this? Great band by the way. Just saw them live on Monday night.
dan @ Dec 23rd 2007 12:50PM
does anybody know when these packs become free?
Popple3 @ Dec 23rd 2007 1:11PM
I would say, probably never
J0n47h4n @ Jan 27th 2008 6:20AM
tbh i think should have really revised this game before they let it out before rock band, and deffinately should have revised the song packs, noones gunna buy them.... =/ velvet revolver and foo fighters, what were they actually thinking.
i think i may just sell GH3 when i've completed hard, i need to do metalicca "one" lol
then i'll buy rock band on 360 when its out :)
