Japanese hardware sales, Oct. 29 - Nov. 4: Once in a life cycle edition

We've grown accustomed to compiling these charts with a frightening degree of soulless autonomy, each week's numbers rolling across our brains like tumbleweeds in a deserted... desert town. In fact, the time afforded to us by the near-identical and mindless updates allowed us to discover the actual meaning of the word "autonomy," which we mistakenly believed to mean some sort of badge with your name on it (pronounced auto-know-me). You learn something new every day -- and this day is no different.

With the Xbox 360 bizarrely (and barely) surpassing the PlayStation 3 this week, we've learned to never let our guards down again. Who knows what remarkable event may rattle the fanboy cages next? Perhaps the Xbox 360 will surge ahead of the DS Lite next week? The PlayStation 3 might overtake the Wii! Predictability is truly dead, and we've no time to mourn as we rush headlong into exciting times! Next week will be amazing, we're sure of it!

The 360 is always what makes these charts interesting. As the underdog you don't know what could happen next. People could predict all they want but you just can't tell.

Why do so many hate the PSP? I like it about as much as I do my DS, maybe it's just me.

I know why the PSP gets hated on. Because it is the first handheld to truly give Nintendo some competition in the handheld market. You see, competition is good for consumers, but apparently bad for Nintendobots.

PSP is hated on because when it launched people expected much more of it, and it didn't deliver. Add to that the fact there has been no stand out games for it that aren't ports until only a couple months ago. Most people just became disenfranchised with the PSP and in the video game crazy land of Joystiq, that means you must hate on it and any new SKUs forever.

Just go back two years to see all the anti-DS hate and how so many believed it would be a complete failure while the PSP would be the second coming.

I'm rooting for the 360, but with the increased japanese sales I'm scared the once or if red ring of death or the new alleged "green ring" occurs that it could bite Microsoft in the ass.

Wii and 360 have done the fusion dance!

And for the last two weeks, here in America also happen the impossible... the Wii outsold the 360 here in USA.

Actually PS3 may, just may surpass Wii next week since it is getting heavy advertising and a price but I think on the 11th in Japan.

NObody can explain what just happened in japan, the land of sony n nintendo. I guess this will show some anti western japanese gamers to reconsider the odd of buying an Xbox 360.

Seriously though, I hope that this trend continues so there is a deeper and wider gene pool of games for all plat forms. The more things get "mixed up," the better the game selection will be for everyone.

I'm more surprised that the PSP is still going as strong as it is, more than anything. I keep expecting it to crater and it just kinda hangs in there the best it can.

Probably because they cater to slightly different markets, so it's unlikely the PSP will die out anytime soon.

..because both of the portables are all kinds of awesome? That's my opinion, anyways.

From what I heard, Wii sales is purely limited by console availability. Not sure how long I'll buy that though.
