Rein: UT3 PS3 likely for this year (in America)
With just slightly over seven weeks left in the year, you'd think it would be well known whether or not a major release like Unreal Tournament 3 will be available in time for Christmahanukwanzika. But that's just not the case. After being written off as a 2008 release by Midway back in October, Epic's Mark Rein quickly piped up to say that "the goal is still to get the PS3 version of UT3 in stores before the end of 2007." Hopeful, perhaps, but far from a guarantee. Now, a holiday release is looking a little more secure. For one, the game recently showed up on Sony's list of holiday releases for 2007. For another, Rein recently told Eurogamer that Epic is "very close to a release candidate" and that there's a "very solid shot we'll get out this year" in America. European gamers are not so lucky, though -- the lengthy certification process in the continent makes a 2008 release more likely there. That's OK, though. It's not like the PS3 is suffering from a dearth of good shooters.

News from the future: PS3 UT3 ships with game-stopping bugs, holiday shopper furious while waiting for patch, scheduled to come early spring.

News from the now, go F yourself Wii fanboy.
gonk @ Nov 9th 2007 2:04PM
that's what i was thinking too
rushed games always get some bugs missed, my friend is a playtester and knows this from experience
Marty @ Nov 9th 2007 2:04PM
Wii fanboy? I don't even own a Wii, so shut the F up.
FidliousWong @ Nov 9th 2007 2:06PM
This isn't a hobbit adventure. Enough with the trolling, guys.
Marty @ Nov 9th 2007 2:08PM
A month ago they said the game wouldn't make a holiday release, and now they are days away from going gold? It doesn't make me a troll to understand that rushed software is buggy software.
FidliousWong @ Nov 9th 2007 2:16PM
Actually, a month ago, MIDWAY said it wouldn't make a holiday release. Meanwhile, Mark Rein... the guy actually DEVELOPING it and not publishing it, said they were shooting for a holiday release still and they had plenty of faith they could make it.
Mark Rein has never changed this position.
Marty @ Nov 9th 2007 2:23PM
Where did I say that I was basing my opinion solely on the words of Mark Rein?
JodyAnthony (Good Eats Defense Force) @ Nov 9th 2007 2:00PM
I've only played like the very first Unreal Tournament game but it was pretty nifty. If this comes out this year I still won't be playing it until next year (way too much right now) but I might give it a rental in the spring.
hvnlysoldr @ Nov 9th 2007 8:42PM
Good Eats rules.
I have no real comment on UT3 since I can barely handle RE4 at the moment so I don't think I could put up much of a fight in UT3.
rdj75 @ Nov 9th 2007 2:02PM
They need to just give it up and ship it when its ready instead of trying to rush what would end up being a gimped version in some way.
FidliousWong @ Nov 9th 2007 2:04PM
I see Kyle Orland buzzed over the part where Mark Rein said they are just a couple days from going gold. Oh well, it'll take me weeks before my JTHM model is done and rigged enough to use on the PS3 version regardless.
Jeff @ Nov 9th 2007 2:08PM
Wow, some posters on this thread are retarded.
The reason it isn't out yet is because Epic doesn't release things until they're finished! That's why UT3 never had an official release date until it had gone gold, and why the ps3 version won't definitely get released before Christmas-- because if they aren't absolutely happy with it, it won't be released.
Jeff @ Nov 9th 2007 2:09PM
Either way, great game. Being able to play ut3 with keyboard and mouse would make ps3 a great option at $399 if someone didn't want to sell their soul to afford a gaming rig.
Marty @ Nov 9th 2007 2:14PM
You can spend less than the cost of a PS3 to buy a new video card for your PC, which would make it better than any of the current gen consoles.
FidliousWong @ Nov 9th 2007 2:19PM
Provided his current PC has the architecture to handle a new video card like your saying. Or the VC is compatible with his PCI-E slot speed, assuming he is running PCI-E. Or his power supply can handle the increased power drain. And if he goes with the DX10 card, there is the very real possibility he may not even have the space in his PC. You assume much, Marty. For many people, a VC upgrade comes with a huge system revamp.
Dreamcicle @ Nov 9th 2007 2:26PM
This game is very, very scaleable. Most console games only run at what a PC would consider "medium".
If you already have a computer (you're posting on joystiq...) most people only need maybe a motherboard, CPU, and video upgrade. To get a decent playable experience you can do it for about $300.
Solomon @ Nov 9th 2007 2:35PM

"If you already have a computer (you're posting on joystiq...) most people only need maybe a motherboard, CPU, and video upgrade. To get a decent playable experience you can do it for about $300."
I don't have a PC and it would take more than the $200 I spent on my PS3(60GB)to get a PC to play it. Thanks
and yes I paid $200. anyone could get a PS3(40GB) for $299 still
Marty @ Nov 9th 2007 2:35PM
Fidlious, I am fully aware of the costs of upgrading - I just bought a new computer myself, and assembled it from parts. I had to upgrade the entire thing because it didn't have a PCI-E slot on it. Costed me about $1200... but the amount of functionality it offers me, and the speed, is so far beyond my 360, a PS3, or anything else, it was worth the money.
But you shouldn't mind if I point out that just about any computer with a PCI-E slot on it (and a reasonably speedy CPU), would benefit greatly from a $350 video card.
Dreamcicle @ Nov 9th 2007 2:40PM
All I'm saying is most people wouldn't need to sell a testicle to be able to play PC games. There's this perception that PC gaming requires $3000 every 6 months or you're playing at 5 FPS at minimum settings at 640x480. I had a seriously old computer (back from 2000-1 ish) that could still play F.E.A.R. at a decent framerate. In grand total I think I spent maybe 250 bucks over 5 years.
Those who complain that dropping to 29 FPS at 1900x1200 at max settings is completely unplayable are graphics whores with way too much money.
Marty @ Nov 9th 2007 2:45PM
I agree Dreamcicle... like I mentioned above, my PC only cost me about $1200, and that included a brand new 22" widescreen LCD. PC gaming isn't that expensive, especially if you don't mind building your own computer.
Dreamcicle @ Nov 9th 2007 2:49PM
Do you mind posting the specs? I've been thinking about building a new computer soon. It gets all the games I want except for the Nintendo gold.
FidliousWong @ Nov 9th 2007 3:00PM
You could mention most PCs have PCI-E slots, but that wasn't standard until about two years ago. Not everyone has that recent of a computer.
You also assume many people are RUNNING dedicated video cards when most consumer level PC's still ship with integrated 3D. Even if you're buying a GeForce 7800 level card, there is the very real possibility they may need a bigger power supply. The price of upgrade is based upon them already HAVING a gaming PC.
I mean, from my stance, I see the cheapness of upgrading. But I'm currently running SLi 7800GTs. But I recently upgraded a family members PC and it was nearly $900. It wasn't a simple VC upgrade.
Dreamcicle @ Nov 9th 2007 3:10PM
Fidlious, I already said a motherboard with a pci-e slot, videocard, and processor should only be about $300. Toss in a gig of ram $350.
Motherboards having on-board video chips does not mean that they can't add in a video card. All this involves having to open up that scary case, but you save a ton of money. It's really not hard at all.
Jeff @ Nov 9th 2007 3:20PM
To get a "playable" experience? C'mon, you could get close to top-tier graphics on a $400 ps3. And I'm solely a PC gamer. I'm just saying if cost is a huge priority consoles are always a better bet than a PC, especially when you can use keyboard and mouse.
GRANTED @ Nov 9th 2007 3:31PM
i have a laptop because i'm not a LOSER WITH A GLOWING BOX UNDER MY DESK hahaha. have fun "playing" at your desk, i'll be on my sofa, feet up, having a beer. even with my 32 inch lcd hdtv, my gaming setup (incl. the couch) is cheaper than yours. and i don't have to sweat when thinking about next year's game specs.
Dreamcicle @ Nov 9th 2007 3:39PM
That's funny. Funny, I don't see any glowing under my desk either. At least I'm not a loser with a tiny ass 32" tv. That's small, even for a bedroom. At least you got your couch.
T2 @ Nov 9th 2007 2:17PM
My first concern when reading this is that I hope they're not pushing it out just to make the holiday. I'd much rather have a game that has been properly tested, and is released when fully ready. I don't want to purchase the game and be a beta tester.
Since this is a triple AAA title, I'd like to think that they're not rushing it, and it is, in fact ready.
The Dude @ Nov 9th 2007 2:19PM
Jeff is pretty much right . . . Epic is known for putting out very finished products. You have to remember that this game is meant for the multiplayer: there are ALWAYS bugs missed in online multiplayer games and they ALWAYS need some sort of update (Halo 2/3 had updates, did they not? it didn't make them bad games). Epic just wants to make sure that they've caught everything they possibly can, but you can only go so far testing these games in a closed setting.
sensay @ Nov 9th 2007 2:21PM
I am getting the PC version this month, and I am eagerly awaiting the ps3 version as well...is it possible to play a PC opponent versus a PS3 opponent online, I believe they were talking about that option?
Dreamcicle @ Nov 9th 2007 2:27PM
Yeah, in an interview with Rein he said "No."
They were polishing both systems to their strengths and there would be no cross platform play.
Marty @ Nov 9th 2007 2:41PM
No, it's not possible.
RC @ Nov 9th 2007 2:22PM
This can't be true. The Wii and xbot trolls told me yesterday that this was a Sony bait and switch. Evil Sony.
Cyro @ Nov 9th 2007 2:36PM
This cant be!! WTF!!! It has to be delayed!!!!
*Gets back to troll cave kicking everything in sight*
Jake @ Nov 9th 2007 2:36PM
There are serious financial reasons to get a game out before Christmas. Everyone no doubt wants to get the thing out really, really bad. They are trying hard and it is going to come very close, apparently. But Epic won't ship a broken game, plain and simple. If they can't finish they can't finish.
Cyro @ Nov 9th 2007 2:38PM
They should've done a port from the 360, like everyone else. Its too darn hard to program for the damm thing.
Bucket @ Nov 10th 2007 1:32AM
I see what you did there.
To everyone else: RTFA, you'll see where he says something to the effect of "We've been developing games for years, and the PS3 isn't any harder to develop for than any other new piece of hardware". Of course, some of us know this; we remember when getting our hands on some new CPU and squeezing it for everything it's worth USED TO BE FUN. That's right, programming used to be FUN. Atari 2600, NES, GameBoy Advance, Genesis, TurboGrafx16: all great consoles to develop for-- and it was nothing like programming on a PC.
Unless you weren't kidding... then you are also an idiot who needs to RTFA.
RC @ Nov 9th 2007 2:43PM
@cyro, not according to infinity ward.
Dreamcicle @ Nov 9th 2007 2:46PM
Inifinity Ward is tobias.
DBX00 @ Nov 9th 2007 2:45PM
They have to get the product right because the product is a showcase for the Unreal Engine on the PS3; if they get it right, then it result in licensing fees for the next few years instead of additional sales from getting it out before Christmas. The game delay was a hedge on the publishers part and now we'll probably have a completed UT3 for the PS3 for the holidays. Get over it, even if it ends up being delay to January it isn't a significant delay. At any rate, having a solid engine will help smaller developers pump out product for the PS3 in 2008 and be good for the industry.
Crono (NDF - Knight of the Old School) @ Nov 9th 2007 3:26PM
For once, I agree with you.

xXFenixKnight13Xx @ Nov 9th 2007 3:30PM
Whats funny is that its gonna be out on teh 360s later on and it will eclipse the # of sales the PS3 version will have gotten by then. Even without the K+M option. Good move on Epics part to decide to make this multiplat instead of just PS3 exclusive. They know where the $$$ is. For now, plenty of games out b4 Ill be needing this one =)
aaron_k7 @ Nov 9th 2007 3:35PM
The UT3 demo looks badass on my PC; in this case PC wins. I may get COD4 for PS3, though, for the local multiplayer aspect. Does COD4 has split-screen though?
Zsavior @ Nov 9th 2007 3:52PM
I am sorry but with TF2 out I tried this demo thinking damn maybe I missed out on FPS all my life and I can see this. What a disappointment, maybe when FPS online shooters first started this was great, but now it just seems annoying.
In TF2 there are many things you can do if you are not great at one thing and still contribute. With UNReal it is like you have to get the right gun and know where that gun is or you are screwed. No matter how good you are if you get that Bio rifle in the game against another gun that can spray if every direction at once no matter how you move the Bio rifle will lose every time.
Like I said I am new to the FPS gaming but that sort of thing doesn't really equal fun to me. It is like MMO styled combat, my armor is better than yours doesn't really matter about your skill from there on out. But that is my opinion Unreal will still sell like gangbusters anyway and make plenty PS3 faithful happy.
GRANTED @ Nov 9th 2007 4:36PM
I feel the same way. UT3 is seen by a lot of people as a benchmark, but to me it's so damn standard. Just a run-and-gun FPS with no heart. every match is a race to the rocket launcher or whatever the BFG is this year. the reasons you described TF2 are why I like Warhawk--I end up using the majority of the weapons/vehicles at least once per match, it's good balance.
Much more excited for orange box PS3 release than this--but I hope it's out before Xmas, maybe a dozen more people will buy the console for it.
Dreamcicle @ Nov 9th 2007 4:41PM
You contradicted yourself there. You say you're new. So why do you expect to be able to take people down with a bio rifle (it's possible but not really newbie friendly)?
Unreal tournament is still cream of the crop for arcade style shooters. It's all about speed, skill, accuracy, and big ass weapons.
