Make your own Blu-ray phaser

For the cost of one replica Star Trek phaser and one PlayStation 3, you can have your own blue-beamed version of Captain Kirk's weapon of choice. It's a steep price, to be sure, but think of how impressed the ladies at the Sci-Fi Expo would be with this sexy piece of machinery in hand. What would Shatner do?

Instructables has the full rundown on how to turn your gaming monolith into futuristic weaponry. Now we just have to wait for someone to create an HD-DVD phaser, and watch as millions of fanboys argue about which one is better.

Wow... uh... so someone... yeah... I give up on life at this point.

Sorry to hijack the first post with something unrelated to it, but this needed to go near the top of the comment list.

This thing is DANGEROUS. The intensity of the light emitted by this diode (with this amount of power) is enough that mere reflections can damage eyesight. Nevermind accidentally looking into a reflection; goodbye to that eye. Note that the camera's CCD is saturated at the point on the wall... While I do not deny this is cool, the Instructables link and post are irresponsibly lackadaisical about safety.

People who work with lasers in labs have goggles specially designed to eliminate almost 100% of the wavelengths their lasers emit. Unless you use the same, I really can't recommend this project. It is not a laser pointer, could likely pop balloons, and probably could light a match.

The laser lab motto, "Do not look into the laser with your remaining good eye," is uncomfortably close to the truth. Be careful if you are trying this!

So you mean I could make this, run into my classroom, and blind everyone, then claim I didn't know it had such effects?

Yea first thing I thought when I saw this was "Uhh is that laser safe???" and imagined someone pointing it at their head for an hour and getting some form of cancer. Had no idea it could really be some futuristic space age laser that can light matches... shit

lol, you can buy blue laser diodes alone for cheaper than the cost of scrapping your PS3.
or you could buy a $300 Blu-ray player(Toshiba HD-A3) and harvest the diode.

use the laser to blind, then move in for a melee kill.

It can kill someone if it's thrown fast enough against the head of a foe or at least hurt the foe pretty bad but have in mind that you are spending 599$ USD plus the price of the device when rocks are free.

Um, it said in the video that he just bought a ps3 DIODE for $45, he never took apart a ps3.

Of course an HD-DVD phaser would be identical - they use the same bloody blue-violet wavelength lasers!

Or save a few hundred dollars and use a blue LED and set up some mirrors.

They use the same laser, so that essentially IS an HD DVD phaser. Do your research.
