Thrill as the DualShock 3 is unboxed!
Have you ever seen anything so ... boxed in your entire life? What wouldn't you give to see that hot little piece of rumbling plastic shed its outer layer to reveal the deliciousness within, like some sort of be-dual-sticked piece of electronic corn?
... OK, so we can't claim to understand unboxing fetishists entirely, but we can at least try to make up for it by appealing to their basest desires. Engadget Tokyo has one of the first retail DualShock 3s and they're taking the clamshell off ... slow.

Hold da baby.
JodyAnthony (Good Eats Defense Force) @ Nov 12th 2007 10:45AM
the white controller looks nice
F. Rocker or Fernando R.? @ Nov 12th 2007 10:58AM
Yeah... it kinda reminds the color of other controllers...
Trev @ Nov 12th 2007 11:11AM
Because all white things are clearly a ripoff.
AirIntake @ Nov 12th 2007 11:21AM
Perhaps Fenix will only purchase a Playstation product once they get with it and move the analog stick? That's where I've been ever since the PS2. I'm sorry, but since the D-pad is only used
xXFenixKnight13Xx @ Nov 12th 2007 10:47AM
Stop being retards Sony!!! Switch the D-Pad and left analog already!! Now that would kick @$$!!!
F. Rocker or Fernando R.? @ Nov 12th 2007 10:49AM
That would be nice.
elpmis @ Nov 12th 2007 10:49AM
I like the controller the way it is. If you switch the analog with the d-pad it'll screw up Street Fighter 4.
xXFenixKnight13Xx @ Nov 12th 2007 10:55AM
Ummmmm no it wont
RTYPE1124 @ Nov 12th 2007 11:05AM
@xXFenixKnight13Xx
I was wondering if you ever kept count of how many times a day you say "brah". Seriously why would the analog placement matter to you? You don't own a PS3 and probably never will so why even bother sharing any of your unintelligible babble with us. Just goes to show that "13" in your name represents your maturity and intelligence.
xXFenixKnight13Xx @ Nov 12th 2007 11:32AM
@ RTYPE1124
Wow........
Your the idiot!!!!! I still own a PS2, you remember that one?!!
Sure ya do its THE SAME CONTROLLER... "BRAH!!" Lol!! I have Call of Duty: Big Red One and COD3. The games were great but wouldve been better with the Dpad and analog switched. Im not the only one with this opinion you moron take your stupid insults to PS3 Fanboy. As for getting a PS3, well when they do indeed get a "Must Have" title then Ill buy it. Right now 360 and Wii is all I need. =)
Trev @ Nov 12th 2007 11:54AM
You really seem to have gone out of your way to prove RTYPE1124 right. Maybe not the best choice.

i don't know. i have a PS3 but some of my friends have 360's and i can say that i don't really like that offset analog setup the 360 has. i feel more comfortable with the Playstation setup especially when running around using the camera. and since alot of games now use the front buttons to shoot and stuff, my thumbs are mostly on the analogs sticks all the time.
regardless, it all comes down to personal preference, so how can anyone say that their opinion is fact? i believe this is the reason they have different setups anyway. choice.
ulovemikeroch @ Nov 12th 2007 10:33PM
Are you fucking retarded? Please leave. Putting the damn Analog stick to the left like 360 controller would be horrible for SF4 or any other fighting game. Have you ever played a fighting game? Have you even attempted one using an Analog Stick? It's terrible, probably as bad but probably not as bad as that crappy DPad on the 360.
Poisoned Al @ Nov 12th 2007 10:48AM
It's like the last 10 years never happened.

Brucie B @ Nov 12th 2007 10:49AM
WOW Great Contoller!!! Ohhh Wait, It's the same d@mn thing since PS1, W/ Waggle ohhh yea & Now Rumble!?!? lmao
F. Rocker or Fernando R.? @ Nov 12th 2007 10:56AM
But at least it's TouchSense tech... oh wait...
Dale @ Nov 12th 2007 11:30AM
It's not the same as the PlayStation One controller. The original didn't have an analogue stick (let alone two of them), rumble, wireless or motion sensitivity.
I'm no Sony fanboy by any means (I'm a Wii60 owner), but their original, basic shape has lasted so long because it is exceptionally comfortable to use... hence the outcry over their bizarre boomerang prototype.
F. Rocker or Fernando R.? @ Nov 12th 2007 11:33AM
Of course it's not like the original PS1.
First, they take the analog stick from the N64 controller, then the rumble from the Rumble Pak, then the wireless part from the Wavebird and the motion from the Wii Remote.
Cyro @ Nov 12th 2007 12:15PM
Damm that was harsh....
Vidikron (FU) @ Nov 12th 2007 12:21PM
@Fernando
Perhaps they were following Nintendo's lead, but the dual-analog sticks they added has had a huge impact on consoles games. Arguably one of the biggest and best controller changes ever. Also, wireless controllers were around long before the Wavebird. The technology just wasn't that reliable until fairly recently. For that matter, so was feedback/rumble. And building it into the controller and having it powered by the console was a big improvement as well. Again, maybe they were simply improving other people's ideas, but they were good changes... changes that Nintendo then copied, BTW.
Evan @ Nov 12th 2007 1:27PM
Vidikron: I for one never used the sticks on any games on the original PS1. Maybe because they placed them in retarded locations?
SugarDaddy @ Nov 12th 2007 10:55AM
Wow... the same... exact... controller... Good job? Without getting into Sony vs MS debate (please), the 360 controller womps this antiquated p.o.s.
GRANTED @ Nov 12th 2007 11:03AM
360 controller is a little more ergonomic but honestly people, there's not much difference. Sony likes doing things Their Way, just like Ninty does.
Frankly, I've never had a problem with the Dualshock or Sixaxis so this doesn't really bother me either. I mean, I just spent the weekend playing a very fucking intense FPS, for four-hour intervals, and no complaints.
At least the charging mechanism is the best of any controller.
Crono (NDF - Knight of the Old School) @ Nov 12th 2007 11:14AM
Charging by plugging in is the best? Perhaps in the retard race of sony having the only controller with rechargable batteries. But as far as 3rd party solutions go, I'd have to give the award to the Nyko charge station for Wii.
Unsightly cords, even if temporary, are never a good thing.
NATO_Duke @ Nov 12th 2007 11:20AM
How is the charge sytem the best? You have no choice but to plug in the whole controller! (With that short cord they give you, unless you buy an extended one.)
Wouldn't the better recharge option be a removable battery pack, so you can swap out? Instead, you think the best design is also the one that when the battery dies the whole controller has to be ditched for a new one?
bl13 @ Nov 12th 2007 11:22AM
Neither is $30 for an accessory to charge your controllers.
GRANTED @ Nov 12th 2007 11:23AM
Imagine if the Nyko charging station came with your Wii, and was actually built into it. Now imagine it let you play with the Wiimote while it was charging. That's the Sixaxis (and apparently the Dualshock3). It's not a third-party solution. It comes with the system.
1. I don't have to pay extra for a charging station.
2. The cord is hidden in a drawer until I need it.
3. When I do need to charge the controller, I take out the USB cord and plug it in to the PS3 and the controller, and keep playing with a wired controller for those 30 minutes (if I don't feel like ending my play session).
No batteries + no extra peripherals = no extra cost and never un-playable. So, yeah, that is the best charging solution.
AirIntake @ Nov 12th 2007 11:23AM
The best design is one that uses standard AA's. Rechargeable 15 minute NiMHs are so far an excellent solution for controller batteries.
Trev @ Nov 12th 2007 11:32AM
Not only does the PS3 controller last upwards of five hours from the time the battery warning pops up, but when you finally decide to plug it in, it doesn't actually interrupt play; it just works.
You can also use any length USB cable, so unlike the 360 play and charge kit, you don't have a proprietary cable or the Wii where you have nothing without buying a separate charge station.
I happened to have a 10 foot USB extension sitting around from a printer, which lets me sit just about anywhere in my living room, provided I'm really /that/ opposed to swapping controllers with the extremely easy and convenient interface for that. It really is just press a button and tell the controller to take over the #1 slot.
Say what you want about the physical design, because that's entirely opinion and you're entitled to it, but I really can't think of a way to make the PS3 controller/charging setup more convenient.
Vidikron (FU) @ Nov 12th 2007 11:40AM
@Crono
You do realize you can buy a charge station for the PS3 controllers too, right?
@NATO
While not exactly the most convenient thing... you can swap out the batters in the PS3 controller. There are even instuctions on how to do so in the manual included with the PS3. But I guess no one reads those these days.
I do think it would have been smarter to have the option to use normal batteries, but I don't think it's that big of a deal. At least it doesn't fly through batteries/charges as fast as the Wii... though I'm sure battery life will take a hit with the rumble added back in.
SugarDaddy @ Nov 12th 2007 11:53AM
You guys are actually debating the intricate differences between the charging solutions? Wow. I just use spare battery packs for my 360. I've never lost juice during a game and've never had to use the play-n-charge crap. A very minor point.
Once you get your hands wrapped around a 360 controller, this junker will feel like you're playing NES.
NATO_Duke @ Nov 12th 2007 12:00PM
Vid - When it comes to taking a controller apart to swap the battery or getting a new controller - I would guess people would get a new one from Sony instead.
I dont think the Sixaxis can be called the best system as far as recharge goes. I would rather have battery packs that can be easily swapped out as they die in the middle of a game. Just makes more sense to me.
Vidikron (FU) @ Nov 12th 2007 12:00PM
@Sugar
You've never lost charge while playing? I play till it dies almost every time. The only exception might be when I'm playing online. I've always heard that rechargeable batteries will last longer if drained completely before recharging. My 360 sits directly in front of where I sit so using the plan-n-charge cable is not that big a deal to me.
Alienhead @ Nov 12th 2007 10:57AM
WOW! THAT"S FREAKiNG AWESOME!!!!!
Wait that's the same crap as before. I wish they would have made the boomarang.
NATO_Duke @ Nov 12th 2007 11:02AM
Agreed. It would at leeast be something different. Kind of sad to think of being excited over getting the same tech thats been around for so long now.
GRANTED @ Nov 12th 2007 11:32AM
I just wish the damn PS button in the middle lit up. It does on the packaging. False advertisement...
WiNG @ Nov 12th 2007 11:58AM
As much as people dissed the boomerang, they really should have made it. It would have been kind of revolutionary for ergonomics, judging by the videos I've seen. Sure it was "funny" but so was the name "Wii". Now nintendo is laughing... all the way to the bank.
This controller is a PS2 rehash and IS last gen. Let's think of the main problem, the left analog stick placement.
1. Dreamcast
2. Gamecube
3. Xbox
4. Xbox 360
5. SEGA FUCKING SATURN
These are systems that have put the analog stick in the correct, upper left position. Sony has been married to its dualshock 2 design for god knows what reason.
I did not list N64 or Wii, but both of those are also better.
Also, PSP's analog nub is poorly placed.
Goddammit Sony what is wrong with you. Fucking Sega Saturn had a better controller.
ShortFuse @ Nov 12th 2007 11:01AM
So the only difference with the Dual Shock 2 is the analog L2/R2 and Tilt Support? Assassin's Creed doesn't use the analog triggers on the 360 and I don't see how tilt could be incorporated. Sony should really release a firmware including rumble support for Dual Shock 2 controllers (if you connnect via USB)
why not the LS2/LS7? @ Nov 12th 2007 7:15PM
How about it's wireless and rechargeable?
I swear, what a bunch of gimps on here.
Shockgamer @ Nov 12th 2007 11:03AM
Sony does not care about big hands!! [/Kanye]
NATO_Duke @ Nov 12th 2007 11:21AM
I have trouble using the sixaxis triggers. Do they work ok for folks with smaller hands?
bl13 @ Nov 12th 2007 11:29AM
They work okay but it's puzzling why they're convex instead of concave.
WiNG @ Nov 12th 2007 12:03PM
They are convex because next gen doesn't start till Sony says it does. "Ergonomic" and "comfort" are last-gen features. That is why the Gamecube controller, with its "last gen" concave, analog triggers with terminal button click was worthless.
You know concave triggers were used on Dreamcast and Sega Saturn. LAST GEN! If you understood the future of gaming, you would know convex is next gen, and thus only for PS3. Even listen to the words
CAVE: like cavemen! haha LAST GEN!
VEX: Ohhh what does it mean? Well it sounds futuristic!
NATO_Duke @ Nov 12th 2007 11:04AM
I am gonna let someone else attack you for acting like Assassin's Creed is the measure. I just wanted to warn you that it would more than likely happen.
NATO_Duke @ Nov 12th 2007 11:05AM
That was directed at ShortFuse.
The reply system seems really slow today on my end.
