Joystiq reader hex08 sends us this image highlighting the differences between the US and Japanese versions of Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction. (Also enjoy this Japanese commercial.) It should be noted, however, that this isn't the first time Ratchet has been visually modified for regional preferences. Check out the highlights for today:

Crash also gets "anime-ified" for the Japanese market.

His eyes... it's like Ratchet became Anime-esque like Homer became MR. SPARKLE!

Japanese Ratchet looks awful. It's amazing that small changes like those affect the character so drastically, and make it appear to be poor character design.

Are you trying to point out that the American Ratchet has a larger penis than the Asian Ratchet?

You made me cough! Darn ear infection. Grumble...
So Sony is saying tough attitude for America and cute for Japan? I see where Sonic got that influence now...

The American Ratchet's bigger smile confirms your hypothesis Clack. I mean it makes sense:
"This isn't the first time Ratchet has been visually modified for regional preferences."

HA! HA-*HA*! That's what you GET, Japan, for thinking us Americans were too stupid to play the real Super Mario Bros 2 back in the 80's! – CRAPPY CHARACTER DESIGN! How do ya like THEM apples?!?

Yes the American version of Ratchet definitely has a bigger crotch than the Japanese version
Thanks for pointing that out

I think his pants aren't tucked in. But way to focus on an animated characters crotch (naked peach can be forgiven).

I get the joke, but it's pointing out the different pants design and color.

Ratchet gets cataracts, big black eyebrows, and neutered. Japan gets all the good stuff.

if you ask me those two pictures just have a slightly different hue and print quality, nothing more

wow if you can't see at least the eyebrow difference than you must be partially blind or something

Japanese Rachet's tits jiggle when he walks.

Trying not to think about this too much, but if they hadn't removed it for the Japanese version, would anyone had noticed? I mean the Western Ratchet is hardly threatening is he?

The color of the Japanese pants looks better with the rest of it, but other than that, the US version is better looking. Friggin eyebrows...

I do find it ironic that we (I'm in the US) apparently can't handle a meaner looking Ratchet, when we have games like Manhunt. I know Manhunt is censored (without a hack, at least)...but come on.
Come to think of it, that would make an interesting spoof. Ratchet choking robots with piano wire.
And yes, I'm tired, so leave me alone and goodnight. :P

Ratchet had a much meaner look in Deadlocked, and I thought it looked corny. Ratchet might like to blow stuff up, but he's still a good-natured guy.
Those eyebrows and soul-less eyeballs take the cake, though. That's what happens when you accidentally max out the setting on your Stunderwear(TM).

So the Japanese prefer creepy, soulless eyes and... green pants?
It's amazing the things marketers can figure out these days.

Don't forget pedophile eyebrows and an effeminite figure for male characters.
