Finally: folders for videos on your PS3
24
One of the lesser known tricks of PS3 firmware 2.00 is the ability to organize videos into folders, a request that many have had since the system's launch. So how do you use this magical feature? Simple. Press Triangle on any video, and edit the Album Information. Press Square from the XMB, and you'll be able to sort by a variety of options. One is the ability to sort by Albums, which will let you finally have a clean way of organizing your videos. Excellent.

You guys forgot that you can do it with Games too! I got all my Demos, Ps1, PSN, and Apps (ie EyeCreate & Home) seperated into seperate folders! It's pretty awesome. You just follow the same steps BTW.

I didn't realize that was a 2.0 exclusive feature, I figured it was just an option I never tried before.

I'm sorry to say, but this is one feature that should have been there from the beginning, as should the (still-awaited) support for Divx. It seems the PS2's life-cycle is not quite over and even now, the PS3 is still getting 'finished'. I love it to pieces, but this seems to be part of the price of being 'ahead of your time' (same goes for the PSP).

I organized my games the same way!

Hey Crash -
I was able to have it auto-sort my games in to PSone and PS3 games, but how'd you get it to separate into demos, aps, etc?

You have to change the game info. Same way as videos

Ok, so according to your reasoning, because the feature SHOULD have been there since the beginning, that makes it useless NOW, right?
If I can use it now, I will use it now.

This a great feature that definitely should have been there from the beginning...but I have one big gripe...WHY CAN'T I HAVE ANIMATED THUMBNAILS WHEN I ORGANIZE THE MEDIA IN FOLDERS??? I know it sounds lame but I loved the way the video thumbnails would play a few seconds of the video. I liked that feature so much that I had selected specific scenes as a preview image for every video. Now I have them organize but I can't see the mini videos :( :( . Why do video game icons are still animated and videos aren't? Come on Sony I know the Cell chip can handle more than that!!!

I didnt even know about this. I changed the icons to some of my movies but the preview doesnt play on the icons. Jut stills. Are they suppose to play?

I must agree with #9!
Why oh why the animated thumbnails freeze when I put them in folders. MAKES NO SENSE AT ALL.
CELL WAS SUPPOSE TO MOVE THE WORLD!!!

Did you all also missed the new bookmark in the Internet Browser in firmware 2.00? Some new Internet Filter functionality.

What is the easiest way to move videos to the PS3 and play them? It won't recognize my external HDD (Seagate 150GB). What is the best way to convert videos to a format that the PS3 will recognize? Until I get this far, the organization part is pretty useless...and whats with people saying Assassin's Creed is just ok? Is it really good? COD 4 is really good. I know its not fair to compare the two, but do you get a similar sense of enjoyment, or do you come away feeling that it was overhyped?

When you change the icon of a video, it takes 15 seconds of it and loops it. It will show on the list of videos you have.
And it will show it when is not put into folders. That is my gripe. The feature has been there since day one (the nice 15 second loop on the videos) but putting those same videos into a folder robs them of their 15 second loop when you are browsing them. It shows them just as stills.
I say that SUCKS. Why does that happen? Why cannot the PS3 show me that nifty 15 second loop when said file is inside a folder?

@12: It's a software, and not a hardware issue. Someone on the dev team just probably overlooked it (I know I would have).
Got a 40GB model yesterday BTW... haven't even had the time to fall in love yet haha :o)

Fascinating how many of you can get anything(including the writer here) to show on the screen. I've owned the system since January and have never seen any mini video pop up for my demos or trailers. I've looked in the option menu, but haven't found any way to turn it on. Anyone here to help?
Posted: Nov 14th 2007 10:24AM (Unverified) said
@19: Trailers don't have video icon previews unless you set them by hand. Play the trailer then hit triangle while it's playing. There's a crazy icon you choose that lets you set the start point for the animated icon. I can't remember which one but it's on the top row, center.
Games don't do it either. Some games have a background and a splash, some play music, some just sit there...it's up to the devs to implement. On the PSP you can change these by hand with some trickery, and I imagine the same could be done on the PS3 eventually.
The funny thing about these updates is that rather than saying 'wow what a cool feature, it's useful' we say "YA BUT WHAT ABOUT DIVX, WHAT ABOUT HAND JOBS?!". We really are a bunch of spoiled brats, but 90% of the time it's not strictly PS3 owners, it's people that own both big consoles.
