Could be because he's been a mascot for 25 years where this guy, forgive me, I'm not Canadian, hasn't been around as long? A more balanced poll should be comparing him to a gaming character released around the time that this chap got nationally known.

It's because Mario has done more in Canada's War on Koopas than Harper has. People see him as more of a hero.

We had a similar thing in the US. More ppl recognized Leonardo Dicappio than the former vice president Al Gore. Of course Gore's campaign wasn't as mainstream nor equally box office grossing as the film Leo was in, which added significantly to all that
