No doubt amused by a ridiculous process of elimination that prompted game developers to rush to their keyboards and confirm the continued existence of their upcoming third-person role-playing whatever-em-ups, 1UP has revealed that the first-party Xbox 360 title supposedly skirting around cancellation is none other than Marvel Universe Online. In an echo of True Fantasy Live Online's demise, the MMO has reportedly run into "serious, potentially stalling, development troubles," the least of which is likely to be the monotony resulting from everyone playing as Wolverine.
Aside from a mysterious source, 1UP cites a suspicious inability by the project's collaborators to outright confirm the game's on-going development. Though Microsoft insists that Cryptic's recent sale of two Cities has no bearing on Marvel Universe Online, the developer hasn't so much as mentioned the game when discussing upcoming projects. Not a particularly convincing chain of evidence, but it does seem a tad quiet when shook.

Why would this be the case? Cryptic Studios just sold CoX to NC, they have the whole work force on this now.

"The 360 needs a good MMO"
Where did you arrive at that conclusion?

Square's announced another FF MMO that will hit 360 at some indefinite point (along with Vista). Sakaguchi has talked about doing an MMO for 360 after Lost Odyssey. PSO and Too Human are picking up the slack on the instanced multiplayer online dungeon crawl front, and you've still got that Huxley thing out there, somewhere.
I think we're covered.

I really think all this is nothing but publicity for 1up. I mean really any game can be cancelled and the High up exec leaving could happen at anytime, remember Peter Moore. People change jobs all the time but after all this crap, I'll just wait. Right now all I smell is bullshit. But it did get people talking about 1up-yours, kinda funny huh.

The last thing Pc gamers need is more MMO´s.
We have enough of those, what about adventure games for a change?
To be honest I was a Sony fanboy and I never saw myself playing a XB360 especially after my experience with King kong in Mix up until Gears of war arrived then I looked forward to several XB360 games in case I decided to get one and only 3 of them interested me
Dead Rising, Viva Piñata and Marvel Universe Online.
After that I got my Xb360 and I still love it but the cancellation of this title just makes me sad.

Like the Blizzard kids would give this MMO the time of day.
I hope this game isn't cancelled, as it'd suck to not be able to play in the better comic universe. (Oh yeah, I went there.)

well the only fantasy mmo i've ever tolerated was warcraft, i played it for 5 months but then cancelled. i'll try the conan one next year, but that's the only non-superhero mmo i'm looking forward to.

Anytime Shane and a microsoft commit come into place I just ignore it. Shane is the spokesman for all that is Sony.

It was kind of obvious.
It was this game or Lost odyssey or Kingdom Under fire and both Lost odyssey and Kuf have release dates.
January and February if I'm not mistaken
I remind you that Too Human doesn't counts.

Sounds to me more like a publicity stunt. but even if it isn't cancelled I doubt Marvel Ultimate Online will do good. Like Joystiq said everybody playing as wolverine would kind of, a hell, WOULD get boring.

This is what Shane tried to get everyone stirred up about?! Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see a Marvel MMO, but Shane made the whole thing out to be something 360 owners would be devastated over. Seriously, Shane tries way too hard sometimes. What a douche.

Okay. Lets be real here. A Marvel Universe MMO is just a bad fucking idea, let alone a DC Universe MMO. Why? Because everyone would want to play as their favorite comic book heroes/villians. Can you imagine how many people would want to play Wolverine, or Superman? Too fucking many. Lets also not forget that there would be serious balance issues in the gameplay, and not to mention that we already have a super hero based MMO called "City of Heros/Villans" for the PC, which is STILL having issues of people trying to recreate their favorite comic book heroes/villians.

This is a "big title"? This isn't Alan Wake or Fable 2. It's like someone announcing that Kane & Lynch might be cancelled. NO ONE CARES.
(Correct my memory, isn't PSO:U an MMO?)
I could say, "A major PS3 title will be cancelled soon!" and sooner or later it'll come true.
The fact that Shane did not name a game means he's tossing shit on a wall to see if it will stick. At some point a 360 game will be cancelled for whatever reason, and Shane can point at it and say, "Told ya!" without having any sources.
This is called BAD JOURNALISM. And if you remember EGM's practice of reviewing unfinished builds of games, they're not exactly new to it.

Wow. I was kind of looking forward to this. But what about the DC MMORPG that Jim Lee was supposed to be working on for the PS3? That was far more intriguing than this.
And Jonah, what Shane heard was more specific than just "an Xbox 360 game," but rather a Microsoft game, which Marvel Universe Online is (was?) He also said that someone would be losing their job, if anyone heard the podcast. That's still up in the air.

I was expecting this game to be cancelled. I doubt that there would have been much of a following. WOW, EQ, and FFXI all have their followers and it is going to take something more than the possibility of a Marvel MMO to get them to switch.

Guys you wouldn't play AS wolverine, or batman, but you could do missions for them or with them. That's how these games would be implemented, a player created superhero would choose to side with any number of factions on either side of the good/evil line. Imagine how cool it'd be to be a villain character and storm the x-mansion with sabretooth and sabotage cerebro or something sinister...pretty damned cool if you ask me.
