DivX, Inc. today revealed a partnership with Sony to integrate its video playback technology into PlayStation 3. While a consumer-targeted firmware update has not been dated, developers who update their SDKs to version 2.00 can already utilize the DivX decoder technology for use in their games. But who cares about games anymore? With DivX support enabled (hopefully in the near future) for PS3 owners, a lot of that juicy BitTorrent content you've compulsively horded on your basement PC can be effortlessly streamed upstairs to the console. Now if they'd just add Xvid support you could finally cut the cable bill altogether...
[Note: Xbox 360 is not natively compatible with DivX or Xvid formats, though DivX support has been rumored to be included in the pending Fall Update.]

Very nice, I just hope Microsoft follows suit and supports DivX as well, though their rumored to be doing so.
Though the PS3 has a huge advantage though, you can copy ANY media to the PS3 HDD, movies, photos, and music and you can copy gamesaves to ANY media. So unlike the Xbox 360 (even though its still my preferred platform for muticonsoles games, I do have to admit is full of DRMs), you can actually use the HDD for putting any media on there, not just stuff you download from their service.
So because of that, I can perfectly understand why people would want a bigger HDD for the PS3 (which the Xbox 360 would allow you to use any 2.5 inch HDD as well), despite there is media streaming. It takes some hassle out of things and makes things more accessible. Though for both platforms, I just use a small portable USB HDD I originally got for my laptop ^^;.

I started using Tversity to stream stuff to my 360 from my PC. Seems to handle all kinds of formats pretty well, but sometimes it takes a while to buffer some HD content enough to start streaming. I also started using Tversity at work to stream audio to my iphone so I don't have to use the stupid iTunes crap (I almost want my old phone back since it ran Windows Mobile, drag-and-drop functionality and access to file folders like normal is so much better than using iTunes). I hear it works for PS3, but I don't have one.
Can we hijack this thread to talk about various media server software for our consoles? I want to know if there is other stuff like Tversity or Transcode360.

Finally. This, in addition to in-game XMB access, and personalized in-game music, will complete the trifecta of PS3 firmware awesomeness.

I would like situationally customizable soundtracks, rather than just playlists. Devil May Cry fight music has always been horrible, but I don't want to replace the rest of it. I realize it's more of a game developer's job to implement, but I want an in-game interface to say play X song from the HDD instead of playing Y song from the game disc.

"...just like cross platform games don't count in the "PS3 has no games" argument"
...Unless you're someone who only owns a PS3, so I have to disagree. It's easy to come on Joystiq and argue about all this, we all do, but we also need to remember not everyone owns all three systems like most of us nerds here. If you only own a PS3, you DO have games like Oblivion, GRAW2, CoD4, Rainbow 6, R&C, all the EA sports games, etc. You may have payed more than a 360 to play them, some might be sloppy ports, but the cross-platform games are just that: Games on a PS3.
It's a ignorant fanboy argument that doesn't really hold up anymore in my eyes.

To the 360 fanboys that hate everything about Sony and the PS3 and truly believe the console is actually a resurrection of Hitler himself, please put obligatory PS3 bashing comment here:

I figure it's gonna happen. Anytime something positive comes out of Sony's camp these days.

...but this also applies to the 'can be had cheaper somewhere else" comment: True, only If you don't own either a 360 or a PS3 yet, in which case the games are $59 on both platforms and you have to pay for LIVE to play them. But if you don't own one yet, NONE of those games matter to you yet... And if someone's yelling about the platform wars without actually getting involved, then what the f#$#% fanboy crap are they talking about anyway? We can't trust an opinion from someone like that! Someone not in the "Next Gen" fold! Joking there folks.
I still think the 360 is a better platform right now, but I'm not mad at the PS3 either. It's cool and tweaky. Eh, some people want HD movies on Blu Ray. Bluetooth headsets. Wifi. So the PS3 can do that for the price, while the 360 can't. To each their own.

Oh really granted? You got your complete PS3 setup for 270 dollars? Because thats what I did with my 360. Premium Console only off E-bay: 170 bucks, HDD 50 bucks, Cables 8 Bucks, Power supply 22 bucks. 2 Used controllers for 20 bucks. And this was 9 months ago.
ill trooper: It is still totally moronic to own both a PS3 AND a 360 because the majority of the titles that are worth owning on the PS3 are also on the 360. If you don't own either, and you're in the market for ONE, the 360 is easily the one to get, because the 360 EXCLUSIVES make it the superior platform. 50 bucks a YEAR for online play sucks, but that comes down to less than 4 bucks a month, and its optional if you don't play online, like me.
If you already own a PS3, then there isn't much reason to drop 300+ dollars on a 360 either. You'll just have to deal with missing out on the dozen or so really good EXCLUSIVE titles on 360. Likewise, a 360 owner will just have to deal with the half dozen or so exlusive PS3 games.
See what I did there?

I own all 3, and believe me each console is worth owning, except maybe the wii. My wife is telling me we should sell it on ebay, and she is the one who really thought it would be cool!!!
The PS3 is growing on me, I really like R&C and HS, even though I get all my cross platform games on 360 for achievements(yes I know I'm a whore).
I just like to bash the people who keep trying to say a console that costs 1-200$ more was a better value when there WAS (note, I didn't say is) nothing to play on it.
Almost as funny as the people who point out that havinga few new features throwin into a 2 year old game for its PS3 release is supposed to make up for the fact that half the world has tired of it already.
Mostly I just hate PS3 fanboys, Xbots at least have something to crow about this time around.

Wow, this is some positive news for the PS3.
If Sony continues to listen to their users like this, if the PS3 gets some desirable (to me) exclusive game content, and Blu-Ray wins the format war, I may be buying a PS3.
They may just turn this around yet... :)
Of course, I could be a dick and say that I bought a $20 DVD/DIVX player to handle my torrent goodies, but effortless streaming is the holy grail. It takes a few minutes less than burning a disc.

Some of don't have our entertainment centers anywhere near our computers and very few of us bother maintaining a second PC for HTPC useage. My PC is upstairs in an office and my HT is downstairs. But seeing as how I have my 360 and PS3 on my home network, these media center feaures are actually very handy and saves me from having to worry about adding another device in the form of a stand alone media extender or an HTPC.

Exactly, Vid.
I used to use a PC on my LCD TV for all my download content viewing as well. But I didn't have media center, Media Portal was too buggy at the time, and my PC was loud and fugly. After I got the 360, I moved the PC to the office where it belonged, and now I stream everything to the 360. Its quiet, elegant, and has a much nicer interface.

Here's a thought: why the hell do people upload torrents as DivX/XviD in the first place? h.264 is better quality, more efficient, and plays standard on more devices (PS3, iPhone, iPod, etc.).
Why don't people just upload as h.264 mp4 files and let DivX fade into obscurity?

How can Sony, who is such a huge backer of DRM (remember Rootkit) and such a huge backer of Blu-Ray and technolgies like HDCP add Divx support to their PS3? I mean, Divx only serves one purpose. Piracy.
Say whatever you want and give me all your goodie-two-shoes crap about how you "use Divx to make backups of your movies that you bought" we all know that 99.9% of Divx users are merely ripping and/or downloading movies. I'm not gonna lie, I do it to.
However, I feel that this is just another thing in a long line of desperate attempts on behalf of Sony to try and get anyone to buy a PS3. The $399.99 drop barely spiked sales, and they are now resulting to more or less approving playback of pirated movies/tv shows on their console to try and spike sales. The sad part is it will probably work. Let's just put it this way. Hollywood is in trouble if the wonder that is Divx gets discovered by mainstream users. It will suffer the same crisis that the music industry has. Which is why Sony, who has alot of stock in Hollywood is suprising me by doing this. Especially if you can stream said files. I have two Divx DVD players, one of which is a HD upconverting one, and I use them all the time. One of them even has a USB port that it will read movies off of, but I have long since been longing for streaming Divx support on my 360. If MS doesn't ante up soon, I may have to hunt down a used 20GB PS3 (the wisest choice of them all) and get my stream on.
I really have trouble seeing MS doing this though. It would essentially ruin any and all Marketplace TV show/movie sales. Moreso TV shows than movies, but still. I have heard rumors of MS adding in the feature for a long time, and I'm growing tired of waiting. It'll be interesting to see if MS matches Sony on this one or lets the Media congolmerates control the 360 the way they have controlled Vista.

Be aware that most Divx certified players can also play some xvid videos. My $60 Philips divx dvd player can play a majority of my xvid files as well. Xvid can be played on divx hardware as long as it is encoded within a certain specification.

however, unlike the ps3, the 360 is known to be one
of the worst upscalers, and its hd dvd add on is one of the worst hddvd players...(at least its consistent). it also only upscales if you have the hdmi version, which my 360 is NOT. it's hdmi is also inferior to ps3's. so not only did it copied ps3's hdmi feature... MS was too cheap to implement the same version if not
better.
also, just because you bought a used 360 on ebay doesn't mean it's cheaper to get a 360 with equivalent features to a ps3. how many times do ppl have to crunch the numbers for morons like you.
also bad ports for the ps3 is the developers fault. more competent developers:
codemasters,
bethesda,
infinity ward,
epic,
made and are making good versions for both consoles - dirt, oblivion, cod4, UT3. Besides, most of the multiplatform that scored well on the 360 plays WAY better on the pc, and there are no other game that i
actually like on the 360 that wasn't multiplatform.
i don't care about viva pinata, crackdown, halo3, blue dragon, lost odyssey, ace combat, or many of its other exclusives i can't even remember. xbox live may have good features, but i also have no need for them since i don't want to pay for p2p multiplayer while i get free dedicated servers on pc and the ps3.
and no i don't think mass effect will stay a 360 exclusive. just like knights of the old republic, which plays very similarly as mass effect and created by the same developer, it'll be ported to pc and i can wait cause i don't even care for this game.
but i care about motorstorm, resistance franchise (oh there better be a sequel!), MGS4, white knight story, heavenly sword, haze, r&c FF13, versus13, starocean4, uncharted BLU RAY, UT3 with MOUSE AND KEYBOARD SUPPORT, so i won't really bother upgrading my pc to see the game on decent settings. so unlike your hateful opinion, i don't think it's entirely moronic to own a ps3, rather it makes a lot of sense, at least for me, to do so, since it has been and will continue to satisfying my personal interests, which are not far out there, i think.
you gave your reasons for preferring 360, and i gave my reasons why i think it's obsolete. and i did it without sound like a douche bag. okay maybe i sounded a little mean, but you really come off as an asshole imho. i don't really care that you own and prefer a 360, but it's just funny AND SAD how flustered you seem to get knowing there are people like me who simple prefers a ps3.

finally someone that sees it like it do. most of the 360 exclusives everyone is always going on about don't interest me. i don't really play FPS's that much so Halo doesn't appeal to me. the only 360 game that interested me was Blue Dragon and it wasnt anywhere near enough to make me buy a 360.
so i have a PS3 and i couldn't be happier. i love the exclusives we have now and the ones coming up look promising. it's all personal preference, which is something that can't be classified as right or wrong.

The comment regarding owning both systems is stupid, I personally don’t agree with.
I own both systems, because I brought a 360 when the ps3 wasn’t available and enjoy the online gaming. I used it as a media hub via transcode from day one. But as soon as the sony was released, I got one to use as a media hub, through tversity. I prefer the ps3 over the 360 as a media hub, because IMO the interface is better and the FAN NOISE of the 360 spoils the experience when i am watching a movie. This seems to be the reason why alot of people have moved across. But I still use my 360 because Halo 3 is an awesome multi player game.
I own both systems, because I brought a 360 when the ps3 wasn’t available and enjoy the online gaming. I used it as a media hub via transcode from day one. So the Sony PlayStation 3 now support Divx right. I can make and watch divx movies on the PS3. That sound totally rad. Does it matter with version ps3 you buy. Do all the PS3 that you can buy today support Divx. Overall honest opinion which system PS3 or 360, which one has the better looking games.
