What's this "studies have shown" stuff? Is this a commercial for drug perscriptions? Heh, either way, you can bicker between MP3 and AAC all you want, they're both lossy, they both should not be the source material for your home theatre system, kay? It's a minor change in a feature that I can't imagine many even care about. If you're using a console picture show app as your primary audio playback component in your home theatre system, you obviously don't care about audio quality anyways, so what gives? Just re-rip beethoven's 9th into AAC and you're good to go.

The way I see it... I could give a shit about not having MP3 playback anymore. The amount of times I've used the photochannel's ridiculous MP3 playback totals at... zero.

I've used the photochannel for one thing so far.

A group of friends and I connected with the Wii like to send eachother the occasional photo doctored with the Wii Photochannel's crazed image editing nonsense. Its just something we do because its funny and one of us started doing it. Moderately humorous, fun stuff. I've had plenty of fun creating freakish scenes using it.

Honestly though, I could give an equal shit about the good news here. If anything, I want more drawing tools in the photochannel, not some fancy icon.

I use it for powerpoint presentations. It impresses the teachers.

Who makes a product worse? Wow. Are we sure they didn't just add AAC support?

I don't yet have a Wii, but I know I won't utilize this feature when I pick one up. My digicam already does such a good job with slideshows, and the pictures/music are already on it! I see no need to add a step.

This is so preposterous. Why didn't Nintendo just added the AAC compatibility without killing MP3? I feel so aggravated now, I use this functionality all the time with Excte Truck (very underrated game). Oh and yes, I am one of those (admittedly few) people who wanted a Wii with MP3 and DVD playback straight from the box for the sake of convenience.

Will this interfere with people's ability to play custom soundtracks in games, a la Excite Truck? If so... bad move.

No, wait. It's just a bad move. I don't think the Wii's firmware chip is too small to support both codecs. Can people expect even more format crackdown in the future on an already frugal feature set?

Having re-encoded my whole CD library to AAC years ago I now feel vindicated. Anyone still using MP3 is living in the past. AAC files sound better than MP3 at only half the bit rate. I just hope that Wii games will support the format too.
