2K Games: No Bioshock on PS3; stop asking

Clearly Bioshock publisher 2K Games is sick of people asking about a potential PS3 port of the title. Despite rumors suggesting the story-driven FPS might be coming to Sony's side of the fence, 2K Games representatives are adamantly insisting that no such port is in development, now or ever.

We get that they're trying to be clear, but 2K comes off sounding a bit like our dads. Their official statement on the 2K Games forums was: "There will be no PS3 version of BioShock. It has been explained time and time again." A bit harsh, no?

Still, the point has been made. Those looking to get their Little Sister fix will have to turn to the PC or Xbox 360 versions.

I finally caved and decided to purchase the game (on 360) last night, even though I already played through and beat it once. $49.99 for this AND The Darkness.

The only reason I didnt get it is because I've heard that as soon as you play through the game once, you're sort of....done with it. Is this true, do you feel this way while playing it?

Yeah Jtenma, that's pretty much how I felt after I finish the game. I mean, I could play through it again I guess, I just have no real desire to do so. It's too much time and effort for a different 3 minute ending.

I'm inclined to agree Jtenma. I've decided to keep the game, however, instead of selling it the moment it's beat like most other games. It was an enjoyable enough experience that I'll likely go back and replay it in a year or two.

Its not a big deal personally. Also that "piece of code" was from a preference file in the PC version of BioShock (which is the version I own, I have a 360 but would rather have it on PC), but it's more than likely just a general file for the Unreal 3 engine itself.

the lack of AAA titles on the PS3 will only hasten its demise. And honestly, the PS3 has been one of the biggest cock-ups in recent console history. So yeah, I'm advocating its failure because of idiot business decisions and overly ambitious goals that have plagued the PS3 since day one. The 360 is the superior "next-gen" console.

I don't even care whether one console "wins' or not, but the sheer lack of your (Martin's) kind of thinking during the PS2 era and prior to the PS3 release has left me undeniably bitter about all this talk of unity and moderation and success for all three consoles. The PS3 tolerant, while it's constantly being outsold by two consoles which released with considerably weaker brand names in this market is annoying. It seems to draw from a hate counter-culture in that so many people hate the PS3 that it's cool to like it again, even though haters are outnumbered these days. It just seems that regardless of Wii and Xbox 360 successes and failures, there has always been a large following for the Playstation who've just been waiting for the message boards to turn to their favour again.

PS3 has a higher attach rate than Wii. And in timelife, PS3's attach rate is only .42 lower than 360's at this point in the systems life. Poor dev tools is debatable depending upon who you ask.

And so I attacked both fronts pointing out PS3 has a better attach rate than Wii and only slightly behind 360's this time in 360's lifecycle. What does this mean for the morons? The attach rate is not a problem since people who BUY a PS3 are BUYING games. This goes directly against the belief that BluRay is somehow the only reasn why people buy this system.

Did I say install base is fucking awesome or the lack thereof is troublesome? No, actually. BECAUSE HE DIDN'T MENTION IT. That simple. Clear cut and dry. He attacked attach rate, I defended attach rate.

Now if we're going to get into what attach rate matters more on which system, we could always compared first vs. third party sales. Especially in the Wii market but that's a derailing tactic. Superior attach rates (THE ACTAUL NUMBER) potentially mean two things...either your console sells more games (GOOD), or your console doesn't sell very well(BAD). Not arguing that the attach rate is statistically higher on the PS3, but...it's a false positive. The PS3 does NOT have a BETTER attach rate because the number is entirely reliant on the fact that the damn console isn't selling. This is called analysis.

Further, since this really is about the 360...consider that the the 360 sold roughly 10M units in its first year compared to the 5-6M the PS3 will have sold.

Neither is mutually exclusive, thus my freaking point. The fact that you chose to defend the attach rate of the PS3 as being a positive shows that you had zero interest in investigating the reasons behind it's superiority. Ie..extremely poor console sales and so-so software sales. Again, yeah, the number is better for the PS3, but the reason it being better is really, really bad. But, whatever, take it for what it is.

Ill make it real simple
If there was only 5 ps3 sold, and 10 wiis sold, and all those console owners only bought one game, the attach rate would be the same. Yes the wii has the potential to have a higher attach rate since it sold more but it doesn't.
The people that have the ps3 are buying more games for it than wii owners.

I think they explained the code thing a while back. Early in development it could have been multi platform or the development system they use is multiplatform and contains placeholders, but that doesn't mean a game is multiplatform.

I totally appreciate 2K being straightforward on this.

Some other comapanies are a bit more vague when answering the same question, with the ".... is not planned on the ... at THIS time"

I'd much rather have harsh then the false hope that something is coming.

Way to lash out RC. Sony folks have been commenting over and over that they want or expect a PS3 version of this game - and it was never true that one was being made. It seems to me that people could argue that Sony fanboys are then the dumbest people around for continuously telling themselves lies about this game. (I have seen how much it sucks, that it doesn’t look that good, that it would be better on bluray, and of course – that its gonna go to the ps3. All b.s.)

On point, it doesn't seem harsh to me how 2k asserted their point. They have a game with exclusive rights on the 360, which in turn is designed to help sell consoles. For it to do that they need to make it clear that it won’t be available to the PS3.

It generally doesn't go the other way around because the cost of porting outweighs the potential sales on a platform with a smaller install base.

Porting to wii makes more sense, because you're doubling you potential customers. Porting to PS3 only increases your potential customers by half.

So if you sold 1 million units to an install base of 10 million, you'd potentially only get a maximum of 500,000 additional sales to an install base of 5 million.

Depending on the expense of porting, this may or may not be worth while, because those sales are not guaranteed.

If this game ever comes, by the time it comes, it's relevance would be greatly diminished. I mean, even if it does come, who cares anymore? The porting effort will be massive whereas a simultaneous development only costs an addition 10% according to Ubisoft. To make PS3 ports fiscally viable, it has to be planned initially. So even if they attempt this, the sales wouldn't support the effort and we'll be left with yet another developer making bad decisions and planning PS3 for that.

i never said anything about porting it to the wii. but the wii attach rate is almost as bad, if you remember the stats, they were within like .2 of each other. ps2 is by far the worst, haha they have like 120 million consoles sold and the 360 sells 8x more / and wii version with like 2x more of guitar hero 3 than the ps2 and ps3 versions. what im saying is the playstation 3 is just a lose lose situation for developers. i think the wii will start to pick up in software sales now that some decent party games are actually out for it. pc + xbox 360 + wii are the profit zones, each with a different niche fanbases. what u think?
