Fallout sale to help fund Earthworm Jim, Descent comebacks
With help from money it gleaned from selling the Fallout franchise to Bethesda, Interplay intends to revitalize its in-house game development studio and "has hired a veteran game developer," according to an SEC filing. Interplay also noted that, should it be able to obtain further financing, the developer intends to "develop sequels to some of the most successful games, including Earthworm Jim, Dark Alliance, Descent and MDK." The developer also plans to continue work on a Fallout MMO.The connection to Interplay's former post-apocalyptic franchise doesn't end there; it's as interwoven into this story as the characters from LOST are to each other. The "veteran game developer," as it turns out, is former Fallout designer Jason Anderson, who worked on the first and second games before leaving with fellow Fallout devs Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky to form Troika games. Anderson is reportedly working on an MMO for Interplay unrelated to Fallout.

No U,Descent was awesome.
Kael @ Nov 14th 2007 4:09PM
Yes, bring back Descent!
Freeze @ Nov 14th 2007 3:32PM
Bring back MDK! The music from the first game was fantastic! Which made the enjoyment of playing that game much more fun. The sequel was ok except I didnt really like playing as the Doctor or the Dog, Max.
Chris @ Nov 14th 2007 3:34PM
If buying Fallout brings back Earthworm Jim and MDK then they have +1 sales.
Tricky bastards.
WiNG @ Nov 14th 2007 3:34PM
HAGGIS? What's HAGGIS?
Chris @ Nov 14th 2007 3:47PM
LOL
Okay I'm going to Amazon to see if they have the show on DVD now. Thanks!

It's only the heart, lungs, and liver of a sheep boiled in its own intestines. DUH.
Frank @ Nov 14th 2007 3:37PM
Earthworm Jim was sick on Sega
NaeemTHM @ Nov 14th 2007 3:56PM
Possible Earthworm Jim revival? I'm purchasing 3 copies of Fallout now.

A possible new Earthworm Jim? YAY!
samfish @ Nov 14th 2007 4:36PM
AND a Ghostbusters game for the Wii announced today, too? Does God not hate me anymore?
No no...this must be Heaven. I must be dead!
Pimliconite @ Nov 14th 2007 4:47PM
Heaven is a warm, juicy Peach and the game is hide the salam.
JustinG @ Nov 14th 2007 3:45PM
Stealing this new found idea, Atari need only use its 10 million new found investor dollars towards a sequal to "Combat". In other news, Nintendo has decided to port Mario Bros. to its only un-tapped market, the 4 slot toaster. Many have derided this idea, claiming this 4 slot toaster is in fact two 2-slot toasters ducttaped together.
David @ Nov 14th 2007 3:46PM
Awesome awesome awesome! Those are all great franchises!
capt_carl @ Nov 14th 2007 3:48PM
Tidbit: Red Faction began development as Descent 4, but due to poor sales of Descent 3, the project was canned. A new Descent game would make me bust out my old school Sidewinder 3D Pro joystick. /nostalgia Descent was developed by Parallax Software though, which became Volition and I forget the other Outrage. I think Volition still owns the IP, unless the brand went bankrupt, I really don't remember.
On Earthworm Jim, XBLA please for both EWJ1 and EWJ2. I should break out the Sega Genesis to play both.
shamowfski @ Nov 14th 2007 3:54PM
A more likely avenue for distribution would be the virtual console.
FidliousWong @ Nov 14th 2007 3:56PM
I know seven people at Volition. Each and every one of them get an instant scowl the moment you mention Freespace and the potential for a sequel. Not sure what's holding them back (could be they don't have the rights, could be it's just not that interesting of a project), but I know everyone who works there is tired of all the constant demands and bitching from people eager for a sequel.
Considering Interplay will be resurrecting this and not THQ, that's likely a giveaway on who has the rights.

I just ordered 9999999999999999999999999999999999999.2 copies. Looks like we are getting some Earth Worm Jim.
Geoffrey Sperl @ Nov 14th 2007 4:13PM
MMO unrelated to Fallout?
An Earthworm Jim MMO, perhaps?!?
Okay, that won't happen... but one can wish.
Almost any new Earthworm Jim would be a good thing. :)
glassd @ Nov 14th 2007 4:20PM
Awesome! now where's my Freespace 3?
Undead Priest @ Nov 14th 2007 4:26PM
Would the booger and fart jokes of Earthworm Jim hold up today?
samfish @ Nov 14th 2007 4:31PM
What kind of question is that?
Booger and fart jokes NEVER go out of style!
Your Ad here 555-1923 @ Nov 14th 2007 4:56PM
Of course booger and fart jokes still hold, just look at Robot chicken and Family guy.
LaughingTarget @ Nov 14th 2007 4:43PM
EWJ needs to stay dead along with the other failed mascots of the 90s like Bubsy or Aero the Acrobat.
We do need a Freespace 3 though. Descent ... eh, I could get into that, too, but would prefer Freespace.
user_21937 @ Nov 14th 2007 4:47PM
Interplay is the same company that said buying Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel for the consoles would fund the development of Fallout 3. Always remember that.
Snailking @ Nov 14th 2007 4:56PM
GROOVY!
I know I wasn't the first one to say it, but I'm glad I'm not the only person who played EWJ to death!

from the soil he did crawl
ZippyDSMlee @ Nov 14th 2007 5:16PM
...read between the liens boys/girls unless in the contract they get a cut of FO3 sells, they have already got moeny off this and wont get more so buying more copies wont help them in this, and if this is as good as their other "projects" I'll pass.
Kamall @ Nov 14th 2007 5:20PM
I just wanted the original guys to work on Fallout 3, bring back the spirit of 1 and 2. Don't screw up 3 please!
Dale @ Nov 14th 2007 5:27PM
So long as the EWJ game is better than EWJ 3D...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earthworm_Jim_3D
... I am happy.
WhatIsThatThing @ Nov 14th 2007 5:54PM
Earthworm Jim and MDK sequels? Me wanty!
Martez @ Nov 14th 2007 6:09PM
Descent 4 or Freespace 3 on Wii, plz.
WedgeTalon @ Nov 14th 2007 9:40PM
"or"?
I believe the word you were looking for was "and".
mattydread @ Nov 14th 2007 6:10PM
Earthworm Jim was quite possibly my favorite SNES game. Actually... yes, I'm comfortable saying that it was. So WOOOHOOO!
Descent 2 was one of my favorite games of all time. I had it for the 3DO (don't laugh) and I've missed it for a very very long time.
This is some of the best Joystiq news I've read in a long time.
Joe @ Nov 15th 2007 1:12AM
I can't wait to save the Pricess whats her name again. That will be good times good times. Also Descent and MDK
As for Balders Gate:Dark Alliance I thought Bioware owned that game. I guess not so more games is always good. I can't wait to play these games again. I just hope this is not a joke because last time there was to be a new Earth Worm Jim on the PSP then it got canceled.
So I hope the same will not happen to these games too.
Martez @ Nov 15th 2007 4:20AM
Touche.
Matt Sulivan @ Nov 15th 2007 10:02AM
Honest-to-God, MDK2 alone is reason enough for you to go out and buy a Dreamcast today and play it.
I would spend a night with a lonely trucker to get my hands on a copy of MDK3, dignity be damned!
exile142000 @ Nov 15th 2007 12:00PM
I will only play the earthworm jim game if the developers follow a few simple rules
1.ABSOLOUTLEY NO Boss batles that involve surfing on pigs (please return the creativity to that of the original)
2. Cows may no longer active characters, only a running joke
3. He must not be stuck in anyones head and no mention of Earthworm Kim.
4.CAN NOT BE A PLATFORMER
