id Software and Fountainhead create id Mobile
It was announced today that id, the company that invented the graphics-card pushing first-person shooter genre, has made the leap onto smaller screens with a new division simply called id Mobile, created in conjunction with Fountainhead Entertainment. The studio will be focused on games for cell phones, DS and PSP, with a few titles (like a mobile Wolfenstein) already in the works.id and Fountainhead have been headed this way for a while, after Doom RPG and the Orcs and Elves games. As you've probably seen, most mobile games are pretty awful (something even id's John Carmack admitted to in this interview about the new division), but if anyone can turn that around, we have faith that Carmack's the guy. (Especially since the rocket thing didn't pan out.)

Fountainhead.. that's a good book. And id did not create the FPS.

The Fountainhead was awful. I read about 200 pages in then threw it across the room.
The entire book is literary masturbation. "Hey I'm Ayn Rand and my philosophy is pure genius. Sure my protagonist is a complete self-absorbed asshole, but he's actually the pinnacle of mankind. Oh and you are too stupid to understand the trite themes of my novel, so let me just give every character 3-page long monologues"
Goddamn that book sucked.

Re: Wing.
Amen. Ayn Rand in general is annoyingly obnoxious and pretentious. Which is why I thought bioshock was awesome.

He should have used the id Tech 5 to simulate the rocket launch... poor Carmack.

Not in Japan.

Screw Japan, the best mobile game on Earth is stateside, "Tornado Mania"

This game IS AWESOME. I got it since it was the only mobile game with a 10 from IGN. It is like mixing SimCity and Katamari Damacy... you use the tornado to suck up and destroy cities, then use the pieces to construct your own, better city. It is made of absolute win.

I hope the word mobile refers specifically to mobile phones, and not handhelds/portables. I like the games on my DS and PSP very much, thank you... sometimes more than on my 360 or Wii.

I definetly wouldn't say most. There are a number of excellent games out there. Sure devs like to shovel out a lot of crap and there are a ton of cash-ins but you've gotta do your research and play the right games. Doom RPG is a perfect example of a high-quality mobile title.

I quite liked doom RPG, so hopefully this will pan out. I'd like to see a doom RPG on DS.
