Sony's CEO Howard Stringer is giving a little tease about Sony's current PS3 sales numbers before NPD lays down the law later today with the October data. Stringer says that in the two weeks prior to Nov. 11, they sold 100,000 units per week. However, the NPD group will only reflect data for the month of October, which saw the PS3 selling between 30K and 40K per week, according to Stringer. Sales only expectedly jumped after the introduction of the 40GB model on Nov. 2.
Stringer admits to all the difficulties the PS3 has found in the last year, telling the Associate Press, "Obviously, we've taken so much heat over the year on PS3 ... Finally, the turning point has been passed." Although it's probably still too early to say that, at least Sony seems to be on the right path -- good thing everyone's sales go up during the holidays.

Shag, give me some anti-VGChartz sauce, or do you just have a gut feeling that they make numbers up?

Here's their own explanation of how they do what they do. The site is quickly growing, getting more advertising, and getting more accurate. Developers and publishers will be paying close attention as it slowly conquers NPD.

The last thing said in the article:
[He added that the Wii's shortage problems might even help the PS3 this holiday season. "It's a little fortuitous that the Wii is running out of hardware," he said.]
That really shouldn't have been included. It makes it sound like the PS3 isn't a person's first choice, but they will settle for it if they can't get a Wii. That just seems like a foolish thing to say.
That being said, I think all three companies will be fine this holiday season.

Eh, more like folks who intend to buy a Wii and PS3 (instead of Wii and 360) who can't find the Wii, will grab the PS3 first instead of the Wii first.

It's not a wise choice, but it's true. Alot of little ones will be forced to settle for a 360 or PS3 this christmas season.

I don't hate the PS3,I feel its over pricedfor the games it currently has and will get in eh next 15 months, and the back tracking on BWC to cut cost is a insult to the brand, because of these issues I wont pay more than 350 for any PS3 that still has some form of BWC.
I can say the same thing about the 360 the HDD issues are a joke they now sell 3GB+ Xbox games add on the films and TV eps it a a fcking joke, now add ahrdware issues and the comming game size issues the 360 is not worth more than 300 with a HDD....
the WII could be 50$ less and offer more custom control choices to make thos 10+ N64 games come alive(until they let me made and use the wii mote and NC I wont be buying in anytime soon).

I call bullshit. What is this guy basing these claims off of? Shipped units? There's no way that he is getting THAT much real time data from retailers. That's what the NPD does, not Sony. All Sony can track is what they have shipped, and here's the shocker...
If you release a NEW model of a console, every retailer is going to order some because they don't have any. Duh. So of course you'll see a spike in shipped units. The real question is whether or not they are leaving shelves once they reach stores. At the store I work at, they sure aren't. We even have a giant banner in the window that says "PS3 NOW $399.99".

Anyone think it’s good when a company has to drastically drop its price to get someone to buy its’ product? What is that saying about it? I remember hearing that Sony lost 200 dollars per system when it was released. Now it’s even cheaper. How’s a company going to survive with that kind of loss?
Wow! Sales are higher than the other system ~maybe because most people already own them????

The 40GB PS3 doesn't cost as much to make as the old PS3s. The cost of producing Xbox 360's dropped 38% in one year, so it's likely the 40GB PS3's cost is several hundred dollars less than the old PS3s.

All the people criticizing Sony are stupid.
The PS3 will easily outsell the Xbox 360.
Xbox 360's 1st year: 6 million.
Xbox 360's 2nd year: 7 million (17% growth).
Wii's 1st year: 13 million.
PS3's 1st year 5.75 million.
The PS3's second year of sales at $399 will likely be much higher than the Xbox 360's second year (at least 10-15 million). Also, the PS3 will drop to $299 by late 2008 (possibly mid 2008). That means it's on track to surpassing the Xbox 360 by early 2009.
The PS3 will win because has a broader appeal than the Xbox 360. The Xbox 360's lack of Japanese and casual games is a major problem and it's focus on PC style games and it's subscription based online service are for hardcore gamers only.

Selling systems will not make it successful. Consumers need to buy the games. I've only played 1 game on my PS3 so far (RFOM). I only use it because I like watching Blu-rays and viewing pix from my sony camera. Other than that the wii and 360 have kept me busy with fantastic games. I think people will be buying the PS3 for Blu-ray and not so much for games. Think about it. Is the PS3 really appealing for gamers RIGHT NOW?
COD4 X360 = 507K sold USA

LOL give me a break! Hey Sony you MOST think we are STUPID! Guess what Sony? Microsoft Sales during November will not be reflected in the OCTOBER NPD data either. Niether will Nintendo's Guess what? THey are not suppose to, These are OCTOBER numbers not November numbers HELLO. We dont see Microsoft saying the new sales of hardware in November boosted by the new great games are not reflected in Octobers numbers LMOA! But some people dont see the play on words they ARE easier to fool than some of us. But come on! You got to know people look at what comes from your camp with a critical eye now yeah!?

To Ska Oreo,
Just wanted to say that original game experiences doesn't necessarily make a console. Xbox makes the bulk of its money from (with after effects due to) big a fairly generic FPS.
The Wii makes its money from games that have as much depth as cellphone games, except you waggle at the Wii, and you don't waggle your cellphone. Unless you want to :P. The Wii's actual games (Zelda, Metroid, Fire Emblem) aren't even mentioned in "the Wii is awesome" conversation. It's still Wii Sports.
And if we're going for originality? The PS3 has a game that summons creatures from cards, and the PS2 Eye Toy has always been more impressive than the Wiimote.
I have and support all the systems, by the way.

Also forgot to mention Harmonix games.
FreQuency/Amplitude were pretty original for their time and failed miserably, and a guitar controller with fret buttons that you press while actually strumming is already more complicated and in depth than any Nintendo game. And in a week, Rock Band!
Suppose I'm just let down by Nintendo and its Wii. Maybe when they make the next Zelda a bunch of mini-games instead of a real game, the rest of the world will understand my pain :P.

I predicted that the ps3 was eventually going to take the lead back in Nov 2006. I knew it wasn't going to be quick more like 2-3 years after launch.
I still believe that today. Actually, I'm even more convinced. You may laugh now but you xbox and nintendo fanboys will eventually own a ps3.

With the PS3 being 399 it can push more units and there are just enough games in waiting to push more units..but I doubt they will hit the 10milloin sold mark before summer.

For the most part yes, the PS3 is overpriced as a game machine they should scrap the worthless 40GB unit and sell the 80GB unit for 450 and be done with price fixing and new units for a year or 2.
the 360 is somewhere between broken and oversold, the locked HDD makes the new downloadable Hdef content and Xbox games moot at best, to "enjoy" live you have to pay 50 a year the arcade bundle 360 is a joke with only a tiny mem card.
They are price rigging and profftering off their crap, if it was a normal profiting I wouldn't mind it so but they are nickeling and dimming you for every cent they can get.
Sony would wind up in a better position if they would sell the real PS3 for 350-450 and drop the rest, MS still has hardware issues and live is 50 a year, its time they drop the 20GB HDDs and replace the with the 120GB HDDs,they both are doing things sloppily and wasting more money than they are saving it, its normal blind suit operations like these that think putting millions into DRM will somehow stop or slow piracy.

Turns out Sony's claim was actually in reference to both PS2 and PS3 sales together. PS3 sales never rose above 75,000 per week for the month in question.
So not only did they have to do damage control before the NPD results hit -- they had to use some serious smoke and mirrors in doing so.

"I agree with you somewhat, but it can't just only be good games. It has to be games that are unique and can only be found on the ps3. I'm not talking about making some generic FPS, slap it with a new name, and put on the box only for ps3 (*cough Killzone 2 cough*) I'm talking about something that could represent the console as a whole, like what Halo did for the xbox and SMG is doing for the Wii, the ps3 needs that type of game. If sony really wants us gamers to care about Blu-ray they need to get a developer that truly takes advantage of the technology, not just uping the graphics and adding more levels."
Sorry, But I am going to have to disagree for one reason.. the ps2..The ps2 became a huge success not based on one or two games that "defined" the system, but on a wide range of games that appealed to everyone so that the "defining" game was differnt for each person.....yeah for a xbox fanboy they would say Halo, for Nintendo, Mario.....but a playstation fanboy might be Final Fantasy, or Metal Gear, or Hell for me personally it Be God Of War
So yes to be a success, you could release a game that only attracted a certain audience and "define" that system....but to be a bigger success you have to release games that appeal to all audiences to have a much larger "definition" for that system

I also still find it funny, watching half of these comments still trying to bash sony....hell even on post lined of both the ps3 and 360 games telling me that the ps3 still sucks....which is weird because from what I can tell the ps3 is still in third place.....the fact people still need to come into this thread giving me more evidence is just sad....as if I can't tell just by looking at the numbers that the ps3 still have a long way to go
I am not to sure whats more pathetic, sony fanboys who would fallow sony to the grave or the non sony fanboys who claim they have no interest in the ps3, yet spend all their time researching it just to find new ways to bash it
seriously, I can't go into a R&C thread without half the wiitards telling me how much SMG is going to pwn R&C
AHH JEZZ I just used the term wii tards, guess mu comment is going to get blurred out

it sold 100,000 PS3s in a single week. They made no such claim.
Go back to the original Associated Press story. The quote follows:
--------
"In the two weeks ending Nov. 11, Sony said it sold more than 100,000 consoles of all types."
http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/content_display/home_entertainment/games/e3i025192b39d66ffb52b8fafd26cefdc8e
--------
Sony has recently clarified that statement to say that they included Playstation 2 sales in with that number.
---------
"The price cut and new model helped Sony increase sales of all consoles including the older PlayStation 2 to 100,000 units in the week ended Nov. 11, spokeswoman Kimberly Otzman said in an e-mail."
http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=newsarchive&sid=aUlmjLlsp37s
---------
The wording is understandably vague, but if you read the source you'll see it as Sony's response to Patcher, who says there's no way in hell they sold 100k PS3s. Sony acknowledges that.
Good job with the journalism yet again, Joystiq. Feel free to actually read the original source once in a while and maybe you'll actually report the story accurately.
