@Mr.Khan

I was going to mention the lack of an awesome overworld to explore (Like the Isle of Delfino in Sunshine, or the Mushroom Kingdom in Mario 64) but I figured people would bitch and claim that the amazing quantity of original "Galaxies" to explore made up for it.

I was also going to mention how Mario had less moves, and how the amount of ways you could defeat bad guys were very limited (Jump on their heads, or spin attack, or..shooting star bits at them and then running into them) but then I thought about how 64 didn't have any other ways really, so I didn't. I think in order to make the gravity work, they severely limited how high you can jump as mario (without the spring upgrade) and they made it nearly impossible to do a triple jump (you don't even need to at any point during the game =/).

Having said all of that, this game kills Sunshine (with one exception being the roller coaster fight with Mecha Bowser in Sunshine...that was a stroke of genius, and no one moment in Galaxy really tops it, IMO)

I can't help but lament the death of the cannon in Mario games. Oh sure, Galaxy has cannons, but there isn't any freedom as far as where you can shoot them is concerned. I guess the same could be said for flying *Possible spoiler here I guess* since you get to fly later in the game...but there is nowhere to go, so why bother =/. My two favorite elements from Mario 64 were the cannons (Which kept me playing M64 for YEARS after I got to 120 stars. So much fun to shoot Mario all over a map) and the flying. Unfortunately Galaxy killed both of them.

Again, I loved the game, and at 60 stars I'm by no means finished with it, but I guess it goes towards proving that no game is going to stand up next to games with a boatload of nostalgia factor (SMB3, Link to the Past, Ocarina of Time, Mario 64 etc) and that it's really by no fault of the developers. The Camera being ass IS their fault however =P

I hated the actual Mecha Bowser boss battle. It was piss annoying to aim, had no control over motion. But the build up was good with that cut scene and all.

They whored it out on the trailers a little bit, but Megalegs was just genius on disc.

I own the game, I've played the game, and it does not deserve such an honour. Really, I don't even see it as game of the year, though I'm sure some places will give it to SMG.

To put Galaxy up with games like Chrono Trigger, Half-Life 2, OoT, Metal Gear Solid, Metroid Prime, Resident Evil 4, and Super Mario 64... I just don't see it happening.

Don't get me wrong, its an amazing game. Just not THAT great.

On a side note, I don't find Gamerankings to be that reliable anyway. Gamestats (which still places SMG at 7th all time) seems to have more consistently accurate numbers.

The game is good no doubt, but I feel like it gets higher marks because it's Mario and the first real Mario game on the Wii. The first highly anticipated game on the Wii (way more than Zelda). It's not shovel ware or mini games so people might rate it so much higher and cream their pants over it. People want a A+ title so bad that when they get an A, they have to push it and push it higher, saying it's perfect. The first 25 minutes of going through text and story is painfully long.

It's a must own for a Mario fan or someone who wants a real game on the Wii. A ton of people with different tastes can have fun with it. Hopefully Nintendo will stop whoring out Mario and focus on making a great title every 14 months like this one.

Just looking at that page on Gamerankings, Nintendo owns the top 3 games ever. And 5 in the top 10. Not a Playstation 2+ game in the top 10, which is about right. I adored my PS1 but nothing ever shone bright on the PS2 and nothing on the PS3 yet.

I could never argue with that top 10 list.

#1 - I'm no Ninty fanboy.

#2 - I said your post was dumb because you said that the pic was from Smash Bros. when that was obvious TO EVERYONE and was there to signify Mario's beating Zelda as the highest rated game of all time, not to mention the fact that it sounded like you were judging a game you've likely never played before.

#3 - I'm not judging the game off it being a Mario game, you fuckwit - I never even allured to that. The level design, the gameplay, the music, all top notch. Even moreso than Zelda, in my opinion. It has NOTHING to do with it being a Mario game - in fact, before this game, my favorite platformer game to have come come out in the last few years wasn't a Mario game, but Ratchet and Clank - Up your Arsenal. No, its people like YOU who are killing the gaming world - people who aren't willing to give a game a chance because of blind stupidity.

#4 - In your post, you have only proven even further how fucking stupid you are.

While Gamerankings has it beating Ocarina, Zelda is still on top at Metacritic. Though Mario has more reviews, which obviously could affect it's standing.

That's the only thing I could potentially see bringing Mario down. Back when OOT was released, there weren't nearly as many "review" sites out there. Looking at the numbers, most games now get close to 100 reviews if they're a big name title, maybe a little less. OOT got somewhere around 30 or 40. All Mario needs is a few scores that aren't 100 to dilute the overall enough to bring it below Zelda.

Which begs the question if games this far apart in releases should even be compared by review merit alone. Would OOT get the same score if it had more reviews? I'm pretty sure both have approximately the same amount of perfect scores and both have a lowest score around the 80 mark. It's just that Mario has more reviews, and more are less than a 100.

Yeah, now that you mention it, some places that really shouldn't be counted (You know who you are...) are being counted as 100/100's the same way that respectable places are being counted.

Also, looking at that list, the freaking orange box is 2 of the top 10 and Soul Caliber for the dreamcast is on there too (come on now...really?). It should also be noted that Half-Life 2 is number 10, so really HL2 is 3 out of 10 spots, which is pretty ridiculous.

This is a non story when you look at the places they are counting, and at the much smaller (as noted by someone above) amount of places ranking the older N64 games.

It is one of the only games ever to get perfect scores from both IGN and Famitsu.

Plus, it's a masterpiece.

You know, you guys can argue over OOT or SMG until the cows come home, but by November 30th, M&M's Kart Racing will outclass every single game out there.

Gamerankings average review for the game will be over 9000%.

Virtual Console games will be ignored (even when Earthbound is released), no miis will be checked out, nobody will vote in everybody votes.

Don't even get me started on the fates of the other consoles.

Joystiq wouldn't even bother reporting on OTHER games and they'll be converted to a blog dedicated to M&M's Kart Racing.

Everyone will be playing M&M's Kart Racing, everyone. At least.....until M&M's Kart Racing 2: Electic Boogaloo gets released....

that list is garbage. Those top 10 games are not worthy of their sports. Orange box? Come on. Zelda should be in first, get mario out of there, it does not belong. And how is halo 1 for xbox in there? Wtf? go play halo 1 pc, with the 6 outdoor maps and great online play. halo 1 xbox was garbage compared to that. And even then, goldeneye 007 should be higher up on the list, and wheres halo 3?

And IMO - 3-D platformers peaked with Rayman 2. In my eyes, that's the platformer to beat - not Mario 64.

SMG is a great game and something all of us Wii-owners have been waiting for, but I can't accept it permanently replacing OoT as #1. Halo 3 also went up to #1 but it fell (thank God). If SMG stays where it is, I will be upset. It should be high up, higher than Halo, but I'll be damned if it is the one game to finally top OoT. I feel like something better be 100% Grade A badass before it tops OoT as Greatest Game of All Time. Just sayin'.

Nobody expects a story from a Mario game as long as it's goddamn fun.

The graphics are absolutely perfect for what it set out to achieve. There's no reason whatsoever that Galaxy would attempt to look like FFXIII or even want to.

I cannot see how this game recieved the highest rating ever. Game reviewers must be smoking crack these days. (How else would Assassin's Creed ever get more than a 4 or 5?) The game is ok, but great, or even greatest game ever? HELL NO. It's the same thing as Mario 64 or Sunshine, with slight graphic and gameplay improvements, and a gimmicky control scheme thrown in. Why in the hell people are quick to defend it, is beyond me. I'm not a "fanboy" of other consoles. I'm not taking sides. I'm just tired of Nintendo always getting recognition and awards for doing nothing more that remaking and rehasing the same shit over and over.

The Wii has done nothing for me since I bought it and beat Zelda. They have brought virtually NOTHING to the console that has impressed me. (Zelda does not count, it was a port of a Gamecube game, nothing more)

I feel cheated by a retarded console that is only doing well because of overhype, artificial shortage, and stupid casual gamers who jerk off to mini-games. Mario has been whored even more than any Disney franchise. I can understand a platform revision ever other year , but all of the other shit games? (Mario Party, Strikers, etc?)

I hate Nintendo fanboys that are so quick to jump and defend their precious console with lines like "It's not the graphics, it's the gameplay." or "The controls are revolutionary" The Wii is a fad. It'll become uber-gay in about a year. You watch and see. I predict isolated store shelves and 3rd party support to drop just like it did with the Gamecube.

When Nintendo makes a Mario game, it's whoring out the same old shit. When Nintendo makes new franchises (that sell by the dozen million) like Nintendogs or Brain Age or Wii Sports, it's "just a fad" or "not hardcore."

You can't have it both ways guy.

haha, there's so many flaws in this post I can't even begin to attack them all. It's funny that you mention "artifical shortage"-Nintendo might not be releasing as many Wiis as they are able into stores, but with what they are releasing they are outselling the precious PS3 by over 2 to 1 since launch (in fact, last month wii outsold PS3 by nearly 5 to 1!). Is it a "fad" simply because it's selling well? Nintendo has been dragged through the mud with the past two generations of its consoles, so it's about time they get some recognition for the quality titles they are capable of producing. SMG is one of these titles, and I would like to ask you if you've even played the game. Judging by your comments, it doesn't seem as though you have, but I could be wrong.

You attack the Wii saying it has no impressive software. Metroid Prime 3 was an incredible experience for me, and controlled beautifully (non gimmick controls I might add). I haven't even played Fire Emblem, MOH Heroes 2, Trauma Center New Blood, or Zack and Wiki yet, and those all scored pretty highly with reviewers (Zack and Wiki in particular). I'll agree with you on Mario Party, but calling Strikers a "shit" game seems erroneous to me-it's fun and well made, and the Wii version has a great online mode-reviewers seem to like that game as well.

Basically, you can like or dislike any or all Wii games, but it seems like your personal dislike of the types of games released causes you to think it's a bad overall system. The quality of a video game console is not a function of YOUR preference in video game genres.

LOL MARIO GALAXY ISN'T EVEN IN THE SAME LEAGUE AS *insert generic new first person shooter here*

Seriously though, I'm about 40 some stars in, and SMG is already one of the best gameplay experiences I've ever had. I'm more of an RPG kind of guy too-my fondest SNES memories are in Chrono Trigger and FFVI as opposed to Mario World or Allstars (although they too have a special place in my heart).

We live in the era of the self proclaimed "hardcore gamer", where games are only considered to be good if they meet the following conditions:

1. First person shooter
2. On Xbox360 or PC
3. Rated M

Sure, Call of Duty 4 is good. I've played Gears of War as well as Resistance. I've also played Halo and Halo 2. However, these games honestly don't have much more to offer than any other quality shooter. If anyone here played the original Half Life when it came out, then they understand that THAT is a quantum leap in gaming. Halo 1, 2, or 3 is NOT that kind of a leap. In fact, it's not a leap at all. The whole "hardcore" fps genre is stagnating very quickly in terms of originality-Bioshock is the only recent one that's had anything new to offer.

Contrast with SMG, which in my opinion stands tall above not only any platformer on current systems, but most platformers ever created, in terms of level design, art direction, control, fun, and especially originality. Call of Duty 4? Yeah, the production values are probably pretty high and it probably plays well-but it's a WWII shooter folks. That genre is a dead end in terms of bringing original gameplay ideas to the table.

Let me know when you guys stop allowing your impressions of Mario 64 to be hopelessly warped by nostalgia. It's a fantastic game, sure, and more revolutionary than Galaxy pretty much by default - you can't really beat a transition from 2D to 3D in that department - but Galaxy takes every aspect of 64, plus what was great about Sunshine, and vastly improves on it. Really, you can't ask for much more.

I've been playing video games since the Atari 2600, now on to the present. I must say Super Mario Galaxy is an excellent game, Yes I'm a Nintendo fan been one since the NES days. This probably is the best mario game ever. The only flaw was the camera and it was too easy. But Super Mario Galaxy is a blast to play and yes it deserves game of the year, I've played Halo 3, Assassin's Creed, Orange Box, Mass Effect, and so on. But Galaxy is unlike any Mario game I've played yes I own every Super Mario game from NES to Wii. this is a great game and I'm a hardcore gamer I own Xbox 360 also but have to give it to Nintendo this time they made a damn near perfect mario game for the ages. I don't think it's the greatest game ever though but SMG lives up to the hype and Mario came back with a venegance. My favorite game of all time is still Zelda OOT. I'm tired of people saying wii has no games and is a fad how can it be when Wii's selling out like crazy and 360's and PS3 are available anytime.

Great games on Wii and more to come
The Legend of Zelda:Twilight Princess
Metroid Prime 3:Corruption
Super Mario Galaxy (Favorite Game on Wii right now)
Medal of Honor Heroes 2
Excite Truck
Bleach (Underrated fighting game that's actually pretty good)
Wii Sports (Highly Addictive I still play this game)
Super Paper Mario (Remind me of old school Mario)
Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition (Yes I own GC and PS2 versions but this one is the true RE4)
Resident Evil:The Umbrella Chronicles(Good on-rails shooter)

Games I plan on getting for Wii in the future
Mario Kart Wii
Super Smash Bros Brawl (main reason I bought a wii I still play Melee and own it since it came out in 2001)
No More Heroes(looks great and looks fun to play)

I like my Xbox 360 and my Wii, but my Wii is getting a lot of playing time now and so is my 360 so it's great that great games are coming out and to gamers that's all that should matter. Super Mario Galaxy hands down is the best game I've played in the year of 2007 and one of the best games I played in years keep up the good work Nintendo keep the game this great coming. The Wii to me is amazing sure it doesn't have 360 or Ps3 graphics but Nintendo was always about fun and for that I will always respect them and video games in general are about fun. Stop the fanboy madness and just play the games on each system and whatever gamers you like play them to have fun because I do on both 360 and wii, even PS3 have a few games I like someday I may buy one but I just MGS4 since I have all the others on PS1 and the 2 on PS2. Casual or Hardcore don't ya'll realize We are all gamers and that is a good thing Nintendo just reached out to a wider audience this time and I'm still play Nintendo I grew up on Nintendo no matter who wins the console wars the real winners are us.... the gamers.
