CoD4 overtakes Gears of War, Infinity Ward planning update

We like us some Call of Duty 4, and based on Major Nelson's top ten Xbox Live titles for this past week, so do a lot of other gamers. The game placed second in the rankings, right below Halo 3, and right above a certain quartet of steroid infused, uber-masculine gunhavers.

Infinity Ward isn't resting on their digital laurels, it would seem. Though the game has only been out eleven days in the states, they're already talking updates. The biggest change in their first planned update is a fix for the game's often fickle matchmaking and host selection, one of the few black marks against the title. Also, games will no longer end abruptly if the host drops out, and server performance on games with large numbers of players will supposedly improve. Additions / Features:

Added Kill cam to Airstrike bombs and Claymores.
Addition of Host Migration so if Host Leaves auto-chooses next best host.
Tweaked the following Oldschool Mode settings based on feedback:
- Added Unlimited Sprint
- Increased Magazine Size
- Added Ragdoll Cam
Addition of New "N0M4D" Control Scheme.

Optimizations / Tweaks:

Identify party by background color (in Lobby).
Optimized server selection for first match for better connections.
Improved network performance for 18 player games.
Optimized 'Chase Cam' when Spectating.
Fixed Playlist error when attempting to join from other games.
Handle Corrupt Create A Class data instead of kicking player.

Nah you're wrong, atleast that's not the case in the UK, you know where they game was developed.

I wouldn't mind some split-screen for when all my boy-friends came over for a slumber party.... hahahahaha no really all my buddies have a 360 so there is no need for them to come over to get their game on. Only time I want those fuckers in my house is.. well never really so yeah internet for the win. I hang out with my gamer budies outside the home, then we all game from the comfort of our own homes.

Give me online split screen (even just 2 players per console) and split screen system link Infinity Ward! It's outrageous that an FPS in 2007 supports split screen but no split screen system link. No LAN parties! :(

That would be great. It's not something I really ever messed with too much, but it's in Warhawk and there have been a few times we've gone online at my friend's place, four controllers, four screen-corners on his hd projector... Very playable. I'd love to see them add that to CoD4, but it just doesn't seem likely. I think I'd prefer an online co-op campaign, actually.

If neither happens though, I don't really mind... That was one of the best games I've played in a while; I just finished laboring for a few late nights to get all 1000/1000 achievement points. Nightmare. A fun nightmare though. "You're getting slower, Soap."

well i know i would love to have 2 player online split screen. since i dont really buy FPS's, it would beat the hell out of taking turns on CoD4 at my friends house.

it is a really good FPS though and i probably would buy it if i wasnt such a cheap ass.

Sounds good. Hopefully these updates and improvements will also be for the PS3 version. I think the biggest improvement for the PS3 CoD4 could be the use of the XMB from inside the game. I know it's possible. You can do it with Smackdown VS Raw 2008. Being able to check your friends list, send messages, etc. from ingame would be a vital improvement. Trying to get together with friends ingame without the use of commmunication is probably the biggest annoyance I have with CoD4.

I don't know if my expectations were to high because when I saw all those pretty 9.0 in Metacritic I thought Ass creed must be a one hell of a game but what I got was a Prince of Persia meets Hitman.. Wait let me rephrase that

A watered down Prince of Persia meets a hitman for dummies.

The stealth isn’t stealth at all like in Hitman games and the POP like sequences while cool they never get crazy cool like in Sands of time so basically is not a medieval Hitman or a Prince of Persia game and the story seems to be all f*ed up.

Not to mention that the Spanish version is incredibly broken, glitches everywhere, the voices just hurt my ears and the text was poorly translated to Spanish to the point it doesn’t make any sense.

I’m going to play it later and if it continues like that I’m going to return, I hope I can get a functional version in English with subtitles or at least trade it for Cod4.

Also If I wanted an amazing game that is also a breath of fresh air I rather play Super Mario Galaxy, Rise of a Ninja(Ok not that Amazing but at least it doesn't disappoints me) or Exit.

Perhaps the first and last time I'll agree with you. Assassin's Creed was fun, but not that great of a game. Sure it looked pretty but the dialoge was terrible and why the fuck did Alitar have such a silly out-of-place accent. Infact I think that 360 Naruto game got higher marks than AC, a sad day for gaming when an anime game beats out a Triple-A high profile title.

i'm loving assassin's creed, the only annoying part is that archers in the kingdom, on their towers, ALWAYS put out an alert if I get within 100 ft of em

I'm loving Assassin's Creed too. Alitar's out of place accent is (Spoilers....) Desmond Miles voice not Alitar's. Oh yeah I also hate those archers in kingdom.

I really enjoyed every second of CoD 4 is a really great game and I'm having a blast with the Online part.

Now I really need to get money for Uncharted I played the Demo and I liked it a lot.

this is my favorite MP shooter of the year by far. Only UT3 stands in it's way at this point.

btw, COD4 was ranked 2nd on Xfire over the weekend, next to CS which just shows it's not only kicking ass on 360, but PC as well :)

To tell the truth I'm really bored with CoD4 multiplayer. Really there isn't much to it. Because I didn't join in the game tell a week later I was getting owned because of the guns offered. It is kinda sad when people are picking you off from across the map because they have access to the better guns.

I have access to a good portion of the guns in the game, and I still use the starter M16. Those guns are not necessarily "better", just different. If you got your ass handed to you, im afraid it was lack of skills on nut the gun to blame.

I love this game, but the host quitting thing really pisses me off. Good thing that it will be fixed. Also, split-screen online would be nice. Halo has it for 4 players, so why not CoD4?

i beat normal game in 3 days, arcade mode was hella awesome. but wheres co-op so i can have my friend help me beat the game split screen.

This is how I know it isn't skill. When you die there is a little replay of how you die. All I see is a me, a little speck, trying to cross the street and the guy pulling about 4 shots to kill me. It may be lag, but I know I cant do that with the starter guns.

I rented CoD4 and loved it until the Prypiat Ferris wheel.

Stealth, stealth, snipe, stealth, snipe, shot down helicopters (awesome)...

PROTECT YOUR WOUNDED FRIEND FROM THE ENTIRE FUCKING RUSSIAN ARMY BY YOURSELF, WITH NO COVER OR CHECKPOINTS SO AFTER DYING FOR THE SIX HUNDREDTH TIME YOU WANT TO HUNT DOWN THE LEVEL DESIGNER AND SLOWLY MURDER HIS WHOLE FAMILY IN FRONT OF HIM!

I played this sequence multiple times on hardened with the same frustration. I found that if I hid in area behind the merry go round after the helos came in, my chances for survival increased to the point where if I was lucky, I was able to survive.

Am I the only person that doesn't think COD4 is that damn good? I love the campaign. It is the best fps campaign I've played since Orange box came out. But actually it is the best since the original Halo before that probably. Well Bioshock, then Gears, then...aw fuck it I'm getting off track.

It is just that the multiplayer plays generically for me. I don't know. I need some better jumping, dodging, and fancy power weapons to really have fun. I like it, I just don't prefer it over Halo or Gears yet.

How about loss of EXP for quitting when you're the host? That one would be nice too.

I don't know how many times I've been playing the game, and the host drops out because his team is losing by 20.

I absolutely love COD4, but my only complaint is that the people you play with online do not show up in the 'Players Met' section of the XMB. This means I have to write down the names of any nice people I meet online. Having them appear would be good, but having the ability to send friend invites in game and message friends using the XMB would be the best addition.

I'm not particularly bothered about split-screen multiplayer. You'd hear what sounded like someone coming round the corner, but it would be the guy sat next to you sprinting along. Playing with headphones/surround sound systems give such an advantage, especially with the dead silence perk!

You know what I would wish they would update? The ability to keep a party chat going while in game. There are times when I have 5 friends in my party and noone on our team is talking other than us. If we could just have the option to party chat while playing, then the others on our team wouldn't have to listen to us making fun of each other and our personal talk.

That goes for the xbox fall update as well, a 'conference' chat update would be great...plus it would eliminate the need for my previous wish.
